  1. There's no way the NHL expands to 40 teams anytime soon. That would be a bad business decision, even by their standards. For starters, Atlanta's already been through two NHL teams and I doubt the league's in a hurry to return there. Puerto Rico and Mexico City are definitely not getting teams. Hamilton wants a team but they would be wedged in between the Leafs and Sabres and neither team will have that. Houston has an arena perfectly suitable for the NHL, but whether the market would support an NHL team is another matter, or whether the owner of the Houston Rockets is willing to share the building with a hockey team (he isn't, see the relocated Houston Aeros of the AHL, now known as the Iowa Wild). Oakland - and by extension, the entire San Francisco Bay Area - already has a team in the San Jose Sharks. They're more or less seen as a spiritual successor of the Seals. The Sharks have fans in San Jose, San Francisco, and in Oakland. Why put another team there when the Sharks have already got that entire market behind them? Yeah, the Los Angeles metropolitan area has two teams, but it's also the second most populous area in the United States. The San Francisco area as a whole has about the third of the population of LA. And even LA is about 6 million short of New York, which is why New York can support three teams. And while the New Jersey Devils aren't technically in New York, they're within the vicinity of NYC. Or rather, they're practically next door. The only cities on that list I could see getting teams are Seattle and Quebec. At the moment, if there is another team added to the league then only one of them is getting that expansion franchise.
  2. So I've encountered a big problem with the ads on my Android phone. Posting this here today as this has happened to me one too many times. Every other time I'm on the boards, this popup appears claiming that I have "Four virus" on my "*insert phone model here*". Sometimes the phone model is accurately named as a Wileyfox Swift, other times it's a "Generic Android", and this time the name is instead a blank space. Notably, this popup only appears when I'm browsing this site, and in spite of what it's telling me I have never visited any "adult sites" on the phone. I installed adblock on the browser after the first time this happened, but that does nothing. I don't know if this is a virus so much as an intrusive popup that hijacks the browser, redirecting you to this page and pretty much locking up the browser and making it useless, even when you close the app and reopen it. For anyone else who has this problem, the only way to get rid of it is to clear your browser data and cache. You'll lose all of your browsing history which is inconvenient, but at least you'll be able to use it again. Also, FWIW I have never touched the "OK" on this popup as I have no idea what it actually does and have no intention of finding out. NSFW-ish clickbait ads on the bottom of every page are one thing, but browser jacking popups? I don't know what the deal is but something needs to be done about this.
  3. Thread titles are all appearing like this on my phone screen. Anyone else getting this?
  4. Is anyone else having trouble uploading animated GIF avatars? I've been getting an error message every time. Are they no longer supported?
  5. Don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but regarding the Dallas Stars identity the only mark I've never really cared for is the Texas state outline. I love the current look, but the only logo in the package I really hate is the updated state outline. It's unbalanced and awkward to look at. Maybe placing the D-Star higher would improve the mark. As it is it's a very bottom-heavy design. My eyes are drawn to the D-Star, and being the central focal point it should be more towards the middle rather than the bottom. They could have left the D-Star out or just had a smaller star on its own like the original version.
  6. I'm sure I had this one come up: "14 people who DIED after taking stupid selfies!" Yeah, because that makes for pleasant early morning reading. -- Also I noticed the mobile site sometimes highlights posts with a flag. I tapped one to see what it does, and almost accidentally reported a post. D'oh.
  7. This is assuming they even keep the 82 game format with a new team. It's not like this was always a fixed amount.
  8. After getting used to it, I'm really liking the update. The only thing bugging me at the moment is not being able to go into HTML mode with posts, but I can live. I really like the new quoting system, although a bit clunky at times it prevents the pages and pages of quote waterfalls from happening, and that's definitely a plus.
  9. Same here. At the moment everything is taking up way too much space on screen compared to before. I'm also not a fan of circular avatars, but if this is something that can't be changed then I'll live.
  10. The username is the original registered name of the account. The display name is what you've changed your username to since, assuming you've changed it at all. I might be wrong, but that's my guess.
