  1. It's kinda crazy seeing a city lose its viability to host major pro sports teams. I'm pretty sure a city that has hosted a team in all four major sports has never lost all of them like Oakland might. The closest I can think of is San Diego, but you'd have to count the short-lived Mariners in the WHA  just to get to three different major leagues

I still don't know why people are saying "relaunch".  It's like saying the 99 Browns were a relaunch, or the new Sonics were a relaunch.  They're new entities that just happen to share a name.

wut? It's the same league now owned by a different group. They have the history, the record books, the trademarks and copyrights.  What else is there that makes an entity an entity?

The Seals were many colors and names throughout their short, chaotic history; they were originally kelly green/white/blue as the California Seals, then renamed to the Oakland Seals, then renamed again to California Golden Seals when they moved to kelly green/gold/white after Finley bought them in the 70's and later recolored again to teal/yellow/white for their final two seasons.

They also played 2 games as the Bay Area Seals

  4. If the Rams came out with these from the get-go they wouldn't be getting near as much praise as they are now. The numbers are the worst in the league, the nametag is beyond stupid, and the shoulders/sleeves are a lame imitation of what was a great look for decades. Their helmets still suck, they still go for the yoga pants half the time, and they promote their uniforms with players who look like they're wearing ballerina tutus. From a 0/10 uniform to a 1/10. Demoff and crew are doing great things out there in Los Angeles

It will be interesting to see what Montreal decides to do. Currently the Bell Centre only has banners for Stanley Cups & retired numbers, but considering that this was their most successful run in nearly 30 years I'm sure they'll want to do something to acknowledge it. Unless I'm mistaken, every team that has lost in the finals since Montreal last did in '89 has a banner commemorating it

Maybe they take a page out of the Bruins books and add one banner highlighting every season when they were a Cup finalist but didn't win. The Bruins include the seasons they won, but this would be a bit redundant for the Habs.

Breaking the tradition of only putting up banners for Cup wins seems like an admission that they've sucked for 30 years and are desperate

A recent Madden promo showed off the Bengals’ new white over black combo. IMO this looks fantastic matched up with the Steelers and Id love to see it any day over the washed out all white.

I also think that the black jersey paired with the simple white pants with the black stripes looks very sharp. If they stuck with these two combos for the home and away and burned the orange stripe pants, this update would be near perfect and always match up well against their AFC North rivals. However, I can't expect them to be so wise.

These two picture are perfect examples of how small details can ruin a uniform: The yoga pants look makes the top one look ridiculous, the undershirt in the second makes it look unprofessional and lazy

Note that Bettman's already said jersey ads aren't happening next year, though. Dundon may think it's a good idea, but he still needs a majority consensus to do it; and I have a feeling that they'll look at the NBA's deal and decide it's not really worth it, because it clearly isn't that worth it to spam ads on jerseys at the major league level, otherwise more sports would've done it by now.

The helmet ad is essentially the equivalent of the NBA's jersey ad. I have a feeling that this is as far as things will go unless there's another massive event that hurts the bottom line. They just got some fat TV contract deals and the expansion money; I feel like they're not hurting for money as badly now as they were before last season started.

Yes the NHL just put ads on the uniforms, yes the Commissioner said jersey ads aren't coming yet, and yes an owner came out and said he supports filling the uniforms with corporate sponsors, but no it doesn't make sense to think the NHL will add more advertising

I agree. And no discredit to them, but my mind likes to separate the '94 Niners of George Seifert and Steve Young from the '81-88-89 Niners of Bill Walsh and Joe Montana. Having different uniforms is likely a big part of that.

Seifert was the coach in '89

[Shapiro] Hurricanes owner Dundon on jersey ads: "Look, I’d be on the very, very extreme end. Like for me if we look like Formula 1 or NASCAR, that’d be fine with me. I think the league is constantly looking at how do they maintain tradition plus maximize revenue and figure out the balance? And I think they’re doing a good job of it. But yeah, if it were left to me, it would probably be a good subset of people that didn’t like what I did."

Of course, this will never happen in the NHL   :^)   Anyone saying ads will get worse is just pointlessly complaining 🙃

I can’t remember whether the Saints wanted to make their helmet black full-time or if it was supposed to be an alternate, but I believe the league said they hadn’t given proper notice to receive approval.

When the Seahawks went through their first redesign for the 2002 season, some people wanted them to wear blue helmets at home and silver on the road, but the NFL nixed that, too.

Why do the Saints hate gold so much? It's so bizarre

As long as the secondary helmet stays only with designated alternate uniforms and follows the same rules as far as how frequent a team can wear them as said alternate uniforms (and safety is up to par), I have no qualms with this change.

I do hope they keep the current uniform regulations in place, though. Two alternates is the perfect number and allowing alternates to be worn only 3 times is also the optimal amount. Alternate uniforms are just that and shouldn’t be shoehorned in to act as a “Home 2” jersey imo. Similarly, uniform continuity is important, and it signals brand continuity; the NFL needs to avoid the jumbled mess that the NBA and its plethora of ever-changing uniforms have become.

Teams like the Titans, Jags, and Rams already have a jumbled mess of an identity because they constantly swap out different colored pants, socks, undershirts, and push the alternate jerseys to the limit. Alternate helmets will only make that worse league-wide. There are only 17 games in the season, the NFL has no room at all to be churning out alternate looks like the other three leagues

Teams can pair the second helmet with alternate, throwback or Color Rush uniforms

Little bit more than just the throwbacks.

Oh man this is going to be an absolute :censored: show

I saw on ProFootballTalk that the Washington Football Team was unable to trademark that name. A it was too generic and B a squatter already applied for it.

Good that's what they get for having a non-name for two years
