Well, I think is a wrong uniform for him.  I don't think a player wearing a uniform has to be "forgettable" or "blink of an eye" for it to be the player's wrong uniform, at all; in fact I think many of the posts in this thread are quite memorable, and that's why people are posting them.

Since you brought star players into this, I guess the classic example of this is Michael Jordan.  I would go so far as to say that Michael Jordan in a Wizards uniform is practically the epitome of a player in wrong uniform.  That does not mean that Jordan's years as a Wizard were forgettable or unsuccessful; quite the opposite actually, as pretty much every sports fan knows that he played for the Wizards the last two years of his career, and he actually had two pretty good years as a Wizard.  I'm a Wizards fan and I would love to claim that Jordan looked right in a Wizards uniform, but the fact is that he did not, and I am not going to pretend that he did.  The point is that he spent the vast majority of his career in a different uniform, and just rode out the last 2 years of his career in a different, "wrong" uniform ... like Hough.

I'm gonna get ripped a new one for this but I don't think Jordan in a Wizards uniform is "wrong." Of course his right uniform is the Bulls but I feel like there's a middle ground between right uniform and wrong uniform. Like if there's a third level of uniform that's neither right nor wrong. Where it's recognizable and not odd looking even though it's clearly not the right or best uniform. I feel like wrong uniform is one that most regular fans didn't even know existed and in general people do know that Jordan played for the Wizards. To me wrong uniform most fans kinda go "woah when did that happen? I didn't know he played there!" And that's like Hank Aaron in a Brewers uniform, Piazza on the Marlins, and Frank Thomas on the A's. So in that sense, in my opinion, Jordan in a Wizards uniform isn't the best definition of wrong uniform.

  2. Does anyone know why the Marlins got a custom teal-colored Jackie Robinson 50th anniversary patch in 97? Only them and the Expos got custom patches. The Expos I understand because the wording on the patch was switched to French but the Marlins only changed the color of the patch. Why didn't other teams get custom colored patches?

Perhaps. They had a black alternate, though, and it was a doozy. A well-designed teal alternate (plus a teal cap) would've made an already good set a lot more complete in my eyes, complementing everything else quite nicely.

The Marlins didn't have a black in game alternate until 2002. The 93-01 teams only had 3 in game jerseys... home whites, road grays, and a home white vest alternate that was worn with teal sleeves from 93-95 and with black sleeves from 96-02.

Not the only flaw - lack of teal jersey was another. Even aside from that, the general neglect of teal after the first couple years bothered me.

How common were solid colored alternates in the early to mid 90s? I'm curious because the Marlins having an all teal BP jersey and not using it as an in game jersey doesn't seem like something I'd call a flaw for the time period. Like if they still had that color scheme in today's world they'd definitely have a teal alternate jersey but not having it back then seems pretty common for the time.

He pitched for around 10 years as a Dodger, then around 10 years as a Ranger, and then finished his career with 2 years as a Marlin.  I would hardly call a uniform that a player wore for 2 years out of a 20+ year career his "right" uniform, regardless of whether he was an opening day starter when wearing them.

It didn't say it's his right uniform, I said it's not a wrong uniform for him. There is a difference. And I did say I'm biased as a Marlins fan since day one. I did agree with your prior post about him. As far as time wearing that uniform, Hough in a Marlins uniform is much like Zobrist in a Cubs uniform and it's hard to call Zobrist in a Cubs uniform wrong even though he's a Ray to most people.

It eventually was centered to the F, but I think not until 1995

Believe it or not, the Florida Marlins cap logo was not centered to the F until 2001. It's an absolute eyesore looking back on it now. Basically the only flaw of such an amazing uniform set. This also means the two teal caps were never centered to the F as the all teal cap was dropped in 96 and the teal and black cap was dropped in 97.

Maybe not a "significant" player, but I would add Charlie Hough to that list.  I remember watching him pitch for the Marlins in 1993, and remember it looking very jarring to see this oldish-looking guy in his mid-40s rocking that teal-heavy uniform that was clearly designed to look cool and trendy.  A guy who spent the vast majority of his career pitching in the relatively traditional looks of the 70's Dodgers and 80's Rangers just did not look right in a Marlins uniform.  I would say this is almost a case of "wrong uniform, wrong generation."

True but as a Marlins fan since 93 (actually earlier), it's hard to call Hough in a Marlins uniform as his wrong uniform. Being the Opening Day starter for both of the first 2 seasons, he didn't have a "blink and you'll miss it" role here like the other guys.

  8. I posted this last year with pics so I won't bother with all the pics again but along with Mike Piazza and Andre Dawson above, other significant players who have a Marlins uniform as their wrong uniform include Terry Pendleton, Tony Perez, Tim Raines, Aaron Boone, Ryan Dempster, Byung Hyung Kim, Adrian Gonzalez, Jason Grilli, Joe Girardi, Trevor Hoffman, Carlos Lee, Dan Haren, Mat Latos, Carlos Zambrano, Tino Martinez, Heath Bell, Rafael Furcal, and Placido Polanco.

and he was still recognized by the organization as a Marlins Alumni. He even showed up wearing a Marlins jersey at the final Dolphin Stadium game.

