leopard88
My problem with them...ZAGS down the side of the shorts. THEY ARE NOT THE ZAGS!!!! u did not hear they changing the name from the bulldogs to the zig-zags And the Montreal Canadians aren't the Habs, the University of Minnesota isn't Ski-U-Mah, Miami (FL) isn't "The U," etc. Some unofficial nicknames are more accepted by teams (as Zags is at Gonzaga) than at others (you don't think you'll see a Twins uniform that says "Twinkies" anytime soon, now do you?)...MooseYou don't see any of your examples on uniforms or helmets. On the other hand, Ole Miss and Mizzou have appeared on uniforms (and I'm sure I'm missing other examples), which is in keeping with your point. Also, the Orioles and Athletics aren't officially the O's or A's. Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.
SmoothieX
Plus, "Zags" is a reminder that the school is pronounced Gon-ZAG-uh, not Gon-ZOG-uh. I spent the week from Xmas to New Year's in Spokane visiting the girlfriend's family. They regard Gonzaga like a pro-team out there. The whole city is in love with them (and the Chiefs hockey team too). Adam Morrison is a god there. Lousy 80's porn moustache and all. Pride of Mead apparently.Anyway, the gf's Dad got all pissy when the ESPN annoucning team (including Hubert Davis, who woulda been the hero of the Knicks-Bulls '94 playoff series with those 2 free throws if not for Charles Smith...) referred to them as Gon-ZOG-uh.I think people from Spokane are sensitive about that to start with. Considering how many people refer to the city as Spo-kay-ne!I immediately made a note to start referring to them as Gon-ZAG-uh before I talked to him about marrying his daughter...
