Apparently Fox also has matching new touchdown graphics for NFL too...

...it's awful. The CG team logo adds a little flair, but this just looks lazy.

I'll give them some credit for adding the city skyline backdrop for the teams. Though, honestly, I prefer the original TD animation from this package over this one by an inch, even if that one was more in your face on every "TOUCHDOWN" than this newer one

  2. The refresh continues as they just rebranded CBS This Morning to CBS Mornings. Much of the graphics and music not only align with the synergy of what's seen around the TV show promos and CBS Sports, but also with Sunday Morning, including hints of the classic theme in this revised one for CBS Mornings. Here's a small look at the new graphics.

Also, the transparent CBS bug on the left looks like a permanent change. It was there when I was watching The Price is Right later in the day as opposed to it's usual SD-safe position on the right hand side

FOX with NFL-style score-bug for college.....but without logos. Just....colors. WTF.

They started this last year. Logos were up for Week 1, but for whatever reason they switched to the college name and AP/ CFP ranking (if necessary) the following week. Not sure what confusion was there when they had the logos on the score bug that led to the change.

  4. Ravens are leaning more into the "Never Less" font that's all over their social media. If you saw the art wrapping around the lower level walls during the game vs the Saints, it has more of a goth house feel with the bricks and the transparent logo in white. Big change after going for years with a purple/black/gold backdrop featuring the standard script and logos all across.

This isn't so much on the studio end, but my least favorite thing of the NBA on ESPN has to be the dreaded end of quarter-full length commercial-30 second sponsored highlight clip where the sponsor read takes up 20 seconds of it-full length commercial stretch. TNT doesn't do it but ESPN sure loves that 5 minutes of ads strategy. I don't know why it's not uniform for a quarter break leaguewide and why there's a discrepancy between the two national broadcasters, but it's there

I loathe those segments with a passion. Literally, what's the point of a quick 30-second segment after a few commercials to analyze the Nets' 3-pt shooting or Chris Paul playing stifling D, only to immediately go right back to the same recycled ads that would have sent you straight to the next quarter or halftime? At least I know I'm not the only one with this sentiment

ESPN hasn't had any consistency outside of their announcing crew and the constant emphasis on the "storylines" of the league over the actual performances on the court. And at this point, both are a blessing and curse. The social media audience, which they try to cater to as equally as their traditional TV and radio consumers, live off of and enjoy those things. But despite that, everyone who solely cares for the game being played on the court is being alienated to some degree. The worst part of all this? No other media giant is willing to or can compete with the exposure that ESPN gives the NBA. On top of that, obviously, is that money talks. Only way to punish the mothership is to beat them at their own game, which isn't impossible with less popular sporting events, but very much improbable unless ESPN gives up their rights.

The way they have those logos squeezed into those wide rectangular boxes, not fitting vertically yet having so much extra space on the left and right,  looks sort of awkward.  I think they should just go with "CHI" and "DET," and if still they really want to keep a logo in the box, they should make it smaller and shove it towards the left.

For me, the downside that stands out to me is that I'm not a fan of how the logos have a 3D tilt inside the boxes. With some logos, it may be hard to notice without looking closely, but for others, it's a bit weird. It took me a week or two to notice it and personally it would have been better without it for the always-on scoreboard. It's fine with me when it's featured on the go-to/out-of-break scoreboard and the intro graphics, but that's it.

The font on the graphics matches the new CBS Sports logo from what I see.

And the emphasis on the "eye" in the 3D elements of these new graphics are even more impressive. It'll be interesting to see what carries over and what changes once the regular season starts in September. Displaying team W-L record is critical in 2021, so expect that to come into play as well when they have to cram it into the scorebug after Week 1

What's the plan for ABC simulcasts? Was the Raiders game a one-off? Chiefs-Ravens seemed like an obvious pick to simulcast but they had Dancing with the Stars instead, which is somehow still on TV after like 15 years.

