  1. Inspirations:

    • eggshell helmet, tied into a new egg vendor at the stadium; ownership hoping if players crack their heads open it will drive omelet sales up
    • red speckled road whites, inspired by blood spatter formations, potential promotional tie in with Dexter reboot?
    • novel light shade of orange, representing iodine wash put on Carson Palmer’s knee before one of his many surgeries
    • a bold gradient blend of gold and maroon, called Friendly Fire, a touching tribute to Pat Tillman
    • a league first - gray turf, an homage to the many generations of fans who have died, never having seen the team win a Super Bowl

You’d never guess what the Orange will be called…I had to look it up in the dictionary to figure out what it is

My guesses based on actual shades of orange:

    • fulvous
    • gamboge
    • xanthous

My guesses based on goofy southwestern words that they could pull out of their ass:

    • sonoran (desert)
    • sedona (city)
    • creosote (brush plant)
    • chiracahua (national monument)
    • rhyolite (rock type)
    • pedregosa (former ancient sea near the area)
    • agate (a quartz-y, colorful rock formation)

  3. The NO/PIT  broadcast had to have been sweetening the mix with fake crowd noise.  There were like a dozen people in attendance, maybe.  The Panthers/Gamblers game had virtually no attendance as well, but they had a more natural sounding crowd (for the like fifteen people that came by to watch).

This can't be sustained.  The XFL is not only better in terms of quality of play, rules, etc., but the legit interest from several fanbases creates national buy-in.  The USFL is playing in front of covid-era crowds, jerking their fans around with the pointless city names.

  4. Sea Dragons v. Battlehawks:  Hell of a showing for the Sea Dragons.  DiNucci has a lot of guts, and I enjoyed him laying his shoulder into a defender on his designed touchdown run.  Seattle's gotta get into the playoffs, man.  They're one of the funnest teams in this tiny league.

Defenders v. Renegades:  The alternating pick-sixes by Men With Glorious Dreads was a highlight.  Joe Powell's incredible mane blessed the DC fans in attendance, even if it was called back (somewhat unfairly, IMO).  De'veon Smith impressed, as did the quantity of shirtless Defender fans in the crowd.  The "IF YA SMEEEELLLLL WHAT THE XFL IS COOKIN'!" call was just terrible.

Guardians v. Brahmas:  Another Guardians game, another game where Dormady gets planted into the turf every other snap.  Two bad teams put together some game tape with nothing to play for, and it was entertaining.  The fake punt was fantastic, good close contest.

Vipers v. Roughnecks:  The Roughnecks uniforms are so, so awful.  Threw a ton of bad design ideas into a blender and signed off on the tragic output.  Gradient numbers, split helmet, flag helmet, helmet numbers, shoulder yokes, unconventional font, etc.  Gross.  There was a game played, sure, but nothing impressed.  Mutual incompetence was exploited by both defenses.

Somebody coordinated this with the wrong team and they couldn't get the arrangements undone, so they said to hell with it.  Or the Pirates told them to go to hell, which is also plausible.

    • Sea Dragons vs. DC Defenders:  Oh man, what a game.  Defense wasn't much of a factor, but there were some exciting fumbles and a tipped pick to keep it spicy.  Crowd was loud, back and forth between two very good teams, broadcast was sharp.  Shame Seattle couldn't convert at the end, but still, damn fun game.
    • Brahmas vs. Roughnecks:  Poor Jack Coan.  Guy got the absolute religion beaten out of him, made some bad plays, and probably had one of those moments after the game in the locker room where he pondered many of his life choices that led him to this place.
    • Vipers vs. Battlehawks:  Tiano with a gutsy game for St. Louis, and the Vipers, to their credit, played very well until overtime.  Their own coach screwed his defense over with the sideline penalty, lol.  Battlehawks remain fun.
    • Guardians vs. Renegades:  Orlando sucks.  Arlington also is mostly garbage.  Guardians going for one at the end earned boos from the, like, 40 people who showed up to support them.  Even when they get the ball back, Dormady can't do anything with it.  What a disaster.

Big games next week.  Sea Dragons/Battlehawks should be awesome.

  6. Kyle Long similarly dropped a ton of weight after getting out of football.  Keeping on a ridiculous pile of bulk requires a ton of work and an obscene diet.  It's gotta feel so liberating to graduate away from maintaining a 40,000 calorie-a-day lifestyle just so other 300+lb guys can hit you 6 days a week.

You guys are just too good at guessing my intentions.

Here is design option #2 of 3.   Based on the Memphis Southmen of the 1970's World Football League, but with influences from several other Bear (particularly bear head) logos,  including the Memphis Grizzlies NBA, U. of Montana, and about 4-6 others.    Those of you who remember my WFL redux will likely see the elements from that project in this one.

Tomorrow I will reveal the 3rd and final identity option, which comes to us from a relatively recent design.  The actual voting on the USFL Lives website will also start probably over the weekend or Mon/Tue at the latest.

Looks like a turkey is crawling up the ass of the bear.

    • Battlehawks/Roughnecks:  Houston just can't get out of its own way.  I remember being intrigued by Cole MacDonald out of college but yikes, he looks pretty lost out there.  Battlehawks handle their business.
    • Guardians/Defenders:  Easily the best game the Guardians have had all season.  Dormady looks like their guy going forward.  Some of those catches/throws were extremely impressive.  Defenders have nothing to hang their heads about (except for how their defense played).  GG, WP.
    • Sea Dragons/Renegades:  Arlington getting booed at home was pretty fun.  Seattle is so damned entertaining.  The corner end zone throw from DeNucci to Gordon was just bonkers.
    • Vipers/Brahmas:  The Rod Smith hurdle is a signature highlight of the XFL season, what a move.  First kick return touchdown in this iteration of the XFL goes to the Vipers.  Vegas played damn good football, it's just a shame it takes place in the most embarrassing broadcast conditions imaginable for a league trying to make a good impression.

I've had this idea kicking around in my head for a while. I'm also surprised they haven't tried it at some point in the last 40 years since moving to the desert. I had a color in mind as something they could own, like their version of the Bucs' pewter:

Why was 0 not allowed in the first place? Seems like a silly rule.

Probably some legacy automated computer system that would fudge the entire league's tax paperwork or something.

I'm really curious as to what might make a player choose one league over the other.

Looking over the USFL rosters, particularly the QB position, I can see a few holdovers from last year (Case Cookus in Philly, Kyle Lauletta jumping from Pittsburgh to NJ, De'Andre Johnson with NJ). And I also see some notable names from last season that jumped to the XFL, especially Jordan Ta'amu (XFL2020 STL to USFL Tampa to XFL 2023 DC) and Luis Perez (XFL2020 NY to USFL NJ to XFL2023 Vegas).

Anyone have any idea what might prompt so many jumps from league to league?

I mean, I understand why an XFL 2020 QB like Ta'amu or Perez would jump to the USFL last year; it was the only alternative. But I wonder what prompts them to then ditch the USFL for the XFL this year?

Opportunity to start, benefits, and pay.  I have no idea which league would be better.
