Eh....doesn't seem like we really lost anything. I've never listened to Pardon My Take, but I have seen my fair share of people who seem to intentionally not take things seriously and/or wear sunglasses on TV for no good reason.

The glasses are part of the PFT Commentor anonymous shtick. He always wears them.

  2. So on this morning’s PMT they sort of explained what happened with the ESPN show. PFT said ESPN came to Barstool eight months ago wanting a PMT show and the name was “Pardon My Take” based until a couple weeks ago. PFT didn’t like the name change but Big Cat understood why Barstool changed it.

The two were angry with ESPN for mismanaging it and the people from ESPN who got the show cancelled but they were also angry at Barstool for putting them in the scenario. The two threw Barstool/Portnoy under the bus a bit but Big Cat is more of a “company man” than PFT. It remains to be seen how this effects the PMT and Barstool relationship because PFT (and Big Cat in a roundabout way) said PMT shouldn’t be lumped into the other things Barstool has done.

They also said the first episode almost didn’t air because of why it was eventually cancelled. The show was also supposed to be 20 episodes.

  3. I just don't really know what ESPN expected with Barstool in the title.

To add to Sodboy's point, the actual vehicle (Vanny Woodhead) the PMT vehicle was filmed in is PMT's. I'm sure they wrote if off as a Barstool business expense or something but the show was all Pardon My Take. IIRC, outside of PMT (Big Cat, PFT and their producer Hank), there was little to no Barstool in the actual production of the show. It was all Embassy Row and ESPN.

Did the show ever actually air?

Their first (and only) episode with Scott Van Pelt as the guest.

I will admit, I am a Pardon My Take fan and I listen to all the podcasts. It's a fun, smart show and has clout in the sports/sports media world but they're only going to get so far in the "mainstream media" with the Barstool name attached, even though it's not really the "Barstool brand" people think of when they hear Barstool. A lot of people at ESPN like PMT and I don't think the cancellation will have an effect on the podcast but I feel for the PMT guys.

The way the statement reads it seems it was less about PMT and the first episode, it's more about Barstool (read: Portnoy, Dave). Calling the show Barstool Van Talk didn't help ESPN either, it should have just been something related to Pardon My Take but I don't know if that would have flown with Barstool.

  5. And here's Nenshi's response,

There has been a lot of discussion about the proposed arena over the last couple of days and I wanted to take the time to clarify a few things. The City has been negotiating in good faith with the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC), the owners of the Flames, for months with respect to a new arena in Victoria Park. Our goal has always been to reach an agreement that would be a win for taxpayers and a win for CSEC.
Back when CSEC introduced CalgaryNEXT, I proposed a number of principles (which were unanimously adopted by Council) to guide our work with respect to any new arena. The most important tenet was that public money must be used for public benefit, particularly with many Calgarians still struggling during this fragile economic recovery. Furthermore, I have always maintained that there must be public engagement on any proposed agreement prior to Council making a decision.
I keep hearing people say that ‘the Mayor doesn’t want an arena’. This is simply not true. I recently released my vision for a cultural and entertainment district in the River’s District, in the eastern part of downtown, and a new arena is a vital part of that plan. We know, however, that it takes more than just an arena to make a vibrant community (after all, the Saddledome has been there for 34 years without spurring much additional real estate development) and I have outlined a solid plan to make a cultural and entertainment district a reality.
There is no doubt that the Flames are a crucial part of our city’s cultural fabric and a new arena will have a positive impact on our city. Everyone understands this. That is why the City has devoted considerable time and money to advancing discussions with CSEC on this project.
That is also why I am surprised that CSEC has walked away from the table. It’s true that negotiations have been long and difficult, but that is to be expected given the amount of public money at stake. The City has a fair and reasonable proposal on the table and we were expecting negotiations to continue after our August break.
It is disappointing that the ownership group has unilaterally determined that there is no deal here. CSEC was told as recently as Monday that the City is still at the table and willing to negotiate. The City has not and will not ever leave the table as long as I am Mayor. We will continue to search for a win-win deal: a win for citizens and taxpayers and a win for the Flames’ owners.
Yesterday, Council authorized me to share details of the proposal that the City has on the table now. You will hear more about the details of the proposal later this week. I think the City’s proposal is eminently reasonable and a good mix of public money and public benefit--where taxpayers and the owners share in the risk and in the upside. I hope you look on this proposal with a fresh perspective and the knowledge that I am fighting for you, even if it becomes difficult. Nothing of value, like building a great city, comes easy, and we must be wary of those who pretend that it is.
The City is ready to talk and ready to engage with CSEC. We have before us a path to a win-win for our community, but it requires partnership and goodwill.
I thank you for your support and I look forward to sharing the details of the city’s proposal shortly.