Raiders-Saints was a one-off simulcast to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first MNF game. If it was me handling the schedule, I surely would have had Chiefs-Ravens that week instead.

ESPN is indeed pushing to have ABC simulcasts in the next TV deal with the NFL. And I have no doubt they'll get their wish. The ratings would easily trump any recent episode of DWTS. Not to mention, they can negotiate for better games on their schedule than in years' past, even though they may not have the flexibility of NBC and their SNF lineup.

  9. Seeing ABC flirt with the one-off returns of MNF and postseason baseball (depending on the longevity of this new format) has got to be very delightful. Makes me wish ESPN would use the network to carry more sports. They're heading in the right direction though by lobbying the NFL to get ABC involved and hopefully, Super Bowls back again as well. Not sure the same can be said for MLB because there's a very slim chance Disney would let Sunday Night Baseball take away the summer game show block on the same evening or let alone take up LCS and/or WS games when we've seen Fox get beat by some scripted shows and sometimes SNF, obviously, in the past.

  10. I'll start with some more recent absences and departures that have left my sports universe:

    • ESPNews as an actual sports news network as opposed to now being the equivalent of ESPN 2. I find myself wishing I could just tune in and watch the anchors dish out news and highlights as the day in sports unfolds. I might add that as a compromise, I'd be comfortable with some form of SportsCenter on at every hour of the day, which is what they did in like 2010 if my memory serves me right.
    • Gus Johnson and Marv Albert (yes, that Marv Albert) calling NFL games. Gus' NFL resume speaks for itself from the Stokley catch of 2010 to the Jags hail mary (same year, I think?). As for Marv, I think he was decent when he returned to CBS after the March Madness deal with Turner almost linked the two together. Shoot, while I'm on the Gus tab, I wonder if Fox would let him cut a deal with CBS/Turner to call tournament games....that, we ALL could agree on, is dearly missed.
    • Locally, as an O's fan, I miss Fred Manfra and Joe Angel calling games on the radio. Angel retired before 2019 and Manfra stepped down midway through 2018.
    • Thursday Night Football when NFL Network shared it with CBS. This was the best presentation I've seen so far from them. NBC was okay, and Fox has just a slight rehash of the regular NFL games aside from some graphics differences and the pregame show in NYC.
    • Shopping for gear across the major sports leagues BEFORE Fanatics swallowed up their services. I miss the unique experiences in going to the NFL Shop website or flipping through that catalog. Same goes for the NBA Store, MLBShop.com, etc. when the leagues all had their stuff under control.
    • ESPN's 2-Minute Drill. Who didn't love a sports game show on TV?
    • ABC Sports and ESPN as separate, but tightly bonded divisions.

And (if not in unison with each league's return), the day fans can come back to the events.

But like you, I'm hoping we the fans looking to attend are there with them once we're back up and running.

  12. I've got two as far as NFL uniforms go. First off, the Cardinals. I'm okay with the home unis, at minimum. If they were to change wholesale within the next few years, I would rather they just strip down both uniforms where you'd get rid of the white and black everywhere except for the number and NOB.

Cardinals' Larry Fitzgerald waves off retirement, decides to ...

As for the road uniforms, I think you can make it work in a similar fashion. All white jersey, red NOB, same TV numbers as the chest and back seen here. Just get white pants and double stripes down the side and you're good.

Chris Chamberlain, Steve Breaston - Steve Breaston Photos ...

Secondly, there's the current Jags unis, which I do like. The "bland" design doesn't bother me at all. The only combo that might bother me is white-over-teal. But for the most part, everything else works for me when I see them on the field.

I was going to post this back on the 26th (which is when Opening Day would have been), but since it'll be a while before we get any baseball games again, I just want to point something out:

Since the start of the 2011 MLB season, the Nationals and Orioles have had the same graphics package with MASN. The other 28 teams have changed theirs at least twice in that span (granted, the Dodgers and Cubs moved away from regional sports networks to start their own channels, and the Astros went from FSN Houston to CSN Houston to Root Sports/AT&T Southwest).

