Say, when DID the NFL implement the 5-year rule anyway? The Patriots changed jerseys three times in three years from 1993-95, so I'm guessing it was after. I'm sure Goodell and his cronies would LOVE to bring that rate of change that the Patriots used to today's league, however.

In the meantime, I'm still waiting on the Commanders' re-brand...

I'd say probably about the same time Nike took over the contract.

Was the Lions current set unpopular? While not perfect, I thought it was a huge improvement over the two sets that came before it. The all-gray was the worst part, and then the blank white pants being introduced late in its life cycle also weren't great, but other than that it was their best look since the Barry Sanders era set. It was definitely good enough IMO that I'm dreading the new set, fearing that there's a reasonable chance it will be downgrade.

I'm starting to think the NFL wants to copy soccer, but can't talk themselves into swapping out uniforms every 1-2 years like soccer teams do now. That's why they have the 5 year rule, with the caveat that it can be tossed out under that time if someone else buys the team.

Probably not too many folks watching Concacaf Cup action tonight but I just finished the New England vs CA Independiente (Panama) match and it was Concacaf-y as hell. Chiefly concerning the broadcast, on something crash-prone called Tubi, a one-man booth of a man named George who I'm half-convinced they just pulled from outside the stadium.

    His highlights included:

    - Initially stating that Dave Romney is no relation to Mitt, but then changing course and mentioning four times that actually yes, he is somewhere from a third to fifth cousin, exactly which is unclear

    - Repeatedly pronouncing Andrew Farrell's name like Pharrell, the producer/pop star

    - Sharing his research into Panamanian soccer, including threats of an upcoming strike (again he said this four times) and that the league uses conferences, like the NBA does (not like the MLS does...?)

    - Rapping Mike Jones lyrics when DeJuan Jones touched the ball, only to conclude the bar with "Ah, my rapping sucks"

    - Coining the nickname "Bobby Wood, up to no good"

    - Incorrectly announcing Chancalay's goal as his first as a Rev

    - Sharing that he would drop his mic and walk away if his brother was substituted into the match (literally what?)

I maintain once again: MLS's efforts to kill off all the public-access vibes of the North American game are gravely misguided and need to be stopped.

Even more Concacaf-y, Cruz Azul and Leon had over 32 minutes of added time due to multiple issues with stadium lights.

It's funny how video games today cost the exact same as they did throughout the 80's and 90's. It somehow has avoided inflation.

I'm just wondering how many fans will actually pay the high end prices for baseball jerseys when they look pretty much the same unless you know what to look for. I've bought the higher cost NFL jerseys because I hate the sublimated crap that Nike does for the lowest versions now, and I don't like that the men's sleeves are looser than the same level of shirt for women. The only good thing about the Browns old fan jerseys was that the stripes were higher up because they cross onto the front of the jerseys.

Careful what you wish for, folks...

Home: I like that it's black. That's about it. It looks like a photo that had a stock photoshop filter run on it. Also, the choice of bridge is odd since it's not the one that's visible from damn near everywhere in Highmark Stadium.

Rroad: I get the gray for the steel, but it'd be better if the stripes were black or black/white.

If they'd done that with the road jersey, and simply flipped it for the home, it'd be one of - if not the - best look they ever had. But this is almost "cartoon logo and default Microsoft Paint color palette shade of blue" era bad.

I like that home shirt, though I agree that they should use the bridge by the stadium instead. The away shirt is ok, but I'd probably either have the stripes on either the sleeves or the chest, not both.

It’s interesting to watch this play out in MLB compared to other leagues such as MLS. It doesn’t happen all the time, but generally, the vast majority of soccer shirts feature an advertisement that matches the kit’s color scheme. Take a look at the 2024 MLS designs.

    spacer.png

Maybe that’s in exchange for larger real estate, whereas in baseball, the ad is relegated to a smaller patch. Not that it’s justified, but I could see how the brand would want their logo in full color for maximum recognition since it’s rendered at a smaller scale.

A better comparison would be the sleeve logos. Even those for the most part match the colors of the uniform.

I remember reading somewhere that if the USFL had gone on this year separate from the XFL that they would have switched their uniforms over to Starter. Seeing something like this for the UFL teams would be great if they could still swing it. Especially since they're bringing in New Era and Bleeding T from the 2020 XFL and USFL contracts.

