  1. Nike does such a terrible job with UCLA style shoulder stripes, just absolutely abysmal.

The frustrating part is that I have to believe there's a solution to be had, they just aren't interested in the time and effort it would take when it's so much more profitable to just plug everyone in to their existing templates.  And obviously, the teams don't care enough (or probably even think about it enough) to fight them on it.

And there's visual proof that it can be done. As a whole Nike's design work is well above what Under Armour puts out, but one area where UA is unarguably head and shoulders above Nike is in this type of traditional shoulder stripping...

If you look at the before and after with Nike's takeover of UCLA you'd have to be one of those people who really just don't care about these things to not see what's obviously a regression in the way this style of stripping is supposed to work...

Taken as a whole, Nike probably wins in the Nike vs Under Armour vs Adidas football uniform argument, but it's annoying that their status at the top of the heap has let them get lazy when it comes to things like this and their stubborn insistence on forcing teams into their per-existing color choices.

They're making plenty of money.  They can do better.

  2. I think the biggest issue in the Cardinals' lack of tradition is the multiple relocations. Ending up in Arizona in a modern stadium makes it hard to remember that the Chicago Cards wearing faded hand me down jerseys from the U of Chicago Maroons even existed.

That said, I don't know why "simple" has to read as "traditional" necessarily.

  3. It’s nice of everyone to drop in pictures of various chrome helmets that “work”… (I’m not even going to dignify the perfection remarks).  Seeing all these terrible helmets scroll by just lets me know my initial assessment was correct.

    100% awful.

    (IMO of course)

More confirmation that the Lions alternate helmets will be worn with the color rush and new unis in 2024.

Well, the current rules state that an alternate helmet can only be worn with an alternate uniform, so I guess they have no choice.  I still think it’ll be white and will be worn later with an all white uniform once the NFL’s lack of backbone waters down the rules again.

It’s hard to imagine they’d go with a dark gray helmet when they’re changing the whole uniform in a year. Unless of course they plan on adding even more of that ugly dark gray color with the new look.  Ugh.  Nike sure does have a weird boner for ugly shades of dark gray.  Which is strange because they’ve managed to make a good looking uniform from charcoal gray, anthracite, etc. exactly (let me check)… zero times.

The Panthers need to avoid two key pitfalls: stripeless pants and blank, pants-matching socks. I don't have any faith they actually will but if they do then I can't be too upset.

So yes, Kansas City folks would have the right to be upset if Arizona adds it as a core color in their update.

Look, I'm not saying it's going to happen or that I'd even want it to, but whether or not the Cardinals add yellow-gold elements to their uniforms has absolutely zero to do with the Kansas City Chiefs. Would the Chief get upset?  Probably not, but if they did, they can kick rocks. No one cares.

As I Viking fan, did I appreciate it when the Ravens decided to use purple and gold?  Not especially, but you know who didn't give a rat's ass what me or any other Viking fan felt about the choice?  The Ravens.  Anymore than the Panthers spent much time worrying about what the Raiders thought about their silver helmets and pants worn with black jerseys.

Arizona's red is Cardinal red, a dark red noticeably different from the Chiefs' bright scarlet red. If anything, cardinal red and athletic gold makes me think of USC, not KC. Add to that, my guess is that the Cardinals, if they add yellow, would use it in equal amounts to black. Even though the Chiefs have that odd black trim on their logo, black isn't really one of their colors and doesn't show up anywhere else on the uniform.

Giants and Bills... royal and red.

Bears and Broncos... navy and orange.

  7. I feel like it’s safe to assume the Panthers redesign won’t go well. In the past few years they’ve shown a real lack of taste with the bad choices of mix and match combinations as well as that dopey black helmet.  Any team that would Okay that all blue logo (during a time period when this change was already in the works) is not giving me a lot of confidence in their ability to handle an all new uniform.

    Hope I’m wrong.

Yep, that would do it for me.  If that thin Panther Blue stripe ended in a point, about an inch or so from the bottom of the helmet in back, cool too.

Gotta burn the Black pants, though.

If it were up to me personally, gray pants would be the only option, but it seems like for the NFL in 2023 that ship has sailed.

I'm telling you, the Panthers just need to keep the same helmet and change the striping out for a solid thick Black stripe with a thin Panther Blue stripe in the middle and it would be perfect.

I think I tried that not long ago...

Someone on the Cardinals message board (ASFN) has apparently seen what appears to be a new helmet.

That's doesn't sound encouraging to me. The only thing the Cardinals don't need to change is their helmet.

  11. If they have to cover their entire helmet with a flag design (and let's be clear, they don't have to... despite how it looks when you channel surf on Saturday afternoons on the fall, ugly design is not some sort of CFB mandate) the current wavy flag design is the worst. Like a cross between a cheesy stoner van and a back-up hockey goalie. The best of the full-helmet flag designs was the first one... much more graphic and clean.

    spacer.png

    The uniform that went with it was terrible, but the helmets beats the current nightmare. Of course, that's not saying much. If you insist on using the flag in some form, but are willing to get away from the full covering, this is your best option;

    Or the black version;

But, check out this beaut from 1970...

There is logic to that statement, though. If you have a team that is supposed to be based on running and defense, you don't want to have Steve Spurrier coach it (because he'll admittedly want to 'pitch the rock cause it was so nice out there') or possibly Aaron Rodgers, because he will check out of called runs because he wants to throw.

Agreed. I don't think anybody is saying Carr is a better QB than Rodgers, but what you can't argue with is that the Jets could've had Carr with zero compensation, and could at least hope to have their QB situation settled for the foreseeable future.  Instead, they're probably going to have to trade a crazy amount of quality players and/or high draft picks for a guy that's going to be doing this exact same "look at me" dance in approximately 11 months.

They better load up and go for broke this season (and does this instantly make them better than KC and Cincy? I have my doubts) because the shelf life on this seems short.

Still no decision on Rodgers since but he wants the Jets to get Randall Cobb,Allen Lazard, Marcedes Lewis and even OBJ.

Let me see if I got this right...

So this greasy jackass comes crawling out of a cave, still wearing the diaper to catch his olive oil enema, and starts making demands of a team he doesn't even play for yet, and hasn't even confirmed that he will.

And the Jets... get this... start to give in to his demands before he's even agreed to play for them!

This disaster is going to be glorious!!
