    What purpose do they serve?

Next question: Can they serve whatever that purpose is while occupying increasingly smaller spaces on ever-shrinking jerseys?

No matter what you suggest their purpose is, the answer is going to be "no."

As someone who watches a lot of coaches film, especially for the Patriots, trying to identify defensive linemen in particular without the shoulder numbers is really annoying. I usually use things like sleeves, socks, and shoes to identify players before numbers for the Patriots, which is not the case for other teams. When guys are in a pile, having the numbers in an additional spot definitely helps with picking guys out.

As someone who used to broadcast, too, I can attest to more numbers being a positive from that perspective. It helps when players turn at odd angles and you can't see their front or back clearly. They absolutely have a purpose.

Something no one seems to have mentioned on here is that the Texans busted out the white on white look on the road for what I believe is the first time since that 2012 playoff game at New England. It was actually refreshing to get a break from the navy pants.

Looks like they've only gone white over white for 3 previous games. At New England in 2016 for a Color Rush game, at New England for the Divisional Round in 2012 (they got blown out at NE in the navy pants a few weeks earlier), and at Indy in 2009.

None of those bolded words equate to good, though.

I would argue that, when trying to build a brand, being unique and instantly recognizable is very important. Those aren't the only things needed to look good, but they do contribute to that.

  4. I wouldn't be shocked if the Pats wear the red throwbacks again this week, although it would be unlikely. The players were apparently clamoring to keep them after the Detroit game, and the team only scheduled two games of them this season. If they want to use a third, Monday Night Football against the Bears (presumably with the starting QB coming back) is a great time to do it. But I also understand if they want to avoid the Super Bowl XX talk.

Pete Maravich had "Pistol," quotation marks and everything. Nene Hilario became a mononymous "Nene" at some point, like Pele. Yao Ming seems like he did but he didn't, because family name precedes given name in Chinese (and Hungarian, oddly).

I can't think of any standalone first names in the NFL, just first names as qualifiers for the same surname, like my all-time favorite scenario, Tank Johnson and Todd Johnson, no relation.

I'm disappointed we didn't get a scenario like that in New England this year. The team has Mac Jones, Marcus Jones, Jack Jones, and Jonathan Jones. If we really wanted to make all of that clear on the NOB, it would be Mac Jones, Mar. Jones, Ja. Jones, and Jo. Jones.

I think the issue is that there are no rules. This appears to be guided exclusively by player preference. And in this era of fabricating personal brands, those hyphenations or the Jr./Sr./III denotations serve as ornaments to athletes seeking attention.

"Ornaments to athletes seeking attention"? My brother in Christ, it is not that serious. Steve Smith had a kid his name changed to Steve Smith Sr., and he clearly just wanted to mark that on his jersey. These are their names, so I would hope player preference is a significant part of the decision-making process here.

Never thought of it from that angle... I definitely see where your coming from here. Thanks for giving me that perspective on it.

I think that angle could lead to a slippery slope a tad. Notre Dame Fighting Irish literally does that exact thing. It reduces the "Irish" brand to a fighting leprechaun and a clover. That's just one example.

But for the purpose of discussion, I think you nudged my opinion a bit.

The difference there is that Notre Dame has always had strong Irish ties, and the Irish people have no problem with the name. It is believed the nickname draws from a description of Irish players on the football team by other members of the football team in a way they liked.

If an Italian school named themselves the Fighting Irish, and Irish people didn't like the name but they kept it anyway, then it would be analogous. The issue is one group characterizing another in a way that is not appreciated and making it their own brand.

  8. The players clearly prefer the tighter leggings to the regular socks, to the answer is obvious: striped leggings. Give them options for what to wear below the pants, but enforce that whatever it is matches the uniform. The other part here is for teams to stop making dumb decisions. The sock color should always match either the jersey or the helmet, it really is that simple.

Doesn’t the NFL give exceptions to the 5 year rule if there’s an ownership change? If so, I’m hoping Snyder gets the boot even if for that and only that reason.

Couldnt happen until 2025 due to the conference division rotation.

It can actually happen next year if both teams finish in the same place in their respective divisions.

So yeah, it isn't happening until 2025.

  11. Looks like the Pats are bringing out the throwback logo and endzones for Sunday.

That wordmark doesn't match anything in their history, though. I think they're using a font for it they've also used on their social media. I think this is the font used for "KEYS" and "HAPPY" in these graphics.

This is the throwback wordmark, and it doesn't seem to match what's on the field.