  11. Nope. Just click the "Add me as a friend" button on a member's profile. That's all there is to it.
  12. So a 34 team NHL, assuming the Coyotes and Panthers survive beyond 2019.
  13. Until it's fixed, you can use the Import photo from URL function instead. -- Also, I'm getting the "you do not have permission to use this feature" error message when I try to mark my notifications as read.
  14. Funnily enough, Tottenham were my team during a very brief football phase as a kid. My family's never really been into it - save for my Grandmother who's a big West Ham fan - so I never grew up with an interest in the game. But I picked Tottenham as my team simply because someone before me said it in a class activity and it was the easiest to remember. That and to six year old me, "West Ham" just sounded stoopid. My parents tried to convert me to being a West Ham supporter instead, going so far as to tell me that my newborn baby brother was also a West Ham fan. I always found that weird as they never cared about football before, but in hindsight they were probably more wary of my safety as West Ham were the local team, and given the, *ahem*, fan culture of that particular team I certainly don't blame them for trying. But despite me being a stubborn git and continuing to proclaim my loyalty to "Tott-num", I ended up just losing interest. Don't remember when or why, but one day it just stopped being a thing for me. These days, basically everything about the culture of the game puts me off, but where the media force feeding was once a personal gear grinder of mine I've since learned to tune it out and ignore it - which tends to be even more difficult when Euro and the World Cup come around
  15. Isn't this exactly why the Panthers got lumped into the same division as the Habs?
  16. I also have no connection to the Anaheim Ducks, the team I root for the most despite living more than 5,450 miles away and in a completely different country. I knew nothing of their successes (or rather, their lack of) when I became a fan, I picked them as my team after growing up watching a TV show about superhero hockey playing ducks from outer space, which for whatever reason planted a love of ice hockey into the back of my mind. I almost became a Red Wings fan, simply because red is my favourite colour, but seeing that logo with the duck mask and crossed hockey sticks again was what won me over. Even after they rebranded and got rid of everything but the Ducks moniker that drew me to the team, I stuck with them as my interactions with other fans online always made me feel that little bit less far away. So, how do I support my team when living on the other side of the world? The short answer could simply be "With great difficulty", but strictly speaking that would be incorrect. NHL coverage (or for that matter, any non-British sports coverage) is piss poor in my part of the world, so I follow them almost exclusively through the internet, whether that be through the highlight reels, game recaps, a number of Ducks-based blogs, even through Twitter and live notifications through my iPhone. There was also a time when I could subscribe to services like GameCenter Live and actually watch the games as they were happening, but I've had to abandon that luxury as working six days a week means I'm no longer able to stay up until 3 or 4am while streaming that one Ducks game I could catch every week. Nowadays I get my fix just fine with the highlight reels, when I remember to watch them. Or when I haven't spent my lunch break typing out a long-winded post such as this
  17. Maybe they're paying tribute to digital piracy Didn't think that was an unpopular opinion but oh well. It probably could've done without the black yoke but I don't mind it. If the current uniforms had to be changed now I'd get rid of the side panels first, and swap 'em out for a hemstripe. Then again I just spent eight years wanting them to dump the soulless wordmark jerseys for something more visually distinctive, so I'm not going to kick up a fuss for a while
  18. I like roundels on hockey uniforms. I think they work best as shoulder patches, not so much as primary crests.
  19. The Graveyard should have been a good learning tool. See what ends up there, and learn what NOT to do. Any thought to just locking threads such that people can see what went wrong/what not to do? Thing is if we're seeing locked threads here and there, wouldn't that clutter the boards up? I can see the Graveyard being a good learning tool, but I also agree with its burial. I'm sure there are a bunch of threads in there that just aren't worth seeing or mentioning, even if the odd thread was mildly amusing. At least it'll stop all the "lol inb4 graveyard"s. -- New warning points system is interesting. Is there a maximum number that one can get before being banned, or will the mods still get to a point where a member's bad enough to warrant suspending or banning anyway, regardless of how close to zero they are?
  20. Is that a scarf or is his neck on fire? He looks awfully happy about it.
  21. Despite what he's said there, you just know he'll pull something out of his arse at the last minute to keep them there. Like, more lengthy extensions and convenient forgetting of absolutely final deadlines!
