Mlb In Japan Question

Watching the Yankees-D'Rays replay, they showed archive footage of Ken Singleton, Willie Wilson and Bobby Murcer in Japan in the late 70's/early 80's.

The players were wearing pillbox hats with horizontal stripes akin to the Pirates old hats, except they were the hats of their respective teams (Singleton on the O's, Wilson on the Royals and Murcer on the Yanks).

Does anybody know what this is all about? Anyone actually remember? (I was merely a glint in my parents' eyes at the time)

Houston Astros wore a hat similar to the Pirates - barrel shaped hat of the mid to late 1970's . Houston's hat was orange with white stripes and the blue star & H. I had one for years but lost it sometime ago. Too bad, it was a cool hat.

A lot of teams did it in '76 to celebrate the start of the NL, but only the Pirates kept it beyond that year. I have no idea if any AL teams did it or not... I'd have to look at Okkonen's book, which is somewhere in my attic at the moment. Anyone else have a copy they can reference?
