  1. When talking just about "simple" looks, Utah still did the Brooklyn better than the Nets. Yes, the Nets have additionally a (basic 🥱) trim, but Jazz' typography – the wordmark and the numbers – is actually rather crisp and well-designed, and the logo is still way better than what the Nets have. And black and yellow is still more interesting than black and white.

You can see it a little in the  pictures but the court/graphics are done in the same style as last years alt. Picture's worth a thousand words.

It might not be the first time. I recall them already using this type of court these previous years in summer league.

You're sort of making the point, though.

I presume you're not a Wolves fan, so you haven't had to endure nearly two decades of (mostly) futility.  So, using this analogy, the Wolves ,to you, are just any amusement park. You have no local attachment to it, so you can look at this trade, like most sports fans with no skin in it, as an armchair GM and assess winners and losers. That's fair, and it's part of the game. I just find it unproductive.

As a Wolves fan, I just see a team taking a big swing. I don't give a damn what they gave up. They're just ensuring me that i'm likely to enjoy this next season more than I enjoyed the last one. Those future picks are just faceless commodities. And if it turns out to be a mistake, big deal. I'm used to them losing. At least we're having enjoying the moment.

Another point on this: Not all trades among all markets can be judged equally. Some teams, like the Wolves, aren't going to land any big-name free agents. It's just not going to happen, whether it be the quality of the squad or the location of the team. So they have to give away more to get players of a certain caliber. It's an unfortunate quirk of NBA economics you don't hear as much about in other sports. Location matters, and L.A. and South Beach sound a helluva lot more appealing to a 20-something athlete in the winter than the Twin Cities.

I'm assessing the Wolves' situation from the point of view of a fan of another similarly "non-desired destination" franchise – the Cavs – that I've been supporting for already 20 years soon. And if that swing won't work, I'm not content with having to settle for keeping on losing and be handicapped for the foreseeable future. I want to see my team have the opportunities to bounce back and put themselves in the best position as soon as possible from there on. Let alone that the draft is an intriguing part of all the fun in its own right that is no less exciting to be engaged in.

Another thing is, was Gobert's desire to play for the Wolves a deciding factor in case of this particular trade? Otherwise I don't see how the destination would affect the given up value for him.

  4. Boston has made all the right moves in adding serious pieces to form a championship squad.

The Gobert trade for Minny is brutal. The amount they gave away for him picks included, and the fact that it's Rudy Gobert, he's not worth nearly that much.

What comes to the amusement park comparison, I don't see it that way, since, as a fan, you're emotionally invested in one franchise and want to see it have the best opportunities to succeed going forward too. You could go to any amusement park and enjoy it as much or even more than your local one, and not have any attachment to it in principle.

But when they all use different secondary colors I don’t see the issue. Heck the lakers primary color is gold not purple, and charlottes primary is teal.

But when they play in their away unis that are mainly purple, they are mainly purple teams. Lakers are as much purple as they are yellow to me.  Charlotte wasn't the first on the list, though.

San Antonio's ceiling was/is play-in fodder. It's possible that with the way Murray jumped up this year, they figured it's better to trade him while his stock is high than give him a big contract that they maybe don't feel great about. Murray's a good player but it's not like he's Dwyane Wade or anything.

    1 hour ago, MJWalker45 said:

It's the same issue as Kawai. Without a big like LaMarcus Aldridge to put pressure up top, he'll get his points but the team won't win games. Gallinari might even get waived by the Spurs, since it drops the cap hit by $18 million.

But the plan should be to acquire such a big through the draft or trades, and build the team by adding those pieces. He might not be D-Wade, but he's just the type of player they needed to build around with who does everything, just like the Cavs do with Garland, and compete from there.  The Cavs were not going to be playing for the title right off the jump. The 6th-8th seed is a logical next step for them. Taking a step back wasn't really what I was expecting of the Spurs at this stage and in Pop's career.

EDIT: That being said, Murray isn't the best of fits in the backcourt for Atlanta alongside Trey at all. We'll see how it works.

The NBA has a lot of red teams (4 red-black teams), and a lot of blue teams, but only 3 red/white/blue teams. One more purple team along with the Lakers, Suns and Kings (maybe Toronto down the line) isn't going to hurt anyone.

Potentially five purple teams is too many to me for such an eccentric color, as with any other color scheme, really.

In what's the weirdest thing I've seen in a long time, we were super close two have three black/white/gray teams in the NBA, but yet we have a grand total of 1 navy and red team (Washington) (Denver and New Orleans doesn't count, since they use yellow/gold too)

But do we really need another red-white-navy team? That color scheme with whatever variant of blue happens to be the most common in American sports. There were several teams with that color scheme in the NBA in the '00-'10s, and at one point during that period literally about half the league was red.

  9. It appears they moved him because he wasn't about to extend his contract this year nor the next, as he would command bigger offers as a free agent. I guess the Spurs got a good return for him in this case, but why wouldn't they pay him the money themselves? Dejounte is exactly the piece they should build around in their situation. Who are they so tied to with their money on their roster?

    Primary color: Finals-era purple

    Secondary color:  Flag blue

    Tertiary color: Flag yellow

Do that, and they’d have a unique color scheme that’s tied to their history and city. Instead, we got black and highlighter yellow.

