  1. But is that related to the arena locations, or the typical burst of initial interest wearing off? And how to we adjust for those variables?

You could look at the California teams. I only really know the Ducks, but they work.

The Honda Center is located in Anaheim and the intial interest has worn off, but they still do alright attendance wise and have a good fanbase.

On the other hand you can't really compare the Anaheim/Orange County city sprawl to the Glendale/Phoenix area.

  2. I don't know how unpopular this is, but I don't like it when baseball teams (and CFL now) have different hats (helmets) for home and away. I feel it dilutes the brand and in some cases takes away from the better look.

There's no reason these shouldn't be worn all the time.

I'm fine with having an alternate look, but keep the home and away the same.

  3. Re: BigBubba

The Flames have screwed up banners and I don't know if any other team does this. They have retired Lanny McDonald's and Mike Vernon's "normally". Which means the whole banner with the name, number and years played and the number is taken out of circulation.

    Flames_retired_banners_2011.png

Then they started the "Forever a Flame" thing where they honour the number and the player, but the number isn't going to be taken out of circulation. So they have retired McDonald's #9 and Vernon's #30 while they are honouring MacInnis' #2 and Nieuwendyk's #25. 2 and 25 are able to be worn by a player, but I don't think they will anytime soon.

I don't know if they felt like MacInnis and Nieuwendyk weren't worthy enough as Flames to be fully retired but what happens when Iginla retires? Are they going to make him "Forever a Flame" or are the going to retire his number and have two tiers of recognition? I know that not fully retiring MacInnis' and Nieuwendyk's jerseys isn't sitting well with a lot of fans who were around during the Flames heyday with those two.

  4. NHL
    Anaheim Ducks:
The Mighty Ducks cartoon was one of my favorite cartoons when I was very young and I still have some episodes recorded on VHS at my house.

I don't know if I ever made the connection that it was based on an actual hockey team at that age but my parents did because I have a bunch of Mighty Ducks toddler and children clothes.
I've somewhat bounced around fandoms throughout my childhood (Flames when they went to the finals and everybody else in Calgary was a fan, Avalanche because I liked the jerseys and Paul Kariya had moved to them and whatever teams logos I liked) but I always liked the Ducks and am now just strictly a Ducks fan.

    MLB
    Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim:
When I started watching baseball I was a Ducks fan so I became a fan of the baseball team in Anaheim. I remember being a fan of them when they won the World Series in 2002. Like in my hockey fandom, I bounced around a few teams usually based on whatever Little League team I played for or whatever logo I liked when I was playing Backyard Baseball on the PS2. Again like the Ducks, I am now strictly an Angels fan.

Just to add on the Anaheim theme, I'm also a big Disneyland fan so maybe I'm from Anaheim in spirit or something. :P

    NFL
    New York Jets:
My mom went to New York City when I was young and got me a Jets t-shirt and it went from there. I kind of fell off of the NFL wagon in the last few seasons though and don't watch it as much as I did before.

    NBA

    Utah Jazz:

I've just started somewhat following the NBA due to one of my friends being a big basketball fan and I was looking for a team to become a fan of so I picked the Jazz. I like the current J musical note logo and I like the late 90's early 00's jerseys.

    CFL
    Calgary Stampeders:
    Hometown team.

    CHL/WHL
    Calgary Hitmen:
    Hometown team.

    NCAA

    UCLA Bruins:

Looking for a NCAA team to follow and I picked UCLA because of the Ducks and Angels.

    Hawaii Warriors/Rainbow Warriors:

Got clothes gifted to me from there and I went to Hawaii a couple years ago and got more stuff.

    NLL
    Calgary Roughnecks:

    Hometown team.

Most of my favorite teams are due to me being an impressionable child I guess.

