What they wear now isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I much prefer the originality of these numbers over plain block numbers any day. I think the gold against the dark blue shadow gives enough contrast for legibility. Adding a white outline to these numbers just didn't look very good to me. If I did do that, though, then I'd have to find a way to re-introduce white into the shoulder stripes. I have a few personal rules about shoulder and pant stripes that would have to be satisfied as welll. First, I like them to be pretty consistent with the numbers and logos on the uniform. Second, I always put the light color in the middle of the darker color, because I hate the look of a dark color framed by a light color, e.g. the current white shoulder stripes with gold in the middle. If I added white back into the shoulder stripes, they would be gold with the middle stripe white; the opposite of how they are on the current uniforms. I tried it all, and in my opinion, these definitely have the most seamless, cohesive, polished, and finished look. I'm glad most of you like them.

This version uses my visual approximations for UCLA's current colors. The gold is much brighter and more mustardy, the light blue is a little bit brighter, and the dark blue is the same, because I used this approximation in the original concept. These colors are based on the best hi-res game photos I could find in the most neutral lighting I could find. After my observations, I've concluded that the gold used for the pants and the numbers is different than the gold used on the helmet and jersey stripes. The gold in this concept is my visual approximation of the gold used on the helmet and jersey, which appears brighter and yellower than the gold used on the pants and numbers, in my opinion.

See below. This came out too dark when I saved it for the web.

This might be a little better, or a little worse. I can match it in CMYK, but not for the web. It's a little bit too yellow when it shows up on the web.

I spent the good part of last night working on Oregon. I even drew the number typeface by hand. I might get it done today.
