You're an American...you know how to spell!I DO know how to spell.. however, my gracious editor is Canadian, and he insists that it is Defence and Defensive.I don't have any idea why, but he's working for a pretty damned agreeable rate, so I'll take the occational "America Junior" spelling quirk in exchange for all his efforts.
