September 6, 1878, Baltimore Lords at Minnesota Millers (at Guthrie Theater)

LordsatMillers9-6-1878_zps4eabe11e.jpg

On opening day, the two newest teams to the league open up play with a closely contested match. First, on board 3, Branson Dennell, one of two veterans playing, sacrificed a rook early in the game in exchange for two pawns. The sacrifice gave him an early position advantage, but later in the game he could have used it to block the discovered checkmate Stacy made on him. Next, on board 4, the battle between the two late round rookies was close, but eventually Corbin was able to pull it out in the end with two bishops, a rook, and a king vs. a king and two pawns. Then on board 1, the rookie Pappalardo gave the Millers some hope with a late game checkmate using his queen, a pawn, and a knight. The match depended on the board 2 Capehart-Vogan matchup, in which Vogan got a draw through forced 3 move repetition to end the match in the Lords' favor, 2.5-1.5.

September 8, 1878, New York Kings at Philadelphia Liberty (at Fairmount Park)

KingsatLiberty9-8-1878_zpsf08a5b15.jpg?t

The two finals teams play opening week in a match where the lineup changes of the offseason ensure some close matches. The first match to finish, board 2, ended with Rounds up by 9 capture points in a blowout of Zephaniah Boyce. That would be the only blowout though, the others starting out with board 1, in which Peter and Blackbourne agreed to a draw that Blackbourne offered while equal in capture points and having similar positions. Next, board 4 ended with Ryers, who is determined to show Coach Washington that his decision to put him at board 4 was the right move, winning late game in a spectacular finish: a pawn war in which the winner would be able to take the other's only pawn. The match fell upon the board 3 Akers-Pryce matchup. In the end, Akers was able to win in bull :censored: manner by taking advantage of a mistake Pryce had made in castling late game. The Liberty wins their opening match at home 2.5-1.5.

Chicago Chill at Toronto Whales (at Royal Bank Plaza)

ChillatWhales9-8-1878_zpsf09b5c16.jpg?t=

The Chill, looking to turn things around after last season, opens up play on the road at Toronto. In the first match to finish, rookies Pete Rose (no relation to the baseball player) and Victor Remaley (reh-muh-lee) didn't get past the mid-game as Remaley 'mates Rose with a knight-rook combo. Next, on board 1, Barney Seagle proved himself early to Chicago as their number 1 by beating Dallas Mathews, a breakout star from last year. Down 2-0, Alexander Paul came through big against Boris Teel with a back rank 'mate late game while being down 3 capture points. For the third straight time on opening week, a match was decided by the final game. In the final game on this match's board 4, Warren Shufelt had blundered a knight early in the game, but was in position to beat Simpkin, up 4 capture points, when he accidentally stalemated him, drawing the game and giving the Chill a 2.5-1.5 victory.

September 13, 1878, Toronto Whales at Minnesota Millers (at Guthrie Theater)

WhalesatMillers9-13-1878_zps4153fd14.jpg

The Friday game of Week 2 showcases the Whales and the Millers, who both lost their respective Week 1 matches. About 20 min into the match, the director caught Dennell whispering to his board 4 teammate, Nolan Wallace, "Take it with the pawn," to which the director responded accordingly by forfeiting both of the games. Dennell had just cost his team two points, and at best half a point in the standings. Coach Gleaves said after the game that Dennell "will be punished". After that unfortunate turn of events for the Millers, it got even worse, with Edmund Capehart getting surprise 'mated by Alexander Paul in the mid-game. With no chance of his team winning the match, Pappalardo offered a draw to Dallas Mathews, who, wanting to improve his personal stats further, declined and went on to lose late game via smothered 'mate. Due to the penalty, the Whales won 3.0-1.0.

Some of these cities, like Oklahoma City, weren't founded till the 20th century. So you should either use cities that were founded in the 1800s or move the whole NCL 25 years forward. I like the simple logos and uniforms though!

