  1. Good: shade of orange looks better, wider sleeve yoke is an improvement

Bad: single-layer numbers on the sleeve look out of place, black hem stripe bleeds into pants & no longer matches socks, contrasting nameplates continue to be my least favourite design element in the history of sports

Overall this feels like a lateral move, but at least they didn’t stray too far from their classic look. The ‘80s/‘90s set is still the best they’ve had.

So you think Salt Lake City is a better option than Quebec City? Because Quebec City seems like the most logical choice for relocation over any other city (Houston, Kansas City among others) but for whatever reason, the NHL has not been interested in going back there.

QC has an NHL calibre arena, and enough fan support to draw crowds. However, they don’t have much of a corporate base, and would hurt the value of the league’s TV contract. The premier has said he wants a team back, but it isn’t clear who would own them or who would pay the relocation fee.

It literally just means "Canadian", there's nothing more Canadian about a lumberjack than there is about an orca; hell, by that logic their logo should be a beaver or moose, the two most quintessentially "Canadian" things of all.

I’d say that a lumberjack is a much more Canadian image than an orca.

But team logos don't always match team names, anyways; the Bruins' main logo isn't a bear, the Canadiens don't have a shred of a maple leaf or fleur-de-lis anywhere in their current brand, the Tigers just have a D as their primary logo, the Bears and Bengals have a C and B for their logos, the Clippers just have their initials as their logo, etc.

All of your examples are of teams who use letters in lieu of actual images of their nicknames. It’s not like the Bruins use a logo that’s a completely different animal.

The stick in rink is more comparable to the Bruins or Habs logo.

This team is in equal measure a perpetrator and victim of pointless dithering: the estate being difficult about the sale, the city government not wanting to build an arena on the world's saddest plot of land

The city of Ottawa actually has nothing to do with the arena. The land is owned by the federal government, so they’re the ones who’ve put up all the red tape over the years.

From the beginning of the process it sounded like Andlauer was always the favourite, so that’s who I’m expecting ends up with the team. He’s already been on the NHL Board of Governors and is expected to be close to selling his share of the Habs. He’s the safe choice and has been going about his business quietly during this process, which the league always seems to appreciate.

Alright, we get it. Who are you moving to the West to make room for the Nordiques in the East? News flash: it's not going to be Detroit or Columbus.

    I'll wait.

The conference alignment situation is just a cop out answer for why Quebec City doesn’t have a team. If it was a market the league thought was valuable, they would figure out a way to arrange the divisions.

It will be interesting to see if this changes for the reds, as they don't have an ad on those.

So it looks like the NHL has decided that all Stanley Cup Finals patches have been moved to the left chest, even for teams/jerseys that don't feature an ad 🤦‍♂️

A guy who quit on Calgary- how marketable

He gave the Flames 6 years of his career, and you could never accuse him of not playing hard while he was there. Players aren’t obligated to spend their entire careers with the team who drafted them, and he at least was respectful & told the Flames his intentions so they could get something back for him.

He’s the son of a borderline Hall of Fame American player, and happens to be one of the few elite players who is capable of showing some emotion & personality on the ice. This is the kind of thing people complain is missing from the game, so yeah it’s a marketer’s dream.

Florida vs Vegas in the final. This league is a sideshow.

Oh no, two of the most marketable American players in the league are facing off against each other for their respective franchises’ first Stanley Cup.

I have yet to meet any Canucks fan that likes those uniforms over the Skate or any blue & green uniform they have worn in their history.

There was also a time when people didn’t like the black/red/yellow colours. The skate uniforms have only recently become popular again.

It’s only a matter of time until the nostalgia calendar moves into the 2000s, plus those uniforms are associated with a relatively successful period in the franchise history.

I don’t know if the pro-Skate crowd is as much of a minority as you say. I live in the Vancouver area and most Canuck fans I talk to prefer the Skate.

If it becomes the primary they’ll get bored of it and suddenly they’ll be clamoring for a return to the navy/maroon orca set.

When the hell did Bobrovsky turn into 2003 Giguere?

This feels a bit like Carey Price in ‘21. Elite goalie who struggled during the regular season, but came into the playoffs rested and started rolling.

It's unique in the CFL and pretty much across North American pro football, at least in the proportion they're using it in.

You must be forgetting about the other Greek mythology themed pro football team that wears double blue.

I know this is cross-posted from the SiG forum, but...ever since Vegas switched from gray to gold as primary homes, something had looked...off to me about those sweaters, which is why I held off for so long on getting one. Well I'm in Vegas this weekend for both mini-vacay and game 2 (finally get to see the Knights play live!), so I swung on over to the Armory (their team store) to get an up close look at those gold sweaters and...yeah, those are just a bit too glittery for my taste. They work great as a 3rd/alternate (and speaking of alts the black VEGAS script alts look much better in person than I thought), but as primaries it's just too much. I much prefer the original gray sweaters that feature the gold enough to notice but not distract...so that's the one I got.

I’ve actually come around a bit on the switch to gold as the primary home look. In a vacuum I think the grey looks better, but the gold & white jerseys work better as a set. Black being so prominent on the grey jerseys & almost non-existent on the white was a bit jarring.

At this point they should recolour the logo to just be grey & gold. The black crest sticks out like a sore thumb now.

People were predicting the NHL could surpass the NBA in the United States around the time Bettman took over. Just sayin'

There was a brief window in the mid-‘90s when it was a possibility. The league was riding high after the Rangers ended their Cup drought, and Michael Jordan had left the NBA. Of course there was a lockout immediately after which killed all that momentum.

Then maybe the PA should start voicing their displeasure about the situation; make it a labor fight or whatever. I mean a side-effect (or depending on you ask, the intent) of this whole mess is that the players' escrow is being held down, right? So it's affecting them too.

Elliotte Friedman has mentioned this recently. I guess the PA received some concerns when the Mullett Arena situation was first announced, but they were willing to tolerate it as a stopgap measure while the team worked out the permanent rink deal. Now that Tempe has fallen through he expects the PA to express a lot more concern.

I’m sure the players would generally be opposed to any franchise relocations, but in this case it’s the uncertainty surrounding the team that would be a concern for them.

Coyotes apologists- the team deserves another chance. Tempe is closer to their fanbase anyway! Once they get that arena done they're set!

    Tempe arena vote fails

Coyotes apologists- They deserve one more chance in Mesa, which is even further away than Glendale!

Most rational people who were Arizona hockey defenders seem to be in agreement that the Tempe vote was the last ditch effort to keep the team in the market. Even the league has changed their tone about the situation and is no longer including the obligatory “we remain committed to the market” spiel.

The only people who seem to be saying they deserve another chance are actual Coyote fans in AZ, which is understandable, albeit a little delusional.
