Maybe whichever jersey they believe will sell the most? Those two things aren't always exclusive.

Why do you think that is? In other words, when would a long-standing alt selling more than a long-standing primary NOT be an indication that the alt is perceived as the better jersey?

    Duke out. Kansas out. 🤌

Huge basketball hangover today. Spent an entire day at the arena for yesterday's Denver sessions. Some takeaways: The Creighton fan base is infectious. Nobodyyy likes Gonzaga. The GCU student section is on drugs (the fun kind!). Was not good night for anyone wearing a Purdue gear in public. ASU and TCU both deserved to advance, that game was like a heavyweight fight.

Even if your team isn't in it, attending the first round of the NCAAs if a bucket list thing for any Tournament fan. Highly recommend!

I've worked at the last three tournaments that have been in Milwaukee. You can't beat the atmosphere.

Injuries happen and that’s always a risk in international tournaments, but lots of players have been injured playing in pointless spring training games already this year. How’s this any different?

Is he really that good though?  Dude's been made out to be a Mt. Rushmore kind  of guy, but he's been to one Super Bowl, and that was over a decade ago.  True legends can find a way to get there even with mediocre talent, and he's had better-than-mediocre talent for a lot of his career.  He's simply not a threat in the playoffs when the competition is better, and while I may be proven wrong, his career is going to end on a very sad note.

Using a top pick on a RB is simply asinine.  I said it then, I said it with Barkley, and I'll say it anytime any dumb team does it.  If you're drafting in the top 10, chances are you're not a good team and don't have the luxury to be picking a RB who's career will likely be winding down by the time you are good.  I read some stat that there's a very low number of RBs who have been productive into their second contracts.  They're more/less fungible, and the main differentiating factor is whether they can catch or not, and whether they're "power" backs or not.

Elliot will end up like Lesean McCoy - maybe winning a Super Bowl, but as a backup on a team with a starter that's an otherwise unremarkable guy.

Dan Marino would like a word with you

Oof, yeah. This is got to be some form of bad, long term PTSD, because calling Derek Carr a better option than Aaron Rodgers is flatline absurd. And I say that as a big Derek Carr fan and defender, too. “Prolapsing” (god, that’s such a gross word 😂) is MUCH more likely to come from Carr than it ever would from Aaron Rodgers, who is probably one of the best ever in terms of preventing something like that from happening.

Like, I really do think that people are taking some of his weirdness, and the way the media has overblown it, as overshadowing just how damn good the dude is, even at 39. I don’t like Aaron Rodgers, either. I defended him for a long time and the past few years he’s just gotten too much for me with the off the field stuff. But that still doesn’t mean I can’t recognize just how good he really is on the field. I for one would be over the moon if my team were to end up with him under center.

It’s really simple. The Jets went out and made this move because he is the very best option they could’ve possibly gotten. I get the hesitation, both when it comes to him and the Jets usual futility. But really, try to enjoy this one. It’s probably going to work out on the field so much better than you’re used to.

There is logic to that statement, though. If you have a team that is supposed to be based on running and defense, you don't want to have Steve Spurrier coach it (because he'll admittedly want to 'pitch the rock cause it was so nice out there') or possibly Aaron Rodgers, because he will check out of called runs because he wants to throw.

I cheer for the uniform and colors, not the player wearing them. He was/is an odd duck, but he used to be MY odd duck. Now? Let's see if we suck under Love or not. I have no real feelings toward Rodgers, because he isn't (almost) on my team any longer.

In fairness (not that I like Nike speak, because I hate it and it's dumb), I think they said it was more "a Jaguar walking through the shadows".

Nope. Down a rabbit hole, but here's the money shot:

"The player becomes the Jaguar," said designer Todd Van Horne. "The player is coming out of the shadows on the hunt."

I'm not sure I totally understand the logic.  It kinda penalizes teams for finding and developing talent later in the draft.  I'm not saying it's anything that's screwing the Eagles, since every team plays by those same rules, it just stings especially hard when it's a QB that's gonna get around $150-200M guaranteed, and you kinda have to do it after year 3.

Curious what other non-1st-round QBs have been in this situation since the standardized rookie rules were in place. Was Russ before or after that?

Russ was the same rules as Hurts, but an odd case. His agent ONLY has him for a client, so he doesn't care about how negotiations go, since they can't be used against him with other teams or clients. The agent holds out for the best deal possible.

