  1. All teams should become "expansion" teams upon moving.  You can still acknowledge the lineage without it being "official".

The records and history belong to the community.  The new team doesn't have to pretend that they were never the old one, but if the old one ever comes back, it should come back with everything it had.

If someone was in the building for some Seattle player scoring 80 points, and then some Seattle 2.0 player sets a "new" franchise record with 50, it's not like anyone is going to be celebrating or acknowledging that 50 is the team record, even if it technically is.

You move and change your name?  New team.  You move and keep the name?  Gray area - could go either way.

    Fight me.

Speaking of basic, I had on Strike Zone the other night and got upset again about how the Royals dropped that beautiful script for a generic block on their grays a couple years ago.

Two-word scripts don't work with a tail.  Neither Kansas City nor Los Angeles look better with their city in that format.  IMO both look better now.

Apparently he pulled a Jagr and manipulated the draft to make sure the Flyers took him. He was telling other teams in interviews that he wouldn't leave Russia if they drafted him, but told Philly a different story.

That's bizarre.  Philadelphia used to be one of the most desired places to play, but that's decades ago.  In the post-Snider era, there's no reason for a young kid to want to play here any more or less than anywhere else.  If that's true, I wonder why he'd do that.

According to this site, he's somehow allowed to use his father's death to get the ability to buy out his contract early.  The Flyers (Keith Jones and Danny Brier) claim they were surprised, but I doubt that's the case.

    From that link:

"According to a report from The Athletic’s Pierre Lebrun, Michkov is being granted his release “based on compassionate grounds” as the player’s father passed away a year ago. Interestingly enough, in the first report where the potential of Michkov coming over first began, SKA chairman Alexander Medvedev mentioned his father’s death as a reason why he could be heading overseas sooner than later, to not be reminded of him while playing in Russia and make the grieving process more difficult. Now, it looks like that played a major role into allowing Michkov to head off to the NHL."

    5 worse NHL uniform sets

The Buffalug (I actually kinda like these, the sword striping is cool - but they are worse)

    Pittsburgh Penguins first Edge set

Nashville Predators first Edge set (this one is bad)

    Edmonton Oilers first Edge set

    Florida Panthers first Edge set

Also the Edge set the Kings switched to is worse. Going back to older times I think the Bruins late 90s-early 2000s set is worse, although I kinda like those too.

I was just saying "bottom 5" because I genuinely hate them with a passion.  A more-accurate term would be "very-bottom tier", since it's impossible IMO to literally give numerical rankings to all but maybe the number 1 and absolute last.

Of those, which are all bad, I'd probably put only the Oilers below that era's Kings.  How they signed off on those is beyond me.  Basically practice jerseys with Bettman stripes.

The Penguins were inoffensive, just templated like most of the Edges.

Panthers were pretty terrible, considering the Bettman stripes in addition to the stupid wrap-around stripe that's overlapped by a vertical one.

Nashville's Edges were bad, but at least the colors weren't.  LA's were bad for myriad reasons, the color usage being one of them.  They weren't even confined to a template, and still chose a lousy logo, lousy color scheme, ridiculous collar (in the alt), hem wording, etc.

The 'Slug is at least just a bad logo, but not the worst sweater.  I mean... a bad logo, but the Kings checked the box in every category.  Every one of these (except the Oilers) has at least one redeeming quality.  While the Oilers have a fine logo, it's of a time, and doesn't fit in with a uniform that features the Bettman stripes and a modern-minimalist (to say the least!) looks.

Another crazy idea could be to just make an inverted yellow version of their black or white jerseys that are better than the City Connect anyway.

This would look great, and would work with either the script road look or the previous one (which I find superior to the script.)

One thing is for sure - their black alt with the "phantom" script is bad.  A yellow version with black script with white outline would be much better.

It's really a shame that the Pirates are the Pirates, because (other than the alt) they've had such great uniforms since PNC opened, and nobody gets to see them on a regular basis because they've been so irrelevant and haven't had a marketable player since McCutchen was MVP - and even then, he didn't get nearly as much press as most other MVPs.

this era of Kings jerseys is among the top 10 worst home/away NHL uniform sets of all time.

That's unpopular with me... but only because I think it's among the 5 worst uniform sets of all time.  Saying it's bottom 10 is giving it too much praise.

This is obviously the best uniform in Kings history...  Not necessarily advocating they go back to these colours, since most of their achievements happened in black & silver, but from a purely visual standpoint this one reigns supreme.  Bring it back as an alternate please!

That's along the lines of what I'm thinking (I didn't know it actually existed) but I'd have to see it with a yellow Chevy.  The white doesn't look great.

You're not turning down that money to risk tearing your achilles the next day.  In fact, while I don't know how long those negotiations had been going on for, once they started even approaching that amount, I'm probably wrapping myself in bubblewrap and not leaving the house until the deal is finalized.

In fact, if it was medically ethical, I'd ask to be put in an elective coma just to not risk anything.  Or maybe I'd get encased in carbonate or something.  These guys are all unbelievably rich, but there's a difference between Bryce Harper being "rich", and being able to call Harper a poor.

    EDIT:

The closest example I can think of is Scott Rolen with the Phillies.  They offered him a big (at the time) deal, and he said he'd sign only if they promised to put x$ into signing other players to improve the team.  They didn't, so he didn't sign, and they had to trade him.  But it wasn't no $450M.

  9. Of course, right as I say there’s no competition between Sheetz and Wawa, this article comes out.

    https://www.inquirer.com/news/wawa-sheetz-phoenixville-gas-stations-neighbors-20240622.html

That would easily be the first sheetz that’s firmly in Wawa territory. The others where they cross over are in Berks County (literally KKK territory, and not an area that most would consider part of Phila metro since it’s not one of the PA or NJ counties that make up the Delaware valley (despite what Taylor Swift and her dad claim), or Northeast PA, which also wouldn’t be part of Delaware valley.  I don’t think Wawa is part of the local fabric in any of those areas.