Case in point, here's a screencap of the SNY graphic from a Mets game in 2014:

    15798836165_5db082f469_n.jpg

Then the score bug from from a game in 2016:

    TWISNYWalker_s_solo_homer___MLB_com.0.jp

And then the score bug that was seen in Spring Training (and possibly for the 2020 season whenever it starts):

    spacer.png

Now, a MASN screencap from 2011:

    mmkDkTpyulV7VAez-jOoJl-Ys-QrECdQgCyS7pUA

And here's one from this year:

    ERan9tVWoAEmplW?format=jpg&name=medium

If you're too busy to read everything before this, the question is simple: How come the Nats/O's have the same graphics package after all these years while everyone else changes theirs every few years?

Just a heads up: that pic of the 2011 screencap didn't load

I'll assume you're well aware that the both teams (90/10 split that favors the Orioles) do indeed own MASN. If not, glad to have filled you in with new information 😅

Other than that, I'd like to assume the graphics department at MASN has been fallen lazy to some degree or the O's haven't invested in them too heavily. Maybe the legal battle between the two teams over this network might play a factor, but I doubt it's slowing them down as far as new graphics. What makes it more embarrasing is that it's the only team-owned RSN as far as the MLB scene goes whereas every other team is at least partially owned by a media company like a Spectrum or AT&T.

If anything, maybe the change in ownership might be motivated to push out changes with MASN soon. The current owner's getting old and passed most of his power down to his son after the 2018 season, who's already making some non-baseball changes around the team. My honest opinion is that once the MASN lawsuit is over, the Nats will find a way to move to NBC Sports Washington and the O's probably sell off MASN to another company or keep it around and begin to invest in new graphics, hopefully in 2021.

  14. That 70's Show (1998-2006): No episode with a scene in the Foreman basement was complete without that Packers helmet hanging out under the stairs.

Not to mention, this from an older thread:

The Good Place (2016-2020): Enter Jason Mendoza. Quite possibly the biggest Jags fan I've ever encountered, and even moreso for Blake Bortles.

Can't find the right screenshot, but he does play an exhibition game of Titans/Jags on Madden 18.

And no, this isn't a typo considering that Bortles is no longer a Jaguar. But yes, that is Lisa Kudrow as a guest star in a fake Jags jersey from an episode that aired this January.

March Madness usually had a Turner based graphics package, so the rest of CBS doesn't go with them

(so maybe they'll update their NBA graphics sometime this century when the season restarts in the playoffs or comes back in the fall?)

Although, I felt the now-retired package was more based off of CBS (the font choice feels more akin to that from their NFL graphics than anything at Turner IMO). Hopefully it pairs well with what CBS may bring with whatever changes come after Super Bowl LV, especially since they have the two most widely watched events of the year in sports next year

You're right, you just solved talk radio. What people really want to hear is CBS Sports Radio where some guy talks to himself and takes a thousand pregnant pauses in arguing that the thing you like is bad or the thing you don't like is good.

This is why I prefer FS Radio over CBSSR, where the hosts can hold their own ground. I could even put up with ESPN Radio, but sadly the ESPN affiliate here is a news station that would only air them unless it's any of the championship games. They'll put on Navy football any given Saturday before ESPN Radio.

Also, while I'm on the topic, I want to rant about one local station in Baltimore. It's getting hard to listen to when the lineup of hosts is so thin, the 9pm-12am is sometimes working weekends. Then it in turn forces national radio to start early (9pm on Saturdays and 6 on Sundays without midday sports). I know terrestrial radio is a dying breed thanks to smart phones, unlimited data plans, aux cables, smart speakers, etc., but when I'm not in a music mood in my car, I'd much rather hear a local guy give his take on who the Ravens will sign this offseason at 9:24pm on a Saturday as opposed to CBSSR for the rest of the night.