Yeah, you're right, it was founded in 1889. Okay, check that, the 1878 NCL Finals will be in Provo, Utah Territory, at Brigham Young University. On the logo, just mentally substitute OKC for BYU. Other than that I checked all the other cities I've used and none have been ahead of their time.

September 15, 1878, Philadelphia Liberty at Baltimore Lords (at Druid Hill Park)

LibertyatLords9-15-1878_zps96981f20.jpg

The Liberty come into Baltimore this week to play the Lords. No game ends quickly, but the first one to end was board 2. In it, rookie Jim Vogan won late game over Woody Rounds with a move that looked questionable at first (it was a knight move that left a pawn unprotected), but paid off in the end by leaving Rounds' king with nowhere to move but into 'mate in 4. The second game to finish, Corbin-Haggard on board 4, went on for a while, but was not close. Haggard never got above 1 capture point up in the game, and Corbin ended the game up 6 when he 'mated Haggard with a queen and a bishop. Then, on board 3, 3 move repetition caused to game to become a draw, winning the match for the underdog Lords. Assistant Coach Jerry Portwood then went and told Becker that their team had won, and Becker resigned, down 5 capture points to Blackbourne. The Lords won at home, 2.5-1.5.

New York Kings at Chicago Chill (at McCormick Place)

KingsatChill9-15-1878_zps1326bc48.jpg

Crazy match at McCormick Place! 3 of the 4 games end in draws, including the board 1 Seagle-Peter matchup. The first game to finish was board 3, where, in the mid-game and both at a standstill when it came to momentum, Stephen Pryce and Victor Remaley agreed to a draw that Remaley offered. Next, on board 4, Simpkin was able to keep a losing effort to a draw when Ryers stalemated him in a late game that started quickly. On board 2, 10 minutes later, Boyce checkmated Teel with knight-queen-knight combo. Again a match fell upon the final game to finish, which, in this match, ended in a draw due to 3 move repetition. The Kings won on the road, 2.5-1.5.

Standings after Week 2:

1. Baltimore Lords 2.0-0.0

2. Chicago Chill 1.0-1.0

2. New York Kings 1.0-1.0

2. Philadelphia Liberty 1.0-1.0

2. Toronto Whales 1.0-1.0

6. Minnesota Millers 0.0-2.0

If the season ended today, the Kings and Whales would play in Minneapolis, and the Chill and Liberty would play in Baltimore. The winners would play in Minneapolis and the winner of that would play the Lords in the Finals in Provo.

September 20, 1878, Toronto Whales at New York Kings (at Central Park)

WhalesatKings9-20-1878_zps5d20b236.jpg

Week 3 opens up with the Whales visiting the Kings for the Friday matchup. The match was pretty straight up, with no twists or turns to the games or the match. It started off with veteran Stephen Pryce finishing off rookie Pete Rose in a back rank checkmate in the mid-game in a complete slaughter; Pryce was up by 13 capture points by the end. Then on board 2, Mathews, down by 6 capture points and in a bad position, offered a draw to his opponent Zephaniah Boyce, who decided after learning from Coach Washington that Pryce had already earned one point to take the half point and hope that either Jedidiah Peter or Barclay Ryers would win. It ended up being the right move, for Ryers would then defeat Shufelt late game via discovered checkmate with his rook. With the match already won, Jedidiah Peter offered Paul a draw, and he accepted. The Kings won, 3.0-1.0.

