NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

I think many other places have that type of tax on "visiting employees" or whatever they want to call it, even if they don't kick that money directly to the local sports teams like it sounds like they do in Tennessee. If the law's invalid, they can probably just kick that athlete tax into the general fund and come up with a separate subsidy for the teams that happens to be similar in size to the revenue they get. -
Just a quick and dirty comparison based on latitude... South Africa in June/July would be like holding it in Florida in December/January.

Players in the "wrong" uniforms

I hate the new trend of having patches that look exactly like the banner. That looks so boxy and clunky. I hate to be the "my team does it right" guy, but yeah, our team does it right. 1. Looks like a memorial patch. 2. Too many leafs on the jersey. 3. I hate the giant rectangle patches too, but your team sucks at this just as much. I wouldn't have any kind of special patch. The guy is being honored by having a banner hung in his honor for at least as long as the team is in town and (usually) nobody will ever wear that number for that team again. A dinky little patch for one game seems pretty inconsequential. Have teams always had special patches? I don't remember this happening any earlier than maybe a few years ago. -

Devan Dubnyk and Ilya Bryzgalov. Dubnyk was Edmonton's starter the past few seasons but managed to play as bad as possible for an already bad team, to the point where the Oilers had no choice but to sign Bryzgalov, a goalie that couldn't get a contract after the Flyers bought him out. Dubnyk was eventually traded to Nashville and played two games before they realized what a horrible goalie he is, sent him to the minors, and then traded him to Montreal, who also put him down in the minors where he currently is. Bryzgalov was traded to Minnesota after a few months with the Oilers. I don't have a bad word to say about his time here. Dubnyk is this generation's Kevin Weekes. Weekes stuck around a while. I think Dubnyk is more like this generation's Pasi Nurminen. In ten years, someone will be looking at stats wondering who the heck this guy was that started all these games for the Oilers and then disappeared. -

Someone finally found a Stars picture where the new uniforms don't look good! -

All of us having to watch this for the Stanley Cup is Bettman's orgasmic fantasy. If the Coyotes won the Cup in Glendale, would he actually be... cheered? I have to imagine it would look like Emperor Palpatine exiting his shuttle on the Star Destroyer. -

Oh holy hell, they can't even run a coffee shop properly! Most people like to grab coffee on their way to work, which generally starts at 9 AM or before, so opening your Tim Hortons at 9 AM makes negative sense. The fact that you get two free tickets to an NHL game for buying a single cup of coffee and donut holes speaks for itself. -

Both of them count, because... they were in the uniform. And the thread is called "Players in the 'wrong' uniform". -

Pat Lafontaine only played 12 games in the red and black Sabres jerseys before this happened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2Pl7v4L0mg -

This paragraph stood out to me as a reason you don't hand them more money... Why would you book him if you lose money even if you set records? So, about the Panthers maxing out their cap next year... $4M/40000 people = $100 per ticket, which doesn't seem too far off. Then you have parking and food revenue. It's probably just creative accounting. A properly-motivated arena operator could host the second coming of Jesus on two consecutive nights and still claim a loss. -

I was going to make an "another franchise in a far-flung place it doesn't belong" joke, but since there's apparently a Tim Hortons in Oman, Glendale seems downright reasonable. -

Yes those great friends Arizona and Canada; they share the widest border in the known world. -

So you bought the Florida Panthers? -Right. For hundreds of millions of dollars? -Right. And now, less than four months later, you have decided that the team is unsustainable without massive government subsidy? -Yepper. -

You would think in a city like Detroit, cops would be doing something more productive then the "anti-counterfeiting jersey movement". What a joke. Federal agents... they normally don't handle shoplifting or even a regular murder. -

It's tricky because I have only every seen one photo of those. I spent a good twenty minutes nitpicking the spike at the bottom of the crest or the thickness of the lines and the amount of teal in the upper corner of the triangles, but there is one major major difference: in the real photo, it appears the shoulder patch is on white with a more truncated yoke. This has the shoulder patch on purple with a full rounded yoke. -

To me his right uniform is the Ottawa Senators. I always associated him with the Senators and in their 96/97 uniforms. I remember him in this: -

Just imagine if you were a fan of both (or all three?) of those teams, though! It would be like the universe was reshaping itself according to your will, like you were Dr. Manhattan or something. -

They'd never do it on a real lake, because then you'd have to worry about getting it cold enough. Plan an outdoor game on a pond, then it'll be a record warm winter in Minnesota and you'd have 2" thick ice. Maybe movie to Alaska; then you could pretty much be guaranteed the cold. Make it an exhibition so people don't bitch about the pond ice not being perfect or something like that. Actually, I hear there are some pretty good local club teams up there... made up entirely of players from the town... maybe one of them could play an NHL team? -

Then they'll just have them in domed stadiums instead of trying to have them outdoors at night. I can't see any good reason for rooting against the LA-Anaheim game. -

We know a hockey game can be played outdoors in the desert... the Rangers and Kings played outdoors in Las Vegas. But this is the Coyotes we're talking about! Actually, it might work... if we can get the Blackhawks and Red Wings to play each other in Glendale, I bet the crowd might be pretty decent! -

Wait a minute, is that for ANY ticket at the ACC? As in, $150 even for something in the nosebleeds? God does Toronto have some ridiculous ticket inflation. It depends on the game. On Stubhub, some Leafs games start at around $50, while others start at $150. The next Leafs-Habs game at the ACC starts at $230 (and that's just standing room only, if you want a seat, it's at least $300). I was on Ticketmaster, and on a Tuesday night, (what I'm assuming are) standing room tickets were $40; real seats started at $70. -

I've seen worse. They used to have a thing where you get 2 free tickets when you buy a $20 bottle of Absolute or Stoli or something from Fry's (a local grocery store). maybe but that's $24.75 for a NHL ticket, a hot dog and Pepsi per person to see the current Stanley Cup champs play. I spent more than that to take my wife to see Phantom of the Opera for her birthday years ago. ... on a Saturday night, no less. Those should be the easy tickets to sell.
