2023 Winter Classic

The Pens and Bruins will Clash at Bostons' Fenway park. Check out my other thread in which I mocked up the rink for this game.  Today, both teams announced the logos they will wear during the game. I took these logos and mocked up what I think they should wear this winter.

Pittsburgh Penguins
The visitors rock cream color sweaters inspired by the Pittsburgh Pirates uniforms from the 20's. The team also revealed the logo on a cream background, which I took as a clue. The sleeve feature bold numbers, stripes and patches of the city's coat of arms large enough to be seen across the stadium.

Boston Bruins
The hosts wear an inverted version of their 1948 white uniforms, which inspired the wordmark on this years jersey. The "Spoked B" logo from that year is featured as a shoulder patch. Large stripes adorn the sleeves, but absent are any player numbers in line with the 48/49 uniforms.DhpkLsL.jpg

If this is what the Bruins bring out for the Winter Classic it is instantly going in my collection. I do wonder if they'll go black as the main color or if they'll go yellow or brown. This is the most excited I've been for a Winter Classic in awhile

Montreal Canadiens - Reverse Retro-ish

This concept stretches the reverse retro concept a bit and more into the City Connect/ City Edition territory. The Habs alternate draws inspiration from the flag of Montreal. The traditional stripe is bisected by a vertical stripe. I couldn't decide between a full cross and a subtler look. The fleur de lis, rose, shamrock, and thistle from the flag are finished in silver. The White pine from the center of the flag is located inside the collar.

Heritage Classic - Commonwealth Stadium

The "Battle of Alberta" appears to be hitting the pond next season. The Flames and Oilers will both wear province centered uniforms as they fight for provincial supremacy and braggin' rights. The color-on-color matchup will feature sweaters in Alberta's provincial colors of blue and gold.

Edmonton Alberta Oilers

The Oilers dig back into their past and bring out a recolored version of their inaugural, 1972 WHA "Alberta Oilers'", orange sweater. The blue and orange are swapped, Reverse Retro style. The "Oilers" wordmark is replaced with Alberta on the crest.

Atlanta Calgary Alberta Flames

The Flames also throw it back to 1972, their first season in Atlanta. The iconic Flames' "A" comes back, this time to represent "Alberta". The "A" is placed on a gold sweater, for the first time in Flame's history. The new uniform swaps white and gold from the team's first white uniform.

2025 Stadium Series
Detroit at Columbus

The Game inspired sets for the Blue Jackets and Red wings. I thought it would be a bit sacrilegious for the Jackets to wear Blue at Ohio Stadium so I've put them in red. Their uniforms are based on the Ohio State grey stripe uniforms, with black swapped for the Blue Jackets' navy. They will also wear silver helmets and britches to match the OSU football team.

The team from Michigan wear Wolverine-inspired unis. The helmet features the famous Michigan winged design, a perfect fit for the Redwings.

Both teams have shoulder TV numbers, just like football uniforms.

The matchup may be a bit too red-heavy, but again I didn't want the team from Columbus to wear Blue at the Shoe.

2025 Stadium Series v2
Detroit at Columbus

I thought my initial design was a little tame for a Stadium Series game and a little too red. So here is my second shot.

For both designs, I wanted to pull elements from the teams' logos, create strong shoulder stripes similar to football uniforms, football-like shoulder numbers, and pull in motifs from Michigan and Ohio State's football helmets.

Columbus' buckets are a metallic silver, just like they buckeyes. On the merit stickers, the buckeye leaves are replaced with stars. The team can decide how to give out merits based on each player's season up to that point, so each player has a different amount. The uniform is a a slight gradient from the team's blue to a darker navy. The shoulder stripes are high up on the arms, much like a football jersey, and are pulled from the Ohio flag in their logo. The arms and sleeves feature the star pattern from the flag as well, this is also a subtle nod to the merit sticker motif on OSU's helmets. The pants are a deep navy with the OSU pant stripe.

Detroit's uniforms start with a play on Michigan's Iconic winged helmet. The wings continue on the jersey with a subtle heat-pressed application that glints in the light. Their shoulder stripes are pulled from the top stripes of the team's logo. The set is finished with red pants and white stripes.

Much better than the first concept, the Blue Jackets are the home team and should play in blue, and having Detroit take to the ice in red would be worse. The subliminated details are great.

I think you can get away with having Stinger somewhere on the Jackets uniform , probably either the bucket or breezers, and I would love to see both teams with a red hem stripe, as it's such an important part of the look of the Red Wings, and the first Jackets jersey had a red hem stripe.