    Who cares about McMahon Stadium?

    Plenty of people.

The CFL isn't worth building a billion-dollar stadium.

Probably not, especially not the CalgaryNEXT proposal. Cost being only one of the multiple reasons that proposal wasn't good.

The last three new CFL stadiums to be built cost $278 million (Regina), $145.7 million (Hamilton) and $210 million (Winnipeg).

But it will be interesting to see if and when the Flames go back to the city to see if they still include the Stamps in a proposal because the hockey arena will include three out of the four CSEC teams.

  7. No the Saddledome isn't falling apart but it is showing its age and lacks a lot of the ameneties of all these newer arenas, same with McMahon (so much concrete), so admiral is right in saying Calgary is due for a new arena/complex. But what the Flames want from the city isn't going to work.

The admiral's also right about the concerts. Calgary gets skipped over for Edmonton all the time because of the Saddledome and its limitations. And if acts do come, it's often stripped down a bit and the acoustic aren't the greatest. (Keep in mind, I've never been to a concert at the Dome. This is just the common knowledge in Calgary).

I will say I never found the Saddledome's bowls wonky though.

  8. I don't think Saskatoon could work either. I don't think it's big enough and the two professional teams already in the province get supported by the whole province.

Everybody in Canada knows about Rider Nation for the CFL's Roughriders and the two year old NLL Rush have become a smash hit, but both leagues play a weekly (football) schedule with the Roughriders playing nine home games a season out of Regina and the Rush playing their nine out of Saskatoon.

Both teams draw from out of their respective cities with season ticket holders across the province. Since the homes games are only once a week at most, people are willing to make the drive to "home" games.

I don't know if Saskatoon itself would be able to fill 41 home games a year, much less games played on different days of the week.

The current arena would also need renovations to make it up to NHL standards. Saskatoon has been approaching the idea of discussions on a new arena, but I don't know if NHL is on their minds.

It's a ladder with a small bench seat attached for children to sit on during Mardi Gras parades. The wheels are for mobility. Hope it helps!

Huh I didn't know that was a thing. That's kind of a cool touch then.

I did see the ladder part but was thrown off by the wheels on the top of the thing but it appears to be for rolling it like a wheelbarrow.

  10. In my stories, I usually clean up the quotes and I actively make an effort to not change what the person was trying to say.

Mostly it's just taking out the filler words and fixing some grammar. (e.g. has to have and writing the word they meant to say if they flub it)

The biggest change I'll ever make is when a person has a long quote with lots of "ands". I'll replace an "and" with a period and a new sentence if it's a changing thought and still makes sense.

I'll admit, I hate the ads myself. This isn't the only site I use that has clickbaity :censored: , but at least those are on the top of the page and they're small and easy to ignore. I like scrolling down to read all posts in a thread and well, the bottom button to return to the next page is awesome. But these.... why?

I don't know about you but I met a beautiful single girl and started making $600,000 every month, so I'm in favour of them.

I never liked the NWHL because people started praising them for exactly what you said, existing. Let's be honest, this is Bantam AAA level hockey at best. I understand that people would love to see a women's league where the players are paid and I have no problem with that, but I don't see the point in it. It's not that good of hockey. I don't see anyone going around talking about their local Bantam AAA teams and I see no difference. Then again, that's just my opinion.

Come on now, it's not Bantam AAA. The Canadian National team, or at least the national program, has played Midget AAA and CIS teams in exhibition games, though to your point I do believe they did lose quite a few to both levels.

People aren't talking about their local Bantam AAA teams because those are 14-15 kids playing after school. The NWHL is the only paying professional womens hockey league, so yeah people are talking about it.

Like what is this? What kind of league is this?

So when someone from the NHL calls me and says, “Do you think this is something your kids would be proud of?”
… That’s when they lost me.
That was it, right there. That was the moment.
Because, while I may not deserve to be an NHL All-Star, I know I deserve to be the judge of what my kids will — and won’t — be proud of me for.
