Arsenal bringing back the "No More Red" kits for their FA Cup match against Oxford United on Monday:

Some changes between the kits in the announcement photos and what Arsenal is actually wearing today. Adidas logo and crest are solid black, while sponsor logos are outlined in black. Numbers are white with a black outline and grey drop shadow; no names on the backs.

It wasn't a written rule but FIFA always seems to want to go monochrome whenever possible. Do they think people still use black and white TV's?

In the UK in 2018, there were still 6,000 black-and-white sets in use. I'd imagine that number is higher in developing nations, and being a global organization, FIFA does need to take that into account somewhat. I wrote a story for the mothership earlier this year when an interview was published on YouTube with the designer of Nike's 2002 World Cup kits, and he specifically mentioned black-and-white TV being a consideration then. But the way he phrased it, it sounded like it's still something that's kept in mind today.

  3. I like the versions on the black background, but on the white background, having the black outline on the trophy and not on the lettering looks off to me. It feels like, with the bevelling and gradients and silver colouring, the letters are meant to mirror the trophy, but without the black outline, it feels incomplete.

The trophy is rendered very well, and the rest of the elements look great. This is something I could see being used for many years to come.

  4. So many good things to take away for Canada ... except the final score. At one point, a stat popped up on screen saying attempts on goal were 21-7 in favour of Canada, which kind of blew me away. Lots of good defending — except the 44th minute — really timely tackles and fights for 50-50 balls. It looks like Canada wasn't intimidated at all, which is a great sign. Hopefully we can take this same effort forward to the games against Morocco and Croatia.

  5. Gotta say, that was an encouraging first half for Canada against Belgium. We were on the front foot for most of it, just switched off for a minute near halftime and paid for it. Davies needed more power on his penalty, for sure, but hopefully he won't be daunted to step up and take the next one.

Broncos are in blue pants again this weekend against Carolina.

They decided it weeks ago. You're gonna see them with the orange jerseys too.

Seriously, though, you might be right about the pants, but I'm very skeptical about the jersey claim since the jersey schedule the Broncos released at the start of the season shows them wearing white this week: https://www.instagram.com/p/CiA3LdnPUV8/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY%3D

  7. Noting that the replica City kit up on MLSStore.com has no yellow trim on the collar and no trim at all on the sleeve cuffs, plus no yellow taping down the sides/across the back hem and no blue side panels. Yellow trim on the hem goes all the way around instead of just across the back.

    Authentic:

    Replica:

I mean, poor quality replicas are nothing new, but this feels really egregious.

Paul Lukas confirmed that the reason teams can't wear cream colored uniforms anymore is because of the digital court ads.

I have a good relationship with Godsey (he helped me out on a few ESPN stories back when the Bucks unveiled their current uniform set in 2015), so I emailed him and asked if he could tell me the backstory, even if only off the record, just to satisfy my own curiosity.

“I’m not sure I want to deal with the can of worms it will open, so I’ll tell you privately,” he wrote back. “But you, in particular, are going to hate it: Teams can’t wear cream anymore because it interferes with the digital ads that are placed on the court in broadcast due to the uniforms being so close to the color of the wood that is keyed out in the process.”

Godsey: Interestingly, it happened in the bubble [where the league finished the 2019-20 season after the start of the pandemic]. Up until that point, there had been no issues. So we wore the “Cream City” uniform for a game in the bubble — I think it was Aug. 2, 2020. Because of the unique situation there, with every game being played on a neutral site, teams were able to digitally put their arena naming rights onto the court during their local TV broadcasts. And because of that, in that first game of wearing cream down in the bubble, we started to realize it was kind of like the meteorologist wearing a green shirt while standing in front of the green screen — a pixelation effect.

[Godsey:] At that point our plan had been to start alternating between a blue and a cream every other year for the City Edition. But shortly after that season ended, the league decided they were just going to move away from allowing any cream jerseys moving forward. [Godsey later confirmed to me that this ban will also apply to the 76ers’ “parchment”-colored City uniforms, like the ones they wore in 2017-18, 2019-20, and 2020-21. — Paul]

Uni Watch: Were there any attempts to solve the problem by having Nike adjust the shade of cream or anything like that?

Godsey: There were some discussions, but it’s tricky, because each arena has a different court color, so a shade of fabric that worked in one arena might not work in another arena.

    Quote

Uni Watch: Couldn’t you just wear the cream uniform at home and adjust your own court color to provide enough contrast? Lots of teams have uniform-specific court designs now, so why not create a floor design that works with this color?

Godsey: Yeah, we’ve thought about that. I’m still holding out hope that there can be some sort of technological solution.

    Quote

Uni Watch: Most of your uniforms still have cream accents and trim. Does that cause a problem?

Godsey: No, because the amount of cream is so small and the players are moving so fast. If you were looking at a super-high resolution and really zoomed in, probably there would be some pixelation. But you don’t really pick up any of that under normal conditions.

The NFL needs a uniform czar whose entire job is to tell teams what to wear so something like Ravens-Saints never happens again. Like the Ravens and Saints submit their uniform combinations before the game and then I tell the Ravens that the Saints are wearing all black and they get preference as the home team so they have to wear white or purple pants. I believe soccer leagues have some sort of procedure for this. Just some common sense decision making would be nice. Okay fine I'll do it.

I, for one, welcome our new football uniform overlord.