Even though to me the Utah Jazz is all Stockton-Malone purple mountains, I'll be all for it if they went straight up to this color scheme with the same color distribution. That good it was:

EDIT: Now that I think of it, Pelicans should've just stayed with it. The colors they switched to are very drab.

As a side note, there really are too many purple teams indeed.

Cleveland has enough in their history that a simple uniform can work with them. They also had the brilliant ideas like "normal basketball uniform trim patterns" and "correct colors". Doesn't really seem comparable.

What they switched from made this very lackluster uniform in a vacuum too so much more disastrous. The "colors" is arguable, they looked better to me priorly with metallic gold and do so much better now and stand out from the other teams to their advantage with it back.

  12. What about the Spurs having Dejounte Murray in trade discussions? How does that make sense? Why would you shop a young all-star triple-double machine franchise-cornerstone playmaker when you're a young up and coming team trying to build something and heading in the right direction? Can't see how a John Collins would be better for them.

I've always liked the Nets rebrand. The black/white and the simplicity just fits for them, probably because I viewed the rebrand as a stale boring franchise reinventing itself by moving to a cool new arena in an interesting location with a fresh identity that wanted to look timeless rather than flashy like what was the trend at the time.

But timeless and classy, and unprofessionally lackluster are different things, though.

The Cavs still hold that title by a margin. What they switched from in favor of this makes it way more egregious than the Jazz.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, the Heat look very good, and them going toned down is the right move. I’m more just surprised that we never got something along the lines of the Magic sublimated stars but with flames or something instead. The Magic sort of lost their identity when they ditched the stars, and I sort of feel like it was an attempt to “button things up”, sort of like the Heat operate. Problem is, “Heat culture” is led by Pat Riley and has Miami to fall back on, so the whole “Buttoned up” approach works well for them. The Magic basically play in Florida’s version of Sacramento, so them toning it down just emphasizes how bland their surroundings are.

Also, the Heat basically had this identity along with the wordmark from the get-go, only with some minor tweaks. They are also not the "Magic", though, that implies "fantasy".

Actually, I don't feel the Heat's identity is stripped-down any, they have a streaking ball in flames as a logo, after all. It's all just an example of being designed in such a solid way that there's nothing more to add or to remove, and would work as well anywhere.

The Heat did have a "flame" gradient in their logo at first, though.

The Heat and Magic sort of have a similar issue in that they both went with that singular style, somewhat modern nickname, but both have relatively toned down, almost traditional looking sets. They aren’t bad in a vacuum, but they both feel somewhat disjointed by that imo. Like, there’s a disconnect between the name and the visual identity.

The thing is that the Magic used to have an identity and uniforms that matched their brand in "playfulness" and were totally appropriate in their effort, but then at one point around the beginning of Dwight's career they decided to tone it down for some reason and went further replacing the decent wordmark in the logo with the one on the jerseys that was rather plain.

While I don't think the Heat suffer from the issue you mentioned, I totally share your sentiments of the Magic doing so.

  16. Is no one gonna talk about how there hardly were any current player trades and none involving any big names during the draft? What was that all about?? First time I see it go that way after annual excitement... Considering there's as much trade rumors floating as always this time in the offseason too.

Aside from those two wordmarks not working visually together, that "Miami" that was used on the City jerseys too just isn't as impeccably solid design-wise and on the same level as the (current) Heat wordmark, and would get tired quickly. The black hoop commands too much attention away from the ball, hence white works better there.

What comes to magenta alongside orange, I'm not really a fan of that color combination that the Floridians used to have, the hues are too close to each other. Don't see it necessary for the current Heat.

Not sure why Utah included the silver-ish grey in their rebrand. It's hard to distinguish when it's used and can be replaced by yellow, black, or white just fine. Seems pretty unnecessary, but that's just a reflection of the rebrand as a whole

Exactly, and it would look much better with black stripes on yellow and yellow on black and white.

It might be a similar kind of "chrome" thing they put on the court, but comes across only as a gimmick that doesn't do much visually on the unis.

  19. One thing that softens the blow for me in Jazz' case is that the identity they used to have starting from the logo and ending with the color palette was one of, if not the most boring, uninteresting and uninspired in the league. Only the Thunder have another clear case here. So, not that I will miss any of that. Not a fan of the Mardi Gras-like NOLA colorway in any form.

I had the same thought, but the Wizards/Bullets seem like one of those rare examples of a team with a fairly limited visual history. And presuming they don't want to use the term Bullets, even as a retro, then this original Wizards look is the only one they can call back to with any degree of historical accuracy.

And even if they were OK using the Bullets name, there aren't a ton of options in their history outside of the iconic red-white-blue striped sets that inspired the current modernized look. There's a simple orange/navy look from the late '60s, and the overly simple post-pinstripe uniforms of the early '90s. That's about it

    spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

I can't recall, have they ever gone way back and done a retro as the Chicago Zephyrs? (Wizards jersey timeline.)

I may be misremembering, but I think it’s the 25th anniversary of the name change this coming season, so I think(?) it’s in honor of that. I totally get your point, but if that’s thier reasoning, then I’m cool with it.

Well, yeah, the options are limited. Actually, I'm pleased to see them wear it, but it would be more interesting if they used the earlier and the initial version of the uniform with bronze color in place of gold, the one MJ played in. Or maybe they will?
