'The Packers are exploring other ways to honor White at their wild-card playoff game this weekend. Next year, they plan to make him the fifth Packers player to have his jersey retired, joining Don Hutson, Tony Canadeo, Ray Nitschke and Bart Starr.'

All those great players over the years, and only 5 guys have had their jersey retired? What about 5 for Horning, or 31 for Taylor?

The NFL frowned on retiring numbers because some teams had problems finding enough numbers for receivers when receivers were limited to numbers in the 80's. Now that they've allowed receivers to wear numbers in the teens, I don't know if they've loosened this policy or not. While Hornung's #5 is not retired by the Packers officially, it might as well be. Don Majkowski wore #5 as a rookie for the Packers and the outrage was so great he had to change to #7.
