The Minnesota Thunderannounced today that its new women?s W-League franchise will benamed the Minnesota Lightning. The name was the overwhelmingfavorite in a five-week contest for fans to help the front officechoose the best name.?We had to listen to the fans,? said Djorn Buchholz, general managerof the Thunder & Lightning. ?There was a sense that MinnesotaLightning was the name we wanted to go with, but the votes from thefans confirmed that it was the right way to go.?The Thunder received over 500 emails contributing to the namingcontest with nearly 70% of those entries listing MinnesotaLightning. With the large response the front office will berandomly selecting 15 entries to receive season tickets for theupcoming 2006 season.The logo of the Minnesota Lightning is consistent with that of theThunder, using the same color schemes and shading. There will beboth a two color version, as displayed currently on the Thunderwebsite at www.mnthunder.com, and also a metallic version tomatch that of the Thunder.After a successful round of tryouts in December, Lightning headcoach Danny Storlien has narrowed his list of potential players to24. Storlien will be making contact with these players this weekand hopes to have several players signed within the next two weeks.Most of the team will be made up of primarily Minnesota grownplayers with some of the best players to have ever come out of thestate.The Lightning will have its home opener on Saturday, May 27 at theNational Sports Center at 5:05 p.m. This match will be held as adouble header with the Thunder.Minnesota Lightning season tickets are now on sale and can bepurchased for as low as $21.
