Exactly. I’m not saying it’s a good look, it’s a horrible look. But this other dude was on his high horse giving a lecture about “posting made up crap”. It’s not that deep, a lot of fans like the look. A lot of kids, fans, rock that same look when they’re playing HS or younger ball.

I mean my point was that you shouldn't be citing "social media fan reaction" as a way to gauge how nice a uniform is. Most fans will love anything their team releases. If they wore blue socks last night or added a stripe to their white pants it's not like casual fans would suddenly revolt. Most of them wouldn't even notice a difference.

It's like saying, "My hometown is a great city", and when asked for evidence you say that a rock star said so during their concert.

  2. Definitely wasn't expecting this. I figured he'd wait until after the season to sign, especially after seeing how much money Stutzle left on the table by signing before the season last year. Obviously it's a bit of a gamble considering the sample size, but everything I've seen from Sanderson has been extremely impressive. He was arguably the team's best defenseman last season, and could very well be the clear #1 guy after this year.

Very nice to have the whole core locked up without a single guy making $8.5M.

Why can't Minnesota be Green, Yellow and White while Dallas is Green, Yellow, White and Black?  It's not like Green and Yellow is an overused scheme.

After this season the Wild will have worn forest green & red for just as long as the North Stars wore kelly green & yellow. They have an established brand, and it doesn't make sense to throw it all away just to play North Stars dress up full time.

I wonder what the odds are that they eventually move to some version of these as their full time set? I'm not saying they should, but this is how it starts many times.

Maybe, but I would be surprised. We've also seen teams bring back throwback colour schemes that don't end up being full time primaries (Pittsburgh double blue, Vancouver flying skate, Devils red & green). The Wild logo looks alright in the North Stars colours, but it was clearly designed with the regular colours in mind.

  5. A leak confirmed what had already been suspected, Minnesota is bringing back their most recent Reverse Retro as a full time alternate. It looks like the only difference is the State of Hockey patch being added to the shoulder, and the regular NHL shield being used in the collar.

All that being said, however, I'm so used to business attire among NBA/NHL coaches that it looks odd not to see them that way. (I don't think the NHL has given up the ghost on suits yet, though, and I'm sure someone from Zombie Deadspin would be happy to tell me it's because of white supremacy.) I don't think it represents the downfall of western civilization, it just looks kinda bad, the way baseline ads look kinda bad.

I can't see it ever being done away with in the NHL. People complain about minor deviations from the suit look already. I can't remember who it was, but there was a coach who wore a sport jacket & khakis on the bench and he got roasted by the media. Tortorella wore a sweater once, but he said he was sick and it was to stay warm.

Maybe there's an opportunity for Nike to market a "coaches uniform".  Each team would have polo shirts (with some incredibly stupid name for the overengineered template that the polo shirt is on), quarter zips, or whatever. Home, road, city, whatever.  That way the coaches are in uniform just like the players, but don't look like slobs.

They should definitely do that for baseball.  Have a uniform coach/manager look.

Gordon Bombay was way ahead of you on the marketing coaches' looks idea.

apparently NONE of the team names are going to survive..which is a big shame.

At least that means we won't have a team named after a number.

The NHL won't have any involvement in the team naming/branding process, so we won't have a WNBA situation where the names/logos are connected to the local men's team.

  8. The Professional Women's Hockey League, which is going to be launching in the fall, is set to make their official announcement today, but we already know that their 'Original 6' franchises are set to play in the following markets:

    • Toronto
    • Montreal
    • Ottawa
    • New York City/Tri-State Area
    • Boston
    • Minneapolis-St. Paul

I'm not sure if we'll get any news on team names/logos today, but it will be interesting to see if any of them bring back previous women's hockey brands (Toronto 6, Minnesota Whitecaps, etc.), or if they start fresh.

Which is better for the White Sox, or any franchise for that matter? To play second fiddle to one of MLB's biggest brands in a large metropolis -or- play in a market that gives them an entire city, state, region to themselves?

I'd say it's better for them to play in the market they've called home for 120 years.