  5. I got one...

I don't think the Sabres cape jerseys are as bad as people say they are. As an alternate jersey for 1 season, I don't have a problem with them.
I got one for Christmas and it's not as bad as it originally seemed. It's grown on me and it's actually not bad for what it is.
  6. I like your WHL proposal, monkeypower. I don't like adding more teams. 22 is more than plenty for a regional league, and it's not like they're leaving a lot of big cities on the table while committing to Prince George and Swift Current. Bellevue and Tacoma are bad ideas with one team in Kent and another in Everett already. Fort McMurray is connected to the rest of the world by little planes and one road; that it even exists in the condition it does is something of an abomination.

You prefer to see a league with certain numbers with an unbalanced schedule than to have a well-fit quantity of teams per division with a well-balanced schedule? Damn! But I won't blame you for that because it's your opinion, after all.
I agree with admiral. There isn't really room for more teams in Alberta, I was grasping at straws for suitable places in Alberta and the N.W.

The unbalanced schedule will always happen because the uneven divisions and some of the Eastern teams only play the US teams once a year because of travel.

I just moved Kootenay because it evens up the conferences and reduces Kootenay's travel because they're with their province.

  7. Right now in the WHL there are 22 teams, 10 in the West and 12 in the East. The prairie teams are in the East, while the American teams and the B.C. teams are in the West... besides Kootenay. The divisional are all set up provincially (the East is Saskatchewan and Manitoba) and American, with Kootenay stuck with the Alberta teams.

Right now the conferences and divisions are set up like so:

    Eastern Conference

    East Division Central Division

    Brandon Calgary

    Moose Jaw Edmonton

    Prince Albert Kootenay

    Regina Lethbridge

    Saskatoon Medicine Hat

    Swift Current Red Deer

    Western Conference

    B.C. Division American Division

    Kamloops Everett

    Kelowna Portland

    Prince George Seattle

    Vancouver Spokane

    Victoria Tri-City

What I would do is move Kootenay over to the B.C. Division to even out the conferences and then rename the Eastern Conference divisions, so there's no more East Division of the Eastern Conference.

    Eastern Conference

Love your idea monkeypower. Obviously, Kootenay is a team from the B.C. area. But it would be more well-balanced if two expansion teams would join in to have a total of 24 in the WHL. Maybe one team from Alberta to replace Kootenay's previous spot and another one from the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

For Alberta, I would guess Fort Saskatchewan, Drumheller and Fort McMurray (even though those two have pretty successful AJHL teams) would be the best ideas. The WHL could try Billings again and it being in Montana would fit in with the Alberta teams.

Just going off Wikipedia population numbers, the Northwest team could be Tacoma (they had a team before), or Bellevue but I don't know much about that area of the States.

    OH :censored: YOU FOREVER GLENDALE

I've seen worse. They used to have a thing where you get 2 free tickets when you buy a $20 bottle of Absolute or Stoli or something from Fry's (a local grocery store).

maybe but that's $24.75 for a NHL ticket, a hot dog and Pepsi per person to see the current Stanley Cup champs play. I spent more than that to take my wife to see Phantom of the Opera for her birthday years ago.

... on a Saturday night, no less. Those should be the easy tickets to sell.

If they have trouble selling a Saturday game against the defending Cup champions, how in blue hell do they promote a Tuesday game in March against the Florida Panthers?

Weird definition of "lake". More like a puddle.

    GlendalePuddle_zpsafcb1e6f.png

If this water fountain constitutes a "lake" in Arizona, what constitutes an "ocean?"

  10. How are they going to do it though? Jiggy and Teemu played for the Mighty and non-Mighty Ducks.

I personally wouldn't care whatever team they were retired for (even though it will probably be the Ducks) as long as they don't go back and retire Herbert or Salei or *gasp* Kariya or whoever as non-Mighty Ducks.

  11. What's weird about that is that IMO Hockey uniforms are by far the most interesting of the four major sports.

I struggle to get excited about basketball or baseball uniforms, although I can appreciate a good one.

I think the reason for this is because hockey jerseys are the largest, so there is more room to do interesting stripes and patterns on them.
I think it's also because it has the most room for creativity. There are only so many variations on baseball jerseys. There's going to be a script or a chest logo, maybe a number on the front or not, a sleeve logo or not.

Basketball's the same. You're usually going to get a script with a number underneath it.