September 22, 1878, Baltimore Lords at Chicago Chill (at McCormick Place)

LordsatChill9-22-1878_zps2f04d022.jpg

Another upset for the Chill! It had only been two weeks, but people around the league were starting to notice that the Lords were a strong team, beating the reigning champion Liberty in week 2. The Chill had a statement to make with this match, and Boris Teel made it 30 minutes in when he surprise checkmated Jim Vogan with his bishop. The rest of the games didn't take quite that short of a time, but the next one to finish was board 1, where David Becker defeated Barney Seagle via a knight-rook-queen combo in the mid-game. With the score 1.0-1.0, Remaley, who was down 2 capture points, but in a slightly better position, not wanting to risk anything, offered a draw to Milo Stacy. He also didn't want to risk anything, so he accepted, making the score 1.5-1.5. It all came down to board 4 between Dan Simpkin and Collin Corbin, who were tied in capture points, however Corbin had a slightly better position. The crowd would have to wait a while though, because in the end, Corbin ran out of time, giving the game to Simpkin. The Chill pulled off the upset, 2.5-1.5.

Philadelphia Liberty at Minnesota Millers (at Guthrie Theater)

LibertyatMillers9-22-1878_zps451f56ba.jp

Another upset! At Guthrie Theater, no one expected the Millers to win against the reigning champion Liberty. The hope started out early when Nolan Wallace, filling in for the suspended Branson Dennell at 3rd board, won his game against veteran Jamie Akers with a smothered 'mate in the mid-game. Then things started to look more like they were supposed to, when Woody Rounds finished off Edmund Capehart in the mid-game via a pawn-knight-bishop combo, ending the game up by 7 capture points. But then, something no one expected happened: the rookie Kenneth Pappalardo defeated arguably the game's best Ivan Blackbourne with a surprise 'mate late game with his rook! This ensured that the Millers would at least get a draw. Just after the buzz settled down about Pappalardo's upset, Louie Bilbo, who was playing board 4 for Nolan Wallace, defeated Fraser Haggard via back rank 'mate to win the match. The Millers shocked the league with a win, 3.0-1.0.

September 27, 1878, Chicago Chill at Philadelphia Liberty (at Philadelphia City Hall due to rain)

ChillatLiberty9-27-1878_zpsdf7c206b.jpg

The first draw of the season comes in the Week 4 Friday matchup of the Chill and the Liberty. The first match to finish was board 3, in which Victor Remaley came through for the Chill, defeating Jamie Akers in the mid-game while up 5 capture points. Then, board 1 finished late game, with Ivan Blackbourne bouncing back in the late game with a discovered checkmate after losing to now 3-0 rookie Kenneth Pappalardo last week. However, the Chill clinched a draw with Boris Teel winning on board 2 just 2 minutes later via a back rank checkmate late game. But an unlikely hero in then 0-3 Fraser Haggard came through for the Liberty, winning by taking advantage when his opponent, Dan Simpkin, blundered his only knight late game, leaving him with only 2 pawns and a hanging rook to protect his king. Haggard eventually took that rook and the rest was just a battle to see how long Simpkin lasted. The match ends in a draw, 2.0-2.0.

Another draw in Week 4, this time between the Lords and Whales. Both sides only won one game this match, which were the first two games to finish. First, Alexander Paul defeated David Becker when he resign late game while down 3 capture points and about to be 'mated. Then Collin Corbin got a point for the Lords, beating Warren Shufelt via a pawn-queen-knight combo. Boards two and three went on for a while after that, board 3 ending when Rose stalemated Stacy and then board 2 ending on 3 move repetition. The match ended in a draw, 2.0-2.0.

Minnesota Millers at New York Kings (at Central Park)

MillersatKings9-29-1878_zpsb0902fdf.jpg

In the Millers' first franchise road match, no single game is close. The first to finish is board 3, where Stephen Pryce surprise 'mated Nolan Wallace in development. Then, in the mid-game, Zephaniah Boyce secured a draw for the Kings with a smothered 'mate versus Edmund Capehart. Kenneth Pappalardo continued his breakout success with a late game win over Jedidiah Peter in a king, queen, and bishop versus just a king scenario. However, it would be in vain because 3 minutes later Barclay Ryers put the finishing touches on his win over Louie Bilbo, back rank 'mating him. The Kings win, 3.0-1.0.