Based on your logic, shouldn't the Mets be moved out of NYC?

That was why I was rooting for Denver to be NBA Champions, even though I like Jimmy Butler.   I have my doubts about getting a first time World Series Champion or first time Super Bowl Champion over the next six months.

Well there are only 6 MLB franchises without a World Series, and we could see 4 of them make the playoffs, so it seems like better odds than most years.

  12. As much as people love clowning on Tom Dundon & the Bunch of Jerks mentality, he really has managed to turn things around in Carolina. Obviously a lot of that comes from having the longest stretch of consistency on the ice, but I'm glad to see some stability for a market that was close to losing their team less than 10 years ago.

I've been to PNC before, and having some dining/entertainment options surrounding the rink should help a lot. It sounds like they'll be keeping a lot of the parking, so the tailgating won't be stopping.

City edition jerseys debuting on november 3rd.

I guess it's fitting to have teams look unrecognizable when they win this pointless tournament. They really aren't trying to fight the gimmicky nature of the whole thing.

Penn struck a deal with ESPN to finally put ESPN's name on a sportsbook, and in the process handed Barstool back to Portnoy for a couple legal documents. What a piece of business.

Well that's a bit of an oversimplification. If Barstool ever decides to sell again Penn will get a 50% cut. They also had to agree to a non-compete clause which means Barstool is out of the gambling business for good. Funny that Penn realized quickly it was a mistake to partner with the Stoolies so decided to partner with ESPN, who also happened to go through the same situation when they tried working with Barstool.

If it's true that Penn National got out of the Barstool business because Deadspin readers in the government were denying them gaming licenses out of loyalty to Drew Magary and Barry Petchesky,

I don't even know how to end the post.

They were being denied gaming licenses because Portnoy & co. were frequently violating regulations. Some of the major rules around being a gambling operator are that you cannot promote it as a way to make money, can't imply a certain bet is going to win, and can't encourage people to bet more than they can afford to lose. When you have the face of your brand describing himself as a "degenerate gambler" and encouraging people to "bet your house" on a particular game, that's going to ruffle some feathers with the regulators.

One last point about sports gambling - there's always risk involved when the thing you're betting on can be rigged by the people involved, whether they're on the take (more likely in the case of college sports vs pro), or decide to take a "rest day" and not play in the game you bet on, or pull a Ben Simmons and simply not take a shot that may or may not have factored into it.

The "players will start throwing games" argument has always seemed a bit overblown to me. There's way too much to lose for athletes these days, so it just isn't worth it to risk your career. The main reason for the Black Sox scandal was that the players were being paid peanuts and saw it as their only chance to make some real money. Now most athletes are millionaires who have to be more concerned with their public image.

Also, having the market regulated means it would be much easier to catch any players/coaches doing anything shady. Instead of guys dealing with some barroom bookie or off-shore sports book their money goes through the government now.

Both the sites named in the article would both be absolutely atrocious sites for a new arena and the team are just going to have the same problems they had at Glendale.

Glendale's problem was that it was about as far away from the season ticket base as possible while still being in the Phoenix-area. By this point anyone who's been paying attention to this saga should know that the team wants to be close to their fans in the East Valley. Mesa has double the population of Glendale, not to mention the proximity to Scottsdale, Tempe, etc.

I came across a post online talking about the Jazz and Clippers being in line for new unis for the '24/25 season. After a brief look at the user's previous posts, it does seem that they have some kind of relationship with Nike (to the point that they would know things like this). The Clippers will have been sticking with their largely unchanged (and sub-par) logo/jersey package for nearly a decade at that point, so it makes sense to release new unis once they move into their new arena. Also, as everyone knows, the Jazz have gotten nothing but pushback on the highlighter unis, so it also makes sense for them to change soon.

FWIW this is a fairly tame assertion that we have all could have assumed by now, but it does seem like it's more likely to happen than not.

Well the Jazz will finally get to wear these alternate uniforms this season. Assuming they're a hit with the fans I'd expect the team to use them as the basis for the new set.
