Pistons’ Maroon Alts—Year?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a quick question: what year in the teal Horsehead era did the Pistons start using the maroon alternate unis?  I’ve seen ‘97-‘98 mentioned, but also other sources that say differently.  Trying to figure out what it actually was.  Thanks.

That site, although excellent, has a few timeframe-related errors (for example, they have the unis that immediately preceded the Rockets’ championship uniforms has having been worn for only two years, when in fact they were worn for four).  On most things, they are correct, especially on more recent changes, but I’m not totally willing to take their word on an older change like that.  I’d like verification.

Detroit's SBNation page has them listed from 97-2001. Also matching with what the mothership has.

The mothership has some errors of its own, unfortunately.

Looking at the Mitchell and Ness listings, the earliest maroon unis listed look like they're from '99-'00.  So maybe NBA Jersey Database was actually correct in this case.  Hard to say.  Wish someone who's a Pistons fan would chime in here with a specific recollection.

One other note: in that era, teams would usually wait until the third year or later of a new uniform set to release an alternate; I think there was some league mandate to that effect or something.  Given that, '97-'98 doesn't make sense, as the Pistons had just changed colors the prior season.  '98-'99 would have been the earliest an alternate would have materialized, if that mandate really did exist.
