An all new contest

first some background for those of u who havnt read th ebook or seen the movie.

in 1948 george orwell wrote a book titled 1984 portraying what he thought the world would be like if communism and facism took over. in the book (and the movie) there are only 3 countries. oceania, the setting (british isles., all the americas, australia, and south africa), eurasia (all of europe and the former soviet union), and eastasia (china, japa, korea, all of souteast asia). no discription of the flags are given in the book, alough in the moviey the flag of oceania is shown (ingsoc means eglish socialist, the communist party in control). the flag of euasia is shown for a split second in black and white. no flag of eastasia is shown.

here is the contest- desighn a home, road, and alt. hockey set for oceania based on the flag

fyi-the symbol with ingsoc and the hands shaking is used like a national coat of arms in the movie. the red "v" alone and the clapsed hands alone are aslo used. contest closes on june 6th.

This is a pretty original idea for a contest, way to go. Now I just wish I had some artistic talent to make an attempt at this.

For those who haven't read the book, I highly recommend doing so. It's not a really tough read or anything and it's a great book.

The prison scene is probably one of the best writen scenes that I have ever read....

I think the flag was black in the movie, not blue. Pretty creative idea for a contest.

i thought that too when i saw the pic of the flag online. however i watched theg movie again and came to the conclusion that it is VERY dark navy.

- I figured a nation as consumed by war as Oceania would do little for ornamentation on hockey sweaters (I doubt they'd even have time for hockey). I thought about the old USSR unis, and how plain they used to be. The most important parts of the uniform were the red color and the letters CCCP across the front. Player names and numbers were practically afterthoughts.

- I used Winston Smith as the player. Who else?

- The number comes from Winston's wondering: if the State one day told the people that two and two make five, and everyone believed it, would that make it true?

1984 is my favorite book ever... I didn't even know that they made a movie. So I just went out to Tower Records and bought it. I'll have to watch it tonight... unless I decide to watch Euro Trip.

here's my take. Pretty big to post here, so I'm just gonna link it. INGSOC

Pitt and I had a lot of the same ideas in a rather simple uni, simple nameplate and #'s, and of course using Smith as the name. Who else?

If it needs to be blue instead of black I can change it, but I think it looks good with black.