The nonprofit that stewards Boston's Emerald Necklace parks is suing the city over the plan to renovate the Franklin Park stadium for an NWSL team because they're mad the planning process is going too fast and because it would reduce the number of opportunities for schoolkids to play football there. I'm biased, wanting an NWSL team in this market, but I tend to think it's a good deal to get a decrepit public facility fixed up, NIMBY mucking-up is unreasonable to getting anything done, and that we shouldn't be encouraging kids to play contact football anyway. Strange bedfellows indeed, when the fundraiser-gala environmentalist set is suing the city's most progressive administration ostensibly in defense of black neighborhood kids (to get TBIs).

It's also so infuriating when groups like these wait until the last minute to start coming up with reasons why these projects need to be shelved. Trying to give the impression that people need to pick between two sports is jus a bad look.

I'll root for anyone to win MLS Cup this year except for the following clubs (I have my own reasons): Atlanta, Austin FC, LAFC, Inter Miami, NYCFC, and Seattle.

I can agree with this list as well.

Meh, I just feel like this is just more marketing talk. It's a white jersey, of course it will be easy to paint on, just like any white jersey (or really any jersey, let's be honest). And here's the ironic part: the pattern that is featured on the cuffs and side panels isn't even unique, it's actually been used previously on a Juventus pre-match shirt. Seems kind of hypocritical for a shirt that claims to promote creativity.

Especially when half the league designs are using the same templates for Bayern Munich.

  10. interesting! I wonder how many fans actually try doing something like this with these jerseys? If I was FCC I might see about exhibiting some of the designs somewhere in the stadium during the season.

I liked Orlando’s jersey. It’s gimmicky, but fake armor is a gimmick that works for me when you’re called the Valkyries.

It does always amuse me in volleyball when there’s one team in sleeveless jerseys and the other team in long sleeves. Can’t think of a single other sport that has that happen.

Soccer has this happen with players on the same team. Arsenal used to have a rule the captain decided if they wore long sleeves or short until players started wearing long sleeve undershirts when the captain chose short sleeves.

    - Says that ESPN is interested (which I doubt because he keeps poking the NFL bear and ESPN is an NFL TV partner)

    - Believes that the MLF will be around for decades.

    - 20 teams in non-NFL markets, some have dropped out due to stadium issues.  Working on stadium agreements right now.

    - 20 minutes, in he believes that his teams can beat NFL teams.

So the guy in very bottom right is 24 years old and a GM of one of the teams.  That's not a big deal since the General Manager of the Two Time USFL Champions Birmingham Stallions is also 24.

This may be the last one of these videos I post on here, unless you guys want more from this delusional man.

I'd leave him to his delusions, especially since we don't expect this league to get anywhere.

  13. I'm at the Brahmas meet and greet. I'll post notes later. Moose and Wade are in attendance.

    ABLVV873huDdOu0vSpC6a2Yi4QZ85Z3UzBX1xp5-

    From Moose:

    - Said that had the San Antonio AAF game gone off as planned, they were expecting 40,000 people for that game. That was a bit of a surprise that they expected it to be that big, but based on how the games had been trending, I would have expected at least 28,000.

    - When asked about fan interaction, he said that the advantage that the USFL had was that the teams were right there in the same town full time. With teams operating out of Arlington with the XFL/UFL, it will be harder to get the same level of interaction in the communities but that they want to get something more than what happened last year. Moose mentioned the kid's zones that the USFL had, and seeing if they can do something similar. San Antonio being so close to DFW makes it easier to do something in town outside of game days, but they would not guarantee that they can make it happen.

    - Wade came out taking shots at every team in the league and said he wants his players to love the city that they are playing in. Pretty much a lot of coach speak, including the raw raw, "San Antonio is much better than Houston" schtick.

-Moose said that the reason to go with XFL rules for extra points was that they felt USFL teams were playing it to safe with the extra point and just taking the kick. They wanted to get them to be more aggressive and so they tossed out the PAT. Also pointed out that going with two feet in bounds was due to wanting to prepare players for the NFL. He pointed out that the kickoff being from the 20 yard line probably helped Brandon Aubrey as much as his FG kicks did, because he was routinely hitting 5 yards inside the end zone from the 20. That ability is also why they went with the USFL kick over the XFL version.