Players didn't want rookies making so much money, so they limited the amount of money that they could make, but also got shorter contracts for draftees after round 1 so that they could be free agents sooner. Owners and players both liked the deal.

it’s apparently 4/84, “only” 40 guaranteed.  Seems low for ESPN’s #2 overall free agent.

Eagles now down 2 defensive starters, likely to lose two more pro bowlers by tomorrow, and have told Darius Slay to find a trade.

Man it’s nice having a QB on a rookie deal. It’s ironic that if Jalen Hurts was drafted in 1st round, he wouldn’t get paid till next off season. But he gets paid sooner by being a 2nd round pick. Not sure how that makes sense.

Because there's a limit to how far-sighted they can be in negotiating a contract (NFL and NFLPA). NFLPA gives up some negotiating rights for first rounders in exchange for more movement beyond the first round.

I wonder if, in the present day, are MLB and the A's ownership as worried about butts in seats as they are about TV and streaming revenue. Looking at USFL and XFL football, I think you're looking at television companies that are happy to pay for sports programming and not as worried about butts in seats anymore. Granted, it also means the A's and Rays aren't getting national game of the week coverage unless they play teams that non-Rays and A's fans come in to watch, so Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers. Moving into Vegas might get the Athletics more fans showing up on game day, but they'll also have to do a lot of night games unless they move into a dome. For the Rays, I'm surprised that a new stadium hasn't happened yet, but if the owners are overestimating what they can get without having to pay for, it makes perfect sense.

You lose me at the point that you try to compare what an MLB, NFL, NBA, and possibly NHL team do compared to any other league or sport. I don't think the comparison is valid because the finances are totally different.

While I loved the look the Panthers actually put on the field, I've always loved these just as much if not more.

I know it may be the lighting and age of the picture, but I wonder if the Panthers originally had a different shade of blue in mind than the one they eventually went with.

I dunno - given that 'Carolina blue' is a thing, I'm guessing not.

I've been thinking the same since I first saw the white-paneled batting helmet. I mean shoot, dare to be different, Minnesota. Go all the way out there. Plus, it just looks so dang good

I think the Orioles were the last team to do the white-paneled cap thing on anything close to a regular basis about a decade or so ago (?); before that, I wanna say the Reds were the last (maybe the only) team to do a full-time white home cap for a full season? Anyway, my point is it'd be unique and the Twins could really own it in this present era...

Yeah, about that. Neither of those mean it would be any good.

This white-paneled batting helmet is a callback that never matched the home hat. It needn't do so now, either.

I agree with you on the Minnesota patch. I know they were going for a simplistic look, and it works for the most part. But that patch looks like it was designed 5 minutes before the jerseys went into production. Same thing with the new M logo.

But remember, it could be worse.

    Much worse.

Something for the fun fact bunch: Dom Capers is the only man in NFL history to be the inaugural Head Coach of two expansion teams (Panthers 1995, Texans 2002).

Also fun fact about Dom Capers - his hair isn't old enough to legally drink.

Huge swing and miss by Dwayne.

The Las Vegas Outlaws might've been the most memorable team from XFL v1. And unlike other original XFL identities, there was nothing edgy or offensive about that nickname, which makes it acceptable for the year 2023. And hell, the logo still goes hard. No doubt the city would've embraced Outlaws more than Vipers this go-around.

    Why?

Yes, it happened. I want to say a few of the Browns defensive backups in the early 1980's would have been doing this. The salaries weren't as big as now, but they were still pretty decent for the time. The list below unfortunately only shows if they played in both leagues, not if they played in both leagues in the same year:

    https://www.usflsite.com/nflplayers2.php

That players appeared in both leagues isn't in dispute. You make it sound as if players moved from one league to the other on a season's basis. I did a quick search in that list for Browns and I'm not seeing it. In fact, many of the names on that list don't have NFL experience on both sides of the USFL's existence, or have experience in the NFL in 1987, which 'strikes' me as unique to that three week period in 1987.

One of San Antonio's DB's left Hamilton to play in the States. If Montreal is not the only CFL team with ownership issues I could see more guys making the jump. I also think we will see guys playing in the XFL, then going back to Canada, similar to how during the USFL/NFL days, players would jump between leagues if they weren't the stars.

Huh? Are you saying that there were players who played in both leagues, one after the other, because they weren't stars? I don't remember that.

Yes they do, it matches the away uniform color at least.

Also, pretty sure Bob Stoops wore his 2020 Renegades hat yesterday...

I'm not hating the football and like the potential, but some of these unis/identities will definitely need altering if the league continues.

No, it will need to make money if the league continues.