I don’t care about the Virginia, MD, or Florida stores, because similar to above, they’re  just “stores”, not part of the local fabric.

Does your TV allow you to patch in from one of those devices?

Turns out LGs native web browser can go to the Roku Channel site and after an agonizing sign-in process, let me watch. I already had an account but it was a chore.

But air-play, screen mirroring, etc. are blocked from the channel so it wasn’t as simple as it could have been. I think their app is native on Samsung and TCL TVs (some of which are branded as Roku TVs), or that’s what their documentation says at least.

EDIT: the TV web browser goes into screen-saver mode after inactivity, and it seems to not count live action as "activity", requiring a relaunch and at least 2 more clicks + waiting to get the game back on.  Was taking a dump and heard the game go off, and was like "oh sh t" (ironically, for two reasons.)

The ads just bounce all the posts and links up and down sporadically and I've learned that it's best to wait three or four minutes so the ads can do whatever they do, which is frustrating.

Let's face it - these ads are like a  paywall, and it's worth it to me to "subscribe".  I'd encourage everyone to think about how much time they spend here and what they get out of it, and decide if it's worth the $7.  For me it was a no-brainer.   I know not everyone can add another monthly subscription, or gets the same value from here that I do, so it's obviously a very personal decision.

The scenario you brought up is what put me over the top to get the ad-free version.  You'd go to click "reply", and an add would jump right in front of the button and next thing you know you're reading about an Acura or Chevy Tahoe or boat-cleaning formula.  You're right about having to wait at least a minute or two for the popcorn to stop popping so you're not clicking on them.  Ironically, I'd expect that while those clicks help the site, they  also hurt it since they probably drive people away.  I would assume the data shows otherwise, otherwise they wouldn't be there like that.

Roku app on phones and the website work to watch it. All you have to do is make a free account which is kinda annoying but takes like a minute. So yeah, it is pretty free. Similar to the Youtube games.

I'm not watching a 3hr game on a phone or tablet or laptop.

  13. So tomorrow starts the Roku-exclusive game, which of course, is the Phillies.  Not only is it at 11:30 am (which might actually be nice), but you need a goddam device to watch their channel, unless your TV supports their app (which my LG OLED does not.)

I've been messing around with my TV's browser to see if the channel is accessible on the web, which it seems to be, but I have a feeling it's going to be very annoying to watch.  It doesn't seem like screen mirroring from another supported device works.

It's one thing to have to subscribe to a streaming service just to watch the occasional game.  It's lousy, but doable.  But for them to market this as "free", but mostly only available if you buy one of their devices is crummy.

who knows if the Phillies will go with Wawa as a jersey sponsor, but between this and Schwarber being the face of Hoagiefest…there are signs

I don't know any more than you or anyone else here does, but I really can't see them going with a regional brand, and why a regional brand would want to pay what it would take (other than to keep their competitor from doing it first.)  With Sheetz and the Pirates, I can't imagine that companies were really fighting to out bid each other for that ad space.  Phillies ad space is far more valuable.  The most logical company that would pay for it would be Comcast, but they don't need to worry about Verizon or any competitor getting the space since the Phillies are business partners with them.  Also, I would expect that deal to already have happened.  IBX  maybe?  It certainly won't be a bank or a company like Vanguard due to the partnership with Citizens.  Maybe Campbells or Ritas Water Ice?  Seems like a financial stretch for either.

My guess is that if it's not Comcast or some Comcast-related brand (imagine an NBC Peacock on the sleeve), it'll be something completely out of left field that nobody sees coming.

I just wish they kept the sleeve numbers until the deal was made.

Trout should have left while he still could but he is stuck

Nobody turns down the money he was offered to stay.  Nobody.  It's not so much that he chose to remain irrelevant and anonymous, it's that he chose an ungodly sum of money that anyone in his shoes would have taken.  Unfortunately, his career is essentially over, so we'll never know if he could do anything when and where it mattered.

  16. The only way the Kings should do purple/yellow is if it's a straight recolor of what they just released.  They can't be trusted to use purple any other way.  The crown-jerseys are cool throwbacks, but that's it.  A purple/yellow Chevy uniform would be cool (IIRC, the original version of the Chevy logo was purple/yellow, just without the full outline.

Considering Sheetz has been taking the fight right into Wawa territory for a while now,

Is that true?  If so, I certainly haven't noticed it.  The two actually partner on some things.

Also, regarding the patch - the worst thing is that it's red, which makes the uniform look like a relic of the pre-PNC set with the dumb red-billed cap and red-trimmed stuff.  Didn't they have a red BP or alt or something?  I wish it was any other color besides red.

Also 2 - I don't think it'll be Wawa for the Phillies.  The Phillies will command one of the larger deals - probably the 3rd or 4th biggest one.  Wawa doesn't need it, and there's nobody that they compete with that would take it before they do.  Royal Farms isn't making a dent and isn't a threat for the patch, and Sheetz - even if they are competing, which I doubt, certainly isn't going to get it.  Also I don't think even Wawa could afford what it'll cost.

Also 3 - Sheetz > Wawa.  I'd cut off my own wang if I could get a Shmuffin, Shmiscuit, Shmagle, and a Shmonster right now.

That's actually what prompted the question, since there's multiple 1s and 2s.

Question for those that have followed NHL all year - were they viewed as contenders all year, or is making it to game 7 of the finals (or even making it to the finals) considered like one of those times when a low seed gets hot at the right time?

I'm definitely gonna try and watch game 7 - pulling for Canada to win its first since Eric Desjardins and John LeClair were on the Canadiens.
