One thing I find kind of confusing, aesthetically, about some of these games is how the on-ice product is meant to look "faded" or retro or fauxback or whatever, but then you have all the elaborate, theatrical decoration around the ice, putting up fake shipwrecks and docks like it's a touristy mini-golf course. Feels like those two things are a little at odds.

The Winter Classic as a whole has gone from a celebration of the history & traditions of the sport to more of a regional celebration, especially when you have a market that's hosting for the first time. That's why we've seen players go from wearing old school suits and fedoras to the game to dressing like fish market employees, Elvis impersonators, and oil rig workers.

    Wellp, this could get interesting...

Lawsuit alleges Kraken violated Metropolitans trademark with Winter Classic jerseys

Not exactly a security guard vs Baltimore Ravens type scenario—this is more like, according to the story, an Entrepreur Who Holds IP on Defunct Hometown Team And Sells Merch Using That IP vs Brand New Top-level Team In Same Town Who Made Friendly With Then [Allegedly] Lowballed Said IP Holder on Merchandiging Rights type scenario.

This might actually be worse, if any of these allegations are proven true through due process. But I ain't the lawyer up in here, just the herald delivering the news as it ran across my in-phone feed earlier today...

I feel like the Kraken would’ve had lawyers sign off on the jerseys before putting them into production. They seemed to stray just far enough away from the Metropolitans jersey to keep everything kosher. The S shape is based on their primary logo, it says KRAKEN instead of SEATTLE, and they used their normal colour scheme.

  3. I don’t think you realize what a hard reboot is. You make it sound like the current Rams look has 0 redeemable qualities and they need an entirely new colour scheme, logos, and uniforms.

It's definitely far from perfect, but I think they’re just a few tweaks away from a great set. The top priorities should be getting rid of the gradients, dumping the bone (which they’re already doing), and ditching the monochrome looks. I can live with the segmented horn & the chest patches.

Sleeves? No. They had Christmas jerseys before that didn't have the sleeves. They all had a similar wordmark but everything else was close to the regular uniform.

I’m aware that they all weren’t sleeved, but most of the Christmas Day jerseys were lazy and generic. One year they literally just took the normal jerseys, swapped the wordmark for a logo, and moved the nameplate below the numbers.

Say what you want about the city jerseys, at least Nike lets each team come up with unique designs.

The state of NBA aesthetics are so bad, teams wearing traditional home/away uniforms and normal courts are viewed as a breath of fresh air.

Not according to social media. I’ve seen at least half a dozen nostalgia bait posts about how the NBA needs to go back to special Christmas uniforms, mainly due to LeBron tweeting about it.

I figured it was inevitable that people would get nostalgia for the sleeved Adidas jerseys, but it feels like it’s happened sooner than I expected.

The Kings only ripped off the Raiders. Their first NHL season was the NBA Lakers' first season in purple(Forum blue) and yellow-gold after years of wearing double blue and white.

The italic KINGS wordmark with the speed lines from the Gretzky era is pretty much identical to the Lakers logo.

Why am I now picturing the Kings in Dodger blue jerseys with red numbers?

My ideal Kings logo would be a black & silver version of the crown from this logo:

I’m willing to bet that having a banner for the IST was a league-mandate to give the event legitimacy. The fact that the Lakers went with the design that they did reinforces that the mandate wasn’t wholeheartedly embraced.

It definitely was. A few days before the end of the tournament the reports were that the Lakers weren't planning on hanging a banner if they won, since they don't even hang banners for conference championships. Silver obviously wanted them to acknowledge it, and I guess they compromised by having one banner that they can add more years to if they end up winning it again.

The fact that they decided to put it with the Minneapolis banners shows you how the organization feels.

  8. Should've happened a long time ago, but I'm pretty surprised they pulled the trigger in the middle of a long road trip. I think this season is too far gone to salvage, but at the very least fans will get some nostalgia seeing Martin & Alfie behind the bench. Hopefully he can get rid of the bad defensive habits that developed under Smith.

Like I said, the Yankees could easily do something that’s different than anything they currently wear but still fits within the parameters of their identity. Reverse pinstripes or monochrome navy would both hearken back to the team’s history, and a “Yankees” script or block wordmark on the front would look really nice. I mean, would anyone really be opposed to the Yanks wearing a jersey that actually said “Yankees” on it?

I've always thought that if the Yankees had to have an alternate, it would make sense to use the Yankees script that's been frequently used on their dugout jackets. I don't know if it would make sense as a CC, since it doesn't say New York, but it wouldn't look out of place alongside the pinstripes.

I assume the narrower placket makes that difficult.

