Because of what Robinson did, I have no problem with his number being retired. However, retiring Gretzky's number was plain stupidity. Even if you think he's the greatest (which I do not), you have to admit that he was not the greatest by a long shot. If he gets his number retired, then Lemieux and Orr do, too. And then people will make a case for Richard and Howe. And Hasek and Roy. And... Now I'm not saying that those above numbers should be retired league-wide, but it is a slippery slope. If player X deserves his number being retired by the league, then player Y does too, and maybe even player Z. Gretzky was not the hands-down greatest ever, not by a longshot, and he doesn't deserve that honour.
