There are times which some of my family members from der Alterstaat claim that there is a method to their madness. This is one of those times which I think they're just lying. :P

Viktoria Berlin win 1894 final, 113 years late

BERLIN, July 28 (Reuters) - Viktoria Berlin won the 1894 German championship on Saturday - delayed by 113 years because their opponents Hanau could not afford to travel the 400 kilometres at the time to play in Berlin for the final.

The two clubs, who have long since played in the regional, amateur divisions, played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday after Viktoria won the first leg 3-0 in Hanau last week.

In 1894, Viktoria had been declared champions by default, but that lead to complaints that their victory was unfair.

The President of the German Football Federation (DFB), Theo Zwanziger, had enthusiastically supported the idea of playing the 1894 final and heavy leather balls, similar to those typical of the late 19th century were used for the two games.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

It took them 113 years to gain enough funds to travel 250 miles?

You haven't seen the cost of Benzin in Germany lately, haven't you? ;)
