  1. Are These Five New England Patriots Championship Rings Now Tarnished? Pictured below are the five Championship rings Belichick and Brady have been awarded. Suddenly, the next championship ring that will be awarded to the Patriots after Super Bowl XLIX, and the rings shown below don’t seem so special. Do you fellow ring enthusiasts fell the latest cheating scandal will affect the size and design of the Patriots Super Bowl 49 or AFC championship ring? (Click picture below for a larger picture)
  2. That's very funny! And I feel that there is irony in the fact that the Patriots last three AFC trophies (2014, 2011, 2007) will be of a football with no air inside the football!
  3. The Championship Rings From Super Bowl VII Continuing my blog series on the design of the two championship rings issued from every single Super Bowl, here's a look at the two rings from Super Bowl VII: Again, my apologies that the photo contains my website address. If I didn't put this in the picture, other web sites would steal my pictures and worse, those ebay sellers who make cheap replicas that don't look anywhere near as realistic as the legitimate championship rings, will use the photos to claim the pictures are of their replica championship rings! Upon researching the details for this blog series, I discovered that for the 2nd year in a row, the losing ring that was designed and produced was in fact larger than the winning ring. In a tradition that continues to this day, the team that loses the Super Bowl is still recognized as a champion of their respective conference. The Washington Redskins ring from this game was made by Jostens in 14K yellow solid gold. The ring is slightly heavier than the Dolphins ring, weighing in at 47 grams (2 grams heavier than the Dolphins ring). Any comments? If you want to read additional details on this, you can always read my blog.
  4. How many football fans could draw the old trophies from memory? Or even pick them out of a lineup? Your Heisman comparison falls flat right there. If the conference trophies were half as iconic (or as interesting) as the Heisman, they'd still be around. I don't love the new ones, but they're certainly no worse than the previous ones, which were clunky and undistinguished. I'm not usually accused of being overly modernist (or at all), but this was a good change in my eyes. I'd rather they were updated to a better design, but I'm not sad at all that they were updated. So we can agree to disagree. To me the Heisman is a great trophy, but so were the NFC and AFC championship trophies. In my opinion they were instantly recognizable and they were interesting. The New trophies are a football, and worse, have no character or pay homage to the great game of football. I guess we just have different tastes.
  5. The Ryan Championship Ring Collection Like father like sons, Buddy Ryan and his two sons, Rex and Rob, have won five Super Bowl rings as coaches, but none as an NFL head coach. Here are pictures of the five rings: (Click on the picture for a larger view) We can discuss the design of the rings and how they demonstrate since they are in chronological order, the on-going evolution and growth of Super Bowl rings. Or we can discuss which ones are your favorite designs. If you want the specs of each ring, you can link below and read the blog.
  6. I love the old trophies and am thrilled to have won one a Giants NFC trophy at Lealands a few years ago. The trophy was classic and elegant and paid homage to the roots of football. The new trophies are modern art but lack any character. Should we take the Heisman trophy and make it much shinier and modernize that too? After all the trophy lacks a face mask. Maybe tiffany can update it to look something like the AFC/NFC tropies. Would that be progress?
  7. Super Bowl XLIX Opponents Are Set Now that we know who's playing in the big game, we can speculate on the designs and details of the 2014 Championship rings. Here are the last winning Super Bowl rings from each team: Here's my educated guesses below, please tell me yours! It's a safe bet that if the Patriots win, their Super Bowl ring will be the largest Super Bowl ring ever. If the Patriots win, look for Jostens to make the massive winning Super Bowl ring, although owner Robert Kraft went with Masters of Design and their subsidiary Herf Jones, for their 2011 AFC Championship ring (they lost to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI). If the Seahawks win, their ring will probably be made by Tiffany. Perhaps the Seahawks, in similar fashion to the Broncos magnificent second Super Bowl ring, will try to replicate their logo twice on the top, but more probably, will choose to make the Super Bowl ring a little larger and place two football shape diamonds near their logo. Should the Seahawks lose the game, look for a championship ring with much less bling than shown above, but probably still designed and manufactured by Tiffany. Want to read more, you know where you can find the complete essay on this.
