Hydration Tips

I have a hurling match at 2 PM on Sunday, and here in Milwaukee it's supposed to get up into the mid-to-upper 90s (I think the Weather Channel predicted a high of 97 degrees). Now, our game has a lot of running involved, but since I usually play fullback, I don't have to run as much as the halfbacks, half-forwards, or midfielders. Still, I found last week's game to be pretty hot, and the temperature was only 85 degrees. We usually water up between quarters and take an extended break for halftime, but by the time I usually come out of the game (4th quarter), I'm absolutely dying on the sidelines. I'm picking up a moisture-wicking UnderArmour shirt this weekend and I usually have at least two bottles of Gatorade in my bag. Any other tips for keeping cool during very hot days?

A good tip to keep the sweat out of your eyes is to put a bit of vaseline over your eyelashes. picked that up this week from the EPL linesmen.

Plenty of salt aswell always help, have a gatorade or 2 a couple of hours before, and avoid alcohol the night before

I've always found that if you drink 2 ounces of water for every ounce of Gatorade, you won't go wrong. In addition, eat some Bananas, as you lose Potassium when you sweat.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008
