  1. "It’s easy to understand the tepid interest. After six consecutive playoff DNQs, the Canes are a diminishing asset on the local sports scene. The team ranked 29th in attendance in the NHL last season with an average of just 12,594, down nearly 3,000 from 2013-14 and ahead only of Florida. " Naturally, my interest was piqued that not only was Arizona not last in attendance last year, there weren't even second last! This led me to look up the attendance for the whole league. These are the only teams below 16,000 per game: Columbus 15,511 Islanders 15,334 New Jersey 15,189 Winnipeg 15,037 Arizona 13,345 Carolina 12,594 Florida 11,265 Only three franchises with serious attendance issues... actually not too shabby! Time to add another.
  2. Does anyone else have this problem? When I view the boards on iOS on Safari, my avatar gets swapped out for another image. When I had drunk Pat Kane, it turned into a cartoon shark. Now I have Spaceship Earth, and it turns into a MLB.com Shop ad. It appears normally on Chrome for Windows and iOS. Edit: Annnnnnd it's gone.
  3. 100% of the 122 teams in the four major sports leagues have played in at least one other city. Nobody plays all their games at home! College football is trying...
  4. I don't think you get how currency conversion works.I do. That was my point. Fork over a billion loonies before the price goes up or your currency goes down, Quebecor. Or, you can try booking 250 nights of your new arena and charging NHL prices for Remparts games. $500M USD is $500M USD no matter which currency you start from. I don't see what charging more in USD would accomplish. Les Quebecois will actually show up to the games... which will put the Nordiques ahead of revenue for a Las Vegas team, even with the currency disparity. Also, the loonie was worth more than the American dollar as recently as a couple of years ago; currency values rise and fall.

  6. Was the deadline today? I would have bet that Seattle would have submitted a bid after the Coyotes almost moved back there a couple of years ago. Everyone else probably decided it's not worth $500M for an expansion team when you can buy the Coyotes for $200M (generously).
  7. It's too hard to drive the bus up and down I-5 for eight more games?
  8. .90 on the dollar IS good for the loonie versus the USD. Back when Winnipeg and Quebec left, it was more like .60 on the dollar. Multiply the conversion rate by the "Canadians care about hockey more" rate, and a team will be incredibly successful there.
  9. Has to be, right? You don't flat out terminate a contract over simple possession. It has to be more. This is so strange. TMZ said he got picked up on June 17. Lombardi and the Kings said they didn't know until Friday at the Draft, June 26. Perhaps someone from up north can verify this but from what I read Oxy is banned in Canada so that may make this a bit more of an issue. It's "banned" here, too, without a prescription. If he had a doctor's prescription and was carrying a normal amount for personal use, I don't think it would be a big issue trying to bring it into Canada. They may not let you, but I don't think they'd send you to jail.
  10. Hunting down the dream? Killing dreams is a good thing in Glendale?
  11. Damn, I was going to make the joke that the trade was contingent on Pronger agreeing to hang out with Anthony LeBlanc, but Don Maloney outdid me. charger77, don't assume that he knows that.
  12. I think there's actually 32 markets that could support an NHL team; whether or not the NHL can find them... I agree, the league could easily expand into Seattle and Quebec and succeed there, but as long as they have teams in locations such as Phoenix and Sunshine over Milwaukee and Portland they're going to have revenue and marketing problem. Move Florida and Arizona (even though there's a chance Phoenix could work), expand/move to Portland, Milwaukee, Quebec City, and pick one from Seattle/Las Vegas/Hamilton/Kansas City.
  13. I think there's actually 32 markets that could support an NHL team; whether or not the pieces fall into place...
  14. OK, here's the thing. Minor League hockey teams tend to lead a very precarious existence with a dependence on gate money that greatly exceeds the NHL. Weekend games do a heck of a lot better at the gate than week day games. So yeah, minor league teams do 3 in 3s all the time. That this has suddenly become an insurmountable burden is just another sign that the NHL's Western teams have no bloody clue how to run a minor league organization and should not be listened to in this case. Agreed. Again, the Sabres bought the Rochester Americans (a relatively stable franchise) back in 2011 for $5M. And the team wasn't even for sale. $5M was the "can't turn this down" price.
  15. Youre never going to Grow the Game that way, admiral.
  16. Really? Hopefully your statement isn't connected with his sexuality. Really? All this guy did was make a true statement: Michael Sam did not succeed in the NFL. You might be reading a little too much into it. You are correct. After he flames out in the CFL, it will prove my opinion that any pro or semi-pro football uniform is the wrong one. No 7th-round draft pick should ever get as much attention as him...unless it's because he turned into a draft steal and superstar. Same with backup QBs and little league baseball pitchers. It's all drama all the time over there. He already did well in semi-pro football at Missouri.
  17. Minor league hockey is not a big money business. The Sabres bought the Rochester Amerks (a long-time and stable franchise that draws at least in the middle of the AHL) for only $5M. The CCSLC could probably buy an ECHL team. Swapping out a bus ride down I-90 for plane tickets across the country is a big change for these teams... confirmed by the fact that the league isn't even making these new teams play a full schedule! The business model needs too much massaging to make this happen; it shouldn't be happening.
  18. I definitely think this logo and even that God-awful jersey is salvageable. Forgive me if I have already posted this in this thread, but I actually had that hat. I found it in a local supermarket years and years ago. Unfortunately, the hat is lost into the aether now. I really like that logo, and it has to be relatively rare to have merchandise made from a proposed logo.
  19. I never paid much attention before, but it's remarkable how far away St. John's is from anything else.
  20. Fun fact: he was given a key to the city that was technically revoked. The mayor gave it to him contingent on getting 10 TDs and a playoff spot. He had 5 (and obviously no playoffs). I hope they asked for it back.
  21. It's fine if the Jets want the new Moose to ape their color scheme, but they really should have at least one brown as a logo-only color. A grayish-bluish moose looks weird, and I think the whole thing just kinda blahs together. The original was better.
  22. Cheap hydroelectric power and hockey fans are both plentiful to le nord-est. You're welcome.