  8. Here's the last four winning rings from the Teams still standing... (Click on the picture for a larger view) I wrote a blog about the rings and the games, you know where to visit if you want to read it.
  9. I did notice the date being January 1964 and thought that was an error, based on the other document showing a letter from Lew dated from January 1963, written after he received the ring. That document as I said before is at net54baseball.com
  10. The additional image of additional paperwork shown at the net54baseball.com site has a letter from Lew, clearly stating that Lew purchased the ring. I hope you will visit the championship ring section there and see for yourself.
  11. Is Peyton Manning's Quest For a Second Super Bowl Ring Over? With a new head coach coming to Denver, a torn thigh muscle, and past multiple neck surgeries, there is a looming chance that Peyton has played his last game. Perhaps no ring company will get the chance to design another Super Bowl ring for Payton Manning. Payton did not win a National championship ring in college but has two AFC championship rings (both resulting from loses in two Super Bowl games) and he owns one winning Super Bowl ring. Here are the designs of those rings.
  12. The photo of the paperwork clearly states that the Packers ordered 55 rings before Lew's order was written up. I guess this means that Lew's 1961 ring is not the only ring (unless the Packers cancelled the order and went with watches). If the order did go through, and I can't see why it would have been cancelled, then there appear to have been at least 56 rings made. That seems like a lot of people, purchasing their own championship ring, so perhaps the Packers offered a ring or a watch to members of the organization.
  13. Yes! A bargain, one you get over the shock that you work for the team as a scout and recruiter, yet are required to purchase your own ring. Additionally, you can see the sales-rep described the ring as .29 carat - #13 diamond. That's a pretty small diamond! .29 would be 29/100 of a full carat, I am not sure what #13 refers to, and no idea what "GDV" means. Anyone know?
  14. Fascinating Tidbits Uncovered about the 1962 Green Bay Packers Championship Ring Slidekellyslide, a moderator and contributor on Net54baseball.com, posted images of paperwork he found inside a Green Bay Packer scouting report he owns. What he uncovered is amazing: I had mentioned previously that you may want to check out the net54baseball.com forum, where championship rings are discussed. The ring paperwork above is for this Jostens ring (check out the design of this ring, it is quite different than the Super Bowl rings and football championship rings of today! If you would like to learn what secrets were uncovered, you can check out my blog or, you can visit the championship ring forum at Net54baseball.com If you sign up at net54baseball.com you can post pictures without the hassle of finding a host for the photos and contribute with the thousands of members who frequent that site (the majority of them visit the vintage sports memorabilia sections)
  15. What an interesting photo! The center ring may be pushed a little further back, making it look smaller. When I take pictures of 2 or more rings, it's quite easy to loose track and not line them up straight. Even though it looks pushed back and also tilted upward (which also makes it look smaller) it is in no way the standard size XXXVIII ring we have seen so often. I bet you are right - the recipient was given a choice and felt the ring was too large to wear. He probability regretted his error when he saw all his coworkers with the huge ring and rectified the matter the following year with the large ring.
  16. Super Bowl Ring Design Predictions for 2015 Pictured below are the four last Super Bowl rings from the teams left in the playoffs. The rings pictured below offer strong clues as to what the two championship rings will look like for 2015. There are endless predictions of who will win the Super Bowl. The guesses begin before the start of the season and go until moments before kickoff of the big game. Here's a twist on that, anyone on this board want to predict what features the two championship rings will have for the teams that earn a trip to Phoenix next week? (Click picture below for a larger picture) I wrote a blog with my predictions. If anyone wants to see what I wrote, you know where to find it. Let me hear your predictions!
  17. Don Beebe And His Six Championship Rings. Pictured below is Don Beebe's Packer wining Super bowl ring along with four AFC championship rings and an NFC championship ring. Beebe may be best known for his famed play of chasing down Leon Lett and preventing him from scoring in Super Bowl XXVII. However, there's a lot more to know about Beebe. If you want to know more, you know where you can find the story. I love this picture, the winning Packer ring obviously is the nicest designed of the group. Any thoughts on these rings?
