Tim Thomas' Mask

Did anyone else notice what Tim Thomas was wearing for the Bruins last night? It looked like some sort of hybrid between a regular mask and a Cloutier-Osgood style cage & helmet...Here're some pics:

I didn't get a look at the back of it when they were on NBC on Saturday, but it looks an awful lot like the Dominator line of helmets that Dominik Hasek started. Side note - I like the bear and arrow design on it. They were talking during the broadcast about how his favorite offseason hobby is bear hunting with a bow and arrow.

The common goalie combo (worn by Osgood) was a Cooper/Bauer SK2000 helmet with an HM30 cage. Hasek used a different cage - an HM50. Their new helmets are made of custom composite materials and shaped to look like the originals.

Thank you Nick for bringing this up, as I also was watching the game on Saturday and ended up freaking out my fiancee with a "what the hell is that he's wearing??" The responses were illuminating.

So am I to assume that Cloutier still uses a Cooper/HM30 match? I didn't really get to see too many Canucks games before he got hurt, and all the pics I've come across have him using the old combo.

Actually, I was playing poker at the local casino here, and was watching the hilites on the big screen. When it showed a close-up of Thomas, I said "what the f*** is that thing?" pretty loudly. I got a language warning, but it was well-worth it. I knew something was awry.

Pretty weird looking mask. Probably for neck protection?

I guess they decided to make the cage over the throat to make sure that 1) no one gets hit in in the throat with a puck and 2) they don't have another Clint Malarchuk incident.

reminds me of a what Billy Smith used to wear in the 80's. He had a Koho helmet

and used an HM30 cage, but would secure it to the sides and not use the chinguard. There was a similar style used in college hockey also but I don't see it anymore.

As a goalie, I like this hybrid better. I personally wera the Sk2000 and hm30 because I always felt the masks were too heavy and restricted vision downward.
