next Tuesday back to doctors to get looked at; trying to schedule surgery, depends on swelling.

making progress .... in small ways ... was able to sit up today.... can see a little... was able to open his left eye (just barely), but did open it.

Glad to see he's improving, but I'm sure he could still use our thoughts and/or prayers. He's got mine.

Has anyone mentioned that this is the second time this type of thing has happened to Juan? Last week of the season in either 1999 or 2000, when he was with Detroit, Juan was hit in the eye with a pitch, breaking his orbital bone then, too. It was the most sickening sound I've ever heard at a ballgame.

I remember Juan Encarnacion once hit a ball into the bleachers in left field at Yankee Stadium. That was the only time I've ever seen it happen.

Very sad to hear about this. I really hope that baseball takes it very seriously and starts making strides to protect people from batted balls. Coaches, players, and fans. This kind of thing should never happen. It's senseless.

Looks like things are not improving here, as Encarnacion may be legally blind in his left eye at 20/400.

Jeez. I really feel for Encarnacion. I feel terrible for him. This just goes to show that anyone is prone to any severe injury while playing sports or attending a sporting event. 20/400 is what I have in my left eye. Doesn't get any worse than that. By the way, the term "legally blind" does not mean that you are completely blind in an eye or eyes. I know this because I have a little perifferal vision in my left eye and I can distinguish colors from a very close distance (probably about up to nine or ten feet.) I hope Encarnacion can regain some more vision and not have this affect his life so drastically and way less important than that, maybe somehow resume his career. If this were just his eye that we were talking about, Encarnacion would definitely be able to play again. However, the multiple fractures to his eye socket are something that I do not know much about, and that would prevent him from coming back (conceivably? Because I don't know) along with the concussion, depending on the severity of it.

I hope Encarnacion's life doesn't change too much from this.

I looked it up apparently legally blind is 20/200. Of course in his right eye, Juan Encarnacion can see just fine, but I can't imagine he could play with just one healthy eye.

If Bryan Berard can do it, why can't Juan?

Bryan Berard is not trying to hit a moving hard ball. Sure hockey is tough in its own right its easier to see and deflect a puck away they hit a 90 MPH fastball.

Conceivably he could, and I say that on the basis that I play baseball. The only thing that would prevent him from coming back in my opinion is the fractures around his eye, the severity of the concussion, and the fact that he will have to adapt to such a drastic change in eyesight.