  18. The Cowboys super bowl XII ring is gorgeous. Are you not a fan of that one too? When teams won their 2nd super bowl in the old days, they got two diamonds side-by-side. The Dolphins and Steelers rings are very similar to the Giants ring. I agree with you on the Redskins XXII ring - made by Tiffany, the ring is absolutely bizarre. I say bizarre because the two Lombardi trophies on the top look horrendous.
  19. The Design of Championship Rings From Super Bowl VI First, my apologies that the photo above shows my website address. If I didn't put this on the picture, other web sites would steal my pictures and worse than that, those ebay sellers who make cheap replicas that don't look anywhere near as realistic as the real rings, will use the photos and claim the pictures are of their replica championship rings! The ring on the right is the Dallas Cowboys first winning Super Bowl Ring. Designed and manufactured by Balfour, in 14K white solid gold, it contained one large diamond and plenty of smaller diamonds. The onyx or sapphire stone, in the shape of their logo, matches their team colors superbly. This ring weighs 35.5 grams and is the first example of championship ring where the top of the ring is predominantly covered with diamonds. Perhaps this is the very first ring that we refer to as having plenty of "bling". As gorgeous as the Cowboys ring is, all that "bling" may have proved costly to manufacture. The Cowboys championship ring from Super Bowl VI is a rare instance where the losing Super Bowl ring is larger and heavier than the winning Super Bowl ring. The Miami Dolphins ring from this game was made by Jostens in 14K white solid gold. The ring is larger and heavier than the Cowboys ring, weighing in at 44.5 grams (10 grams heavier than the Cowboys ring). A very cool feature of this ring is that the inside band contains an actual facsimile of the recipient's signature. This technique was first done on the 1955 World Series Brooklyn Dodger rings. The replica signature was a big hit and was also part of the Dolphins Super Bowl rings that followed during the next two seasons. If you want to read more about these two rings, you can always visit my blog where I did this story.
  20. My personal over/under on how long before the folks at NFL Business Ventures (nee NFL Properties) shuts this operation down because it's not licensed? 10 1/2 days. I'll take the over Have you seen how many things sell on ebay? I'll take "over" too! My favorite items are the full-size and player-size Lombardi super bowl trophies! Like this trophy? Yes, I said I really like those trophies, I hope that comment did not upset you. The Trophy looks great!
  21. I have no skin in this, but here's a Beautiful World Series Ring Set Worth Owning. Championship ring enthusiasts and collectors often mention that ring collecting is too expensive and they can't afford to start or build a collection. Replica rings are often unlicensed and often offer poor quality. Here's a replica set that is very affordable, displays well, and is a great way to start or build your championship ring collection: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch Newspaper company, around 2009, released a World Series Ring replica set with an acrylic display case. I don't know what they originally sold for, but the set quickly sold out. Many sets were available after they sold out on ebay and could be purchased for around $100.00. That's an amazing value since that averages out to be around $10.00 per replica ring. They upgraded the set with a 2011 ring and also upgraded the display to include a presentation box. If you would like to read more about this set, please visit my blog, What do you ring-guys think of this set? Seems like a great value!
  23. Congratulations to the two teams shown above, both advancing to the next round of playoffs. The two rings shown above, from 1970 and Super Bowl V were the first two super bowl rings to have been designed and manufactured with the team's logo so prominently displayed with diamonds. Before the bling-rings became so big and fancy, in my humble opion, the Colts ring is so classy and the design uses the logo and diamond so well. What do you guys think? If you want to read more about these two rings, you know where to find the story,
  24. Wow, where did the picture (and ring come from)??? I wonder if it is an authentic prototype - who would design or allow the word "Champs" (this putting slang into the super bowl or championship ring universe).
  25. Great Picture! As far as size goes, my records indicate that the Packers 1997 NFC Championship ring is 10K and 41 grams. The Shareholders ring is 10K and 42.4 grams. The rings are different shapes but kind of look around the same "size" to me. Let me know if you see one as clearly larger than the other. The photo was very well done!
