  1. The Kings Insider piece suggests it was the teams. There's a quote from Rob Blake about railing against 3 games in 3 days on weekends, because, oh, the development-stifling humanity!

Now, the stupidity of having 5 teams in the division play 68, and 2 others play 76, when the league had six 5-team divisions just last season? That one's probably on the league.

    SamuelJacksonStare.gif

OK, here's the thing. Minor League hockey teams tend to lead a very precarious existence with a dependence on gate money that greatly exceeds the NHL. Weekend games do a heck of a lot better at the gate than week day games. So yeah, minor league teams do 3 in 3s all the time. That this has suddenly become an insurmountable burden is just another sign that the NHL's Western teams have no bloody clue how to run a minor league organization and should not be listened to in this case.

  2. Independence is DEAD! Long live Independence:

Yes, NJIT has found a home in the Atlantic Sun. Our long Independence in Basketball nightmare is over.

I'm happy they found a conference...but were the NEC's expectations too lofty for them?

That's not the case... this is easily a marriage of convenience. NJIT needed a home and the Atlantic Sun were a raid or two away from death. This works out big time for both parties.

Well, you can forget about any good rivalries forming now...the NEC would've been CHOCK-full of them.

Here's hoping this move is only temporary and NJIT goes to where it belongs.

Actually, Burmy, the NEC probably wouldn't want them because NJIT doesn't play football.

To be honest, based on their status as a public school without football, their most compatible home would likely be the America East Conference.

  3. Suspension/termination would be death for franchise values. It's not an option.

Nah. It'd kill the NHL in the Phoenix market, but it wouldn't impact franchise values overall by any stretch.

I think any Phoenix-area related option is a band-aid on a massive open wound. And not a good band-aid. One of those ones that you can't open the package without ripping the band-aid. And then it barely sticks to you. And then you have to go to the store to get a proper band-aid, but you're dripping blood all over the place and people are staring at you...

Yeah, I agree. Why Glendale made the deal they did stupefies me, and I can't say I blame them for killing it the first chance they had. How this plays out who knows, but the best thing for everyone involved would be for the team to head north.

Contraction/suspension also takes away playing opportunities for the union. There are available markets-it would be inconvenient as hell, but Portland and Quebec could take the team on minimal notice. Shut the team down, and the union flips out.

  4. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

    http://www.tsn.ca/glendale-contemplates-arena-plans-without-coyotes-1.305719

The city of Glendale will contact venue management companies in coming days to start booking dates at Gila River Arena for this fall and winter, according to Glendale's vice mayor.

Glendale Vice Mayor Ian Hugh told TSN the Coyotes were also tenants in the city-owned arena under terms of that agreement. Hugh said now that council has cancelled the arena management deal, the Coyotes are without a place to play their home games.

I, um, don't think the NHL schedule is going to be ready to go in two weeks.

  5. To address the specter of a new arena shared by the Coyotes and the Suns, I'm going to raise one question BTW:

Is it actually in the Suns' (or ASU's, if they get involved) financial interest to bring in the Coyotes? Assuming they're running the arena, they might be leaving money on the table by having a hockey team chew up 40+ nights that could be used for more lucrative concerts and other events. I mean, the Kansas City and Houston experiences might be relevant here.

  6. I heard about this in the local news.. I personally think that Portland is the best option because they have a hockey ready arena (The Moda Center, which this team might have to share with the Winterhawks... but only part of the time since they split their home games between there and the Memorial Coliseum)

The Quebec arena's slated to open in September.

That won't happen because of the unbalanced conferences (besides, the Panthers are sitting and waiting for that arena to be done so they can move there in time for the 2016-17 season). Look for them to maybe (and that's a very big maybe with this vote coming up) play another year there then relocate to Las Vegas. If Vegas has a temporary place for them to play until this new one is done, then it might be another Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg situation. Actually the legal analyst on TSN made a very good observation. About 3 weeks before the Thrashers announced they were moving to Winnipeg, Bettman was commenting on reports about a possible Thrashers relocation and was adament that it was not happening. 3 weeks later, the Thrashers headed north. So if this vote goes against the Coyotes, expect to see many comments from Bettman saying there will be hockey in the desert next season following by an announcement of a relocation which will all be done in time for the draft.

Columbus or Detroit (or better yet, both!) are going to have to come to grips with certain inconveniences about the league's overall geography. It won't be too bad for Detroit's fans-the post-Detroit diaspora means much of the fanbase lives in the Western Conference footprint now.

Looks like the NHL expects Glendale to just bend over and ask for another...

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=770457&navid=nhl:topheads

Hopefully Glendale surprises them. Yotes fans are of course in full on blame Glendale mode. Nevermind this lease deal has been a disaster for Glendale.

I wonder if the last round of municipal bond offerings went catastrophically or something.

