  1. They gutted Truehoop, firing Henry Abbott and Marc Stein too. Will they buy The Vertical? http://awfulannouncing.com/espn/nba-layoffs-mean-vertical-headed-espn.html
  2. Not really. For NCAA hoops, CBS/CBSSN currently has three "insiders": Seth Davis Jon Rothstein Gary Parrish Matt Norlander does digital only and they had Sam Veceine as a writer until this time last year. Veceine is now at Sporting News. Campus Insiders could be the prime landing spot for Katz, McMurphy, and other college writers laid off. *-Now, on Monday, ESPN had 42 college football writers/bloggers. Today, they have 17, which is twice as much as any other media outlet.
  3. That's a little revisionist history on his part as I still have a few ESPN/Grantland episodes on an older Mac Mini. He had Al Michaels, Bob Costas, Cris Collinsworth, Carles Barkley, Katie Nolan and Rob Stone as guests in his last few months. Al Michaels was on like twice a year.
  4. With the layoffs of some specific ESPN writers, the local coverage writer/blogger who may have been a newspaper reporter prior also illustrates a problem which not just ESPN is facing..... Teams, especially NCAA teams, restricting access to players and coaching staffs. If you cannot be at the track for NASCAR interviews, so why have a cadre of reporters? If you decide to reduce your inventory of a certain conference, why have reporters locally who cannot get access? From the linked story: The Player's Tribune and Uninterrupted can tell the player's story and the teams can now hire one of these now out of work writers to control the narrative more by themselves.
  5. WSJ ran a story last year on the high cost to return on investment for podcast advertising. https://www.wsj.com/articles/podcasts-face-advertising-hurdles-1455745492 And DG, Unilever recently bought long time podcast advertiser Dollar Shave Club.
  6. The Ringer also keeps costs down by rarely producing video compared to The Nerdist and Frankie Midnight's Barstool. Oh, and ESPNU is moving production from Charlotte to Bristol. SEC Network remains there as well as ESPN Events. This may just free up space for their ACC Network partnership. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/business/article146919714.html
  7. Before we started such a thread, 350 employees were laid off in 2015, most were off-camera. FS1 did their purge around this time last year as part of $250M in cost savings across all FOX networks. So it's not like many of these layoffs can just move to FS1. ESPN basically overpaid for rights fees. NFL: $1.9 billion per year for 10 years. (Total: $15.2 billion) NBA: $1.4 billion per year for nine years. (Total: $12.6 billion) MLB: $700 million per year for eight years. (Total $5.6 billion) College football: $470 million for 12 years: (Total $5.64 billion) Credit: Jimmy Traina/SI,com A fair share of cuts in recruiting (thank goodness) and B1G coverage since they lost half the inventory to FOX.
  8. Running tally from Deadspin. http://deadspin.com/a-running-list-of-espn-layoffs-1794664091
  9. ESPN talent layoff start this morning. Jim Miller will likely get the names first. https://mobile.twitter.com/JimMiller?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author Or follow Deitsch: https://mobile.twitter.com/richarddeitsch?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author One of their NFL team writer confirmed his layoff yesterday in Paul Kuharsky, who covered the Titans. https://mobile.twitter.com/PaulKuharskyNFL/status/856554063151890432
  10. They were never CIAA. They were SIAC with Albany St., Morehouse and the like.
  11. WAC doesn't fit the school's academic profile. http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/sdut-ucsd-wants-move-division-i-athletics-2011mar11-htmlstory.html
  12. The 2016 referendum was very similar to their previous one in 2012, only a Big West invitation. Only the fee increase amount increases.
  13. The student referendum was specifically for joining the Big West. Plus, there was an expiration date placed on joining. Be in the Big West by Sept. 15, 2018, or the student approved fee increade is voided.
  14. Big West rejected UCSD's application for membership. http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/aztecs/sd-sp-ucsd-20170406-story.html
  15. Sage is likely to be one of those on-air talents to be furloughed as reported last month. In the SI podcast, Jim Miller claimed that in 2013, Steele was in contract negotiations with ESPN when FS1 was starting to hiring hire and basically was given the largest contract to contract raise ever and had her agent move her out of Bristol to L.A. EDIT: Rachel has six year old twins, so Nichols' has something to do in the evening. Rachel is the daughter in-law of Diane Sawyer and the late Mike Nichols, so she's got $, but Beadle is from real oil $$.
  16. Remember, it's still a radio show first and foremost, so it isn't going away. And a radio show which all ESPN Radio affiliates must air at least an hour of. Jim Miller was on Richard Deitsch's podcast last Friday to talk about ESPN as a whole, including the 40-50 layoffs of on-air talent expected in the next 60 days. Miller said that the new radio show isn't likely to have a ESPN2 simulcast AND that Golic doesn't have a new contract yet (he is making over $6M now). Wingo and Golic, Jr. are seen as his partners. UPDATE: Reports are that Golic has a new contract. http://awfulannouncing.com/espn/espn-mike-golic-reportedly-agree-new-contract.html
  17. This has a lot to do with money. The American gives them east coast eyeballs, notoriety, and the $$$. The American is looking to renegotiate both their current TV deals since Navy's home games is likely to become part of their inventory in 2018 as the CBSSN deal expires.. Football expires after the 2019 season; basketball after 2020. Since ESPN lost half its B1G football inventory to FOX/FS1, there is a chance for The American to squeeze out more money from ESPN sooner and get a long term extension.
  18. NBC to air 2018 Winter Olympics prime time coverage live across all US time zones. http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-fi-ct-olympic-live-coverage-20170328-story.html
  19. Here comes more Lavar Ball on Monday! http://awfulannouncing.com/espn/espn-bringing-back-lavar-ball.html
  20. He's got two more kids in HS, so since he's from L.A., FS1 may begin a bidding war. His went 8-33 and missed 20 3PT shots (8-28) in a HS playoff loss last week and Pops still blamed the coach! http://ftw.usatoday.com/2017/03/lavar-ball-lamelo-liangelo-lonzo-chino-hills-high-school-coach-stephan-gilling-ucla Lavar Ball is sports dad "everyman".
  21. Lavar Ball + First Take = Comedy Gold TPdqqobUJ6Y As Bomani Jones said, "The only two things missing are the sound of hair clippers and somebody selling bootleg DVDs."
  22. I cannot take Truehoop Fridays or Wosny Lambre aka Big Wos. Wos has nothing but the Knicks, NYC hip hop and progressive topics. I really downgraded him during The Finals after learning that at age 29*, he has no credit so Jade and Amin had to crowd fund his air and hotel. https://www.gofundme.com/27qc8m4 Really? Grow up man. However, Thursday's female only Truehoop was funny and surprisingly good even with Beadle's homerism. *- He claimed that he was ten when Biggie was murdered.
  23. Which Madill grad was it? http://thebiglead.com/2017/03/16/which-prominent-northwestern-alum-wore-a-purple-wildcats-shirt-to-the-media-room/ Some suspects from yesterday via Rachel Nichols: It may not be an ESPN employee, but those four we know were there. FS1 Stewart Mandell and BTN's Dave Revsine were also there, but I'll bet on Darren Rovell since he lacks awareness and tact. https://mobile.twitter.com/darrenrovell/media And Greeny and wife took to Instagram starting with their netjets/Wheels Up flight to SLC.
  24. Low, not as in sexuality, low as in off the record. Magic is untouchable. He's considered genius by using his NBA money to essentially flip food franchises (Starbucks, Fatburger, Friday's) within urban communities after 2-4 years giving them agribusiness food and exploiting it as a way to profit then comes in with a 24 Hour Fitness franchise to get money on the back end.
