The Green Meanie
I found this picture from the San Diego Chicken's website while doing some research on him. Check out the thing on the catcher's head:What is that? I've never seen anything like that before.
sj32
I think Rawlings made those (we had something similar in Little League in the 1970's). They weren't very successful in making a dent in ABC's market for catcher's helmets (which was a standard flapless batting helmet).
winghaz
Green Meanie, I take it you're pretty young. Those catchers helmets were quite common, although they didn't last very long.
NJTank
Thats Dave Engle who was the absolute worst hitting coach with the Mets. He once said his philophy was taht if you feel you want a hit you will get a hit. One of the dumbest quotes ever. www.sportsecyclopedia.com For the best in sports history go to the Sports E-Cyclopedia at http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com

Quite common when? I've only ever seen catchers use baseball caps, flapless helmets, regular helmets, and with the modern-day useage of goalie-like helmets, nothing. I've never seen that piece of headgear before.
otherwilds
It was a catcher's helmet that the mask could be threaded onto by the straps. I had one in Babe Ruth ball once upon a time.