No reason why they wouldn't recognize him. He did play here. It's not like he passed through here on a waiver claim or in a three way trade or something odd like that.

  10. Yeah what's the deal with that teal stuff on Phillips, I've seen that more than a few times on him and it's so weird. Nolan Arenado has also worn teal for the Rockies as well last season. I guess it's the same type of thing as Cespedes always wearing neon yellow junk. Accessories should always been in team colors but I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here.

  11. Unveiled in November of 1995, this is what the 1998 Inaugural Tampa Bay Devil Rays were supposed to look like...

By the time 1998 came around, the caps were dropped in favor of the TB cap which was originally intended to only be an alternate cap and the purple undershirts of the home jersey were switched to black like the road undershirts. This "unused" uniform is a bit interesting because the Rays did a 1998 throwback in 2009 and wore the above caps which were never actually worn in 98. So, in an interesting oddity, this is one of the only times a team has worn a uniform for the first time as a throwback and not in the year it was actually worn. The 1998 Devil Rays uniform was first worn on the field in 2009. Enjoy that one! lol

Sticking to the 1998 MLB expansion teams, the Arizona Diamonbacks unveiled a look in 95 that was also tweaked once it got to the field in 98. Here's a pic from the unveiling...

By 98 all the jerseys were the same but all the white caps were gone and the all teal caps as well. The black cap with the teal brim was kept as the road cap and, ironically, the cap that became the home primary, the all purple cap, was nowhere to be seen in this unveiling. It's funny because we always remember the original DBacks as a purple team but looking at this picture, they seemed to be a teal team first with purple being secondary. Of note, while the cap arrangement did change, the white and teal caps may have still gotten sporadic use in 98. I haven't been able to confirm that they were dropped completely.

I get the point that you're making; but your example in Rickey Henderson is not a good one.  In Rickey's first stint with the A's, he passed 100 stolen bases twice and broke the single-season record; and he also appeared in All-Star Games and the postseason.  So before he came to the Yankees he was already a major star who had enjoyed lots of national exposure.

And, for the record, both the Yankees and the A's count as Rickey's right uniforms.  For me the criterion that should be used in order to establish a "wrong" uniform is that the average fan would not remember that the player played for the team in question.  While no one is unaware of Rickey's time with the Yankees or with the A's, many fans might have forgotten about his many other stops. The wrongest of all wrong uniforms for Rickey is that of the Red Sox.

(I cannot speak about Ichiro because his entire career took place after I retired as a follower of baseball.)

I pulled those off the top of my head as examples just because the Yankees have more national exposure than the As and Mariners and Ricky and Ichiro came to mind first. I didn't research anything before typing it. With that said I'm pretty positive Ichiro fit my example to the T. He's clearly a Mariner despite a stint with the Yankees. Getting to 3,000 in Miami also makes his Marlin uniform more right than his Yankee uniform.

His only meaningful prime-time national exposure came in another uniform

There's absolutely no way that this should be the criteria for right or wrong uniform. There are so many players and teams that just don't get the same national exposure as other teams so you can't go by where they got meaningful national exposure. If that's the way you look at it then, for example, Ricky Henderson and Ichiro's "right" uniforms would both be the Yankees and not the A's or Mariners, and that's just wrong.

I do think the road uniform is better with the alterations. The teal used to just blend in with the navy wordmark and white outline. However, this prevented the tweak I actually wanted to see:

Using teal like the Orioles use orange (a statement I've been saying a lot lately) would allow the Mariners to stand out from the other navy teams and promote their unique color scheme. Also, going down to one outline makes for clearer scripts.

    I like this!

That's the point: they're supposed to look vintage.

Yeah but it's only vintage if we always recognize that team or that jersey as always being a cream color, such as the Giants. If it were a team that always wore white and they suddenly switched to cream it doesn't work the same. Were the Mets actually wearing cream in the 60's?

  16. 4 hours ago, Ben in LA said:

I like cream uniforms in MLB; I think colors actually pop a bit more.  However, I think only classic teams (read: pre-LCS) can pull it off correctly.  I'd LOVE to have a cream Dodgers alternate (without a NOB and any sleeve patches or piping) to be worn on Sundays.

I used to like cream MLB jerseys but now they just look like dirty, stained, old uniforms to me. I realized it last weekend when I saw someone wearing a cream Mets jersey for the first time since the Mets dropped it. My first reaction wasn't "Oooh what a beautiful cream colored jersey!"... my reaction was "Ewww, when was the last time that guy washed that jersey?" It's like my brain forgot the cream existed and my mind read it as being the white jersey but just stained.
