This might simply be local hopeful thinking, but the Phillies just called up their #6 prospect, and the word on the street is that the Padres covet him, and since they're in town this weekend, the Phillies are showcasing him to be a part of a potential Juan Soto deal.

Given the Phillies salary situation, I think it's highly unlikely - if not impossible - for this to happen (why would the Padres trade Soto so soon - didn't they extend him?) but it's kind of surprising that they'd call this one particular guy up, when there's other options that probably make more sense right now.

Maybe the plane-ride thing didn't mean anything and is perfectly normal for after an ASG... or maybe it did mean something.  Guess we'll find out.

But again - why would SD trade him?

Soto has not been extended.  He's a FA after 2024.

Which is why a deal has possibilities.  The Padres are going to have to go fire sale with all the money they have tied up and the sudden caving in of their television rights deal since MLB had to take over from Bally.  I don't see where they're going to find more cash to keep signing the insane deals that they have the last few years.

  2. What I find hilarious is that the only real competition he's ever had in Kobayashi pulled out due to a contract dispute with Major League Eating, an organization that really has no excuse to even be a thing.

Surely, after decades of this, and ESPN continuing to highlight it, that someone would have figured out how to challenge him.  How hasn't some YouTube/TikTok person not dedicated themselves to taking down the mighty Chestnut?

This is getting to 80s Hulk Hogan level of predictability.

  3. Let's take a live look at Bristol, CT today:

Looks like the guillotine fell on at the very least:

    Steve Young

    Suzy Kolber

    Jeff Van Gundy

    Jalen Rose

    Keyshawn Johnson

    Todd McShay

    Matt Hasselbeck

    Ashley Brewer

    Max Kellerman

    LaPhonso Ellis

    Joon Lee

And this isn't including the nontenders of Chris Chelios, Rob Ninkovich, and Neil Everett.

The only change the Ducks needed to make in 2006 was the removal of the word "Mighty" from their name...  Everything else should have stayed exactly the same.  Imagine if the cup had been lifted in this jersey*...

They need to figure out the color issue with the crest.  The eggplant jersey only has a black-gray-yellow-white logo and the white jersey only has a black-jade-yellow-white-gray (just as shadowing) logo.  It never sat right with me that the crest was completely devoid of either one or two of the team's primary colors.

  5. A cycle is a fluke thing that can be entirely gamed.  Only have a single left? As long as your manager’s behind the decision you can coast into first without trying to stretch out a double. Need the triple?  Blow through a stop sign and take your chances.

Honestly a new owner who steps in is the only scenario where the A’s stay in Oakland at this point. But unlike when the Giants had one foot out the door 30 years ago to Florida, the A’s aren’t for sale. And after 20 years of ownership and having no new stadium in Oakland Manfred seems more than happy to help out his buddy Fisher.

Is a new owner really going to have any more luck cutting through the red tape? Oakland’s not innocent in this ordeal so even if there was a fast sale the team would still be stuck in a rodent-infested cesspool for at least another 5-6 years which is completely asinine unless the new owner comes in and blows millions of dollars on temporary bandaids.