Does this only apply to teams who use piping along the placket? The Yankees posted a picture of Soto's jersey in the team store, and the MLB logo is in the usual place. Unless they're still selling jerseys on the old template.

  11. Looks like the league is pretty much forcing them to do this. Early reports were that the Lakers wouldn't do it if they won, as their policy has always been championship banners only. I understand why Silver would want them to do it from a business sense, as it provides more legitimacy to this tournament, but it's a bit of a joke that a franchise that doesn't consider conference or division titles banner worthy is doing it.

  12. In their final season as the Mighty Ducks, Anaheim wore their old wordmark alternate during the playoffs.

    spacer.png

The Sabres wore throwbacks during the playoffs in 2007.

    spacer.png

Minnesota broke out the green alternates for the playoffs when they were still using the red jersey as the primary home look.

The year the Lady Liberty jersey was introduced the Rangers wore it during the playoffs.

    Sources: "Trust me bro"

Even if Ohtani signs with the Jays, it's only going to turn out like the Roger Clemens signing -- where the Jays got in over their head with signing itseif, only to ship him off immediately to a team who could afford a megastar and afford to put a competitive roster around him at the same time.

The circumstances surrounding the team are very different now than they were in '97. Clemens was brought in to a team that had been coming off 3 straight losing seasons, at a time when the Canadian dollar was about to hit an all time low.

The Jays had the 7th highest payroll in baseball last season, and despite a disappointing playoff exit they had been a popular pre-season pick to make the World Series. They've got some great young talent, and have had 4 straight seasons above .500, which hasn't happened since '93. They've already shown they're willing to spend on high end talent, landing big name free agents like Springer, Gausman, and Ryu.

Also, the round robin games and knockout round games before the semi-finals still count in the regular season standings.  The idea that only the semi-finals and finals do not count in the regular season is interesting.  That should remain for future tournaments.

The semi-finals also count as regular season games. The two finalists will finish the year having played 83 games, but every other team will have played 82.

I do wonder how the league will classify stats being put up in the final game. Will they be lumped together with playoff stats? Regular season? A completely new category?

  15. As someone who hated the idea of the tournament when it was announced, and still doesn't really care for it, I can't deny that the league has managed to make it catch on a lot quicker than I thought it would. Obviously a big part of that has been getting the media to buy in and manufacture most of the hype, but I figured it would take a few years for any sort of real buzz to surround it.

It'll never come close to being a real championship, but based on this year's bracket it will either be a somewhat exciting moment for a middle of the pack small market franchise, or a small feather in the cap of a future Hall of Famer.

Agency looks horrible with an outline, especially if said outline is indistinguishable at a distance of more than a few feet...  And they didn't  even use the same silver as the logo...

Anyone know if there will still be Authentics*?

    *with the fight strap

Fanatics has said they're going to use the same factory in Quebec that Adidas uses to make the authentic jerseys, so it seems like only the logo on the back of the collar will be changing for at least a few years.

I'm guessing we'll see an even bigger gap in quality between the authentics & the replicas though.

It's crazy that the Coyotes just realized they weren't going to get taxpayer money for an arena. No one cares whether they're there or not. Multiple municipalities have flat out told them they don't want them. They might have the least leverage in history to get taxpayer money to build a stadium and it's crazy it took them this long to realize that.

They were never asking for taxpayer money to build their arena. It was a privately financed plan, and the Yotes were even willing to cover the cost of remediating the land. Were there some property tax breaks associated with the plan? Sure, but it's not like keeping the site as a landfill is bringing in new tax dollars.

Does anyone in Nashville actually say "Athens of the south" though? Isn't that whole nickname based on one building?

The nickname came from the number of colleges/universities in Nashville. The Parthenon was built because of the city's nickname, not the other way around.

I have to think that it's either that or possibly some sort of substance issue and he refused treatment? Neither of those things necessarily have to rise to or result in a criminal matter.

As a Ducks fan, Perry never was labelled as an off-ice problem nor problematic person, if anything he was made fun of by other Ducks teammates for being quiet/milquetoast, and every team he's played on during his current journeyman phase has seemed to make him out to be a great veteran presence.

I guess it really does only take one incident/opportunity for a person to do something wrong.

If it were some sort of substance issue I'm sure he'd be going into the Player Assistance Program rather than having his contract terminated. Based on the fact that this was called a "workplace matter" which didn't involve any teammates or criminal acts, it seems like some sort of harassment of a team employee.

It feels like the kind of thing that might've just been swept under the rug in the past, but the new Blackhawks regime needs to make it clear that they won't be tolerating any sort of questionable behaviour from anyone within the organization.