  7. I heard about this in the local news.. I personally think that Portland is the best option because they have a hockey ready arena (The Moda Center, which this team might have to share with the Winterhawks... but only part of the time since they split their home games between there and the Memorial Coliseum)

  8. The Coyotes are pissed. Seeing them play five seasons in front of no one while this navigates untold levels of legal hell would be the most just scenario for all parties involved.

    http://coyotes.nhl.com/club/m_news.htm?id=770386

“This is a blatant attempt to renege on a valid contract that was negotiated fairly and in good faith and in compliance with all laws and procedures. In the event the City Council initiates any action to revoke, repeal or otherwise rescind the agreement, the Coyotes will immediately take all actions available to them under the law against the City of Glendale.”

I'd say I haven't laughed this hard since the last time I saw Bruce Rauner use the phrase "good faith" but that's not really meaningful since I think that was earlier today. Still, while the Coyotes negotiations may have met the legal definition of good faith, it certainly never would have met any practical definition.

  9. Has anyone ever asked why the original name of the site was "Chris Creamer's SportsLogos.Net" and not just "SportsLogos.Net"?

Was Chris just trying to make a name for himself on the internet when he created the site? Or was he just trying to separate his site from any other sports logos sites that may have existed back then? (I doubt this very much though because I'm sure there weren't ANY other sports logos websites at the time. I mean, even after the success of SportsLogos.Net there STILL aren't any competing sites with a similar theme. I mean, there's Uni-Watch, but that's a blog about sports uniforms, not a logo database.)

I laud your efforts to rebrand the site as just "SportsLogos.Net" without the Chris Creamer name in front because most people would ask "Who the heck is Chris Creamer?" when reading the name. I have always thought of the creator's name being a part of the name of the site as really amateurish and unprofessional so I'm glad it's being used somewhat less. (Although it glaringly still appears in website headings and in the forum logo.) I mean, a website that can be viewed by millions of people internationally isn't the local pub downtown, so the owner's name out front, especially when that owner isn't famous, makes the whole venture seem really smalltime.

So let me just ask the question that is on everyone's mind reading this: Chris... are you an egomaniac?

No, he is just simply advancing the interests of the white male cisgendered patriarchy.

  10. As for Quebec City or Southern Ontario: "Nope. Both of those cities make the balanced conference problem worse," said the NHL team owner, who declined to speak publicly for fear of being fined by the league. "I think it leaves us with Las Vegas as our best alternative. I could see them moving the Coyotes there when the new arena is done."

Then tell Detroit or Columbus to get :censored: ing bent and return to the Western Conference.

  11. And THIS is why I believe that the NCAA's transition rules should be reformed...take away the one-year ban for programs moving from FCS to FBS, and cut the D-II to D-I ban to 2 years.

Seriously, people are gonna see this and think these schools moving up did something wrong.

Umm...Burmy, the waiting period isn't a bad idea. There are a couple of HBCUs in fairly recent memory that thought they could hack the jump, but it turns out they couldn't. One of those is closed completely. There are other tirefires also lurking around the bottom reaches of Division I that probably should not have made the move, but did anyway. I don't think jumps should be made any easier than they already are.

  12. Oh, please share this story.

    http://www.pjstar.com/article/20130427/NEWS/304279971/0/SEARCH

I slightly misremembered. They looted the training equipment and a 50-inch TV from the locker room that the booster club bought for the team. The Blues did try to grab the lockers that had been installed in the last Civic Center renovation, at which point the Blues got the locks changed on them.

The SPHL Rivs have had to make do with the equipment from the old ECHL Trenton team, which they were able to snap up when it folded.

  13. The good thing about going with that doofy Polar Bears choice is that if this doesn't work or a better location becomes available (I still think the best thing to do is to sell the team and affiliate with the Wolves, O'Hare being one of the only U.S. airports that flies direct to Winnipeg; maybe if the Blues find some couch change they can buy the team and put it in Peoria or Chucktown), that way you're not getting rid of the Manitoba Moose a second time. I have doubts about Winnipeg supporting two pro hockey teams.

The Blues would never be welcomed back into Peoria by the fans.

    Ehhh....AAA hockey is AAA hockey.

Fans wouldn't be the issue. The Civic Center may be after the whole "ripped out everything that was nailed down in the locker room and paid for by the Civic Center when you grabbed the team" bit.

  14. Howie Rose is pissed off about the Islanders' Nassau demise:

    http://nypost.com/2015/04/24/howie-rose-angry-pissed-off-over-islanders-leaving-coliseum/

I feel the same way that he does. Leaving the Coliseum was inevitable; it's a dump. But it's sad and aggravating that Long Island will no longer be a major league town once the Islanders are done in the playoffs.

Are we seriously pretending Long Island is a town rather than a giant suburb?

  15. {don't use internet explorer}

that's not a helpful answer. Are there any adults capable of explaining the issue ? this shouldn't be that difficult. I should be able to use what ever I want and this site should adapt for ease of use accordingly.

Anyone with a more adult and helpful answer ?

Why should the site adapt to accommodate virus-riddled buggy browsers? Especially when you can get better browsers for the cheap price of free.
