  1. Those numbers just seem really wrong. I took some shortcuts to make this math quick, and that may invalidate my final answer, but chew on this: $50M more gate revenue for TOR than PHX ÷ 41 home games ÷ roughly 18,500 seats average between the two arenas = $66 more revenue per seat, per game for the Leafs. Only $66 more for the ACC than the Glendale Fortress of Solitude? Doesn't seem like the right markup. That's if we were talking about two teams selling every ticket, but Toronto always sells out and Phoenix has been in the 70%'s (80 so far this season, but still). Edit: Interesting to add that I could go to Ticketmaster and buy at least single seats for upcoming Leafs games when every one will be sold out eventually, but I physically could not purchase Coyotes tickets through Ticketmaster for some reason. I don't know what's up with that, but the Coyotes would not even sell me a first-hand ticket. Wonder why they're not making money?
  2. Does anyone else think it's weird that Toronto only has 6x the gate revenue that Phoenix does? I could easily see a $10 upper level Coyotes ticket being $60 dollars or more in Toronto... that's even before considering that the Leafs sell those tickets. Admiral, you forgot the other facet of Coyotes revenue... parking, of course! That's like a multi-hundred dollar revenue stream right there.
  3. Their promo video showed a player lifting the Stanley Cup... their intentions are pretty darn clear, but the NHL likes people who don't make a fuss. Them doing all kinds of crazy stuff to get noticed like Balsillie did won't get a team back to Quebec any faster.
  4. Presidents' Trophy is fine to me, because there is an actual award handed out. There's no "first in your conference, but not in the league" trophy. It just stinks because the team that wins the Presidents' Trophy normally doesn't win the Stanley Cup, so there's some bad feelings.
  5. I think it would look a lot better with the logo at the top instead. Since their logo basically is a wordmark, I don't see the benefit of writing out "WASHINGTON CAPITALS".
  6. Is it counterfeit or just a fashion jersey? I feel like most counterfeiters try harder than to have the stripes just stop halfway around the sleeve.
  7. If you want to burn something and you can't afford to burn a real jersey, maybe you should just burn a t-shirt or a hat instead.
  8. Just the look of Barclays is terrible enough! I didn't even know much about the eminent domain fight. If you want to build an arena that evokes Brooklyn brownstones, use stone. Not rust.
  9. Maybe he just wants a business that handles a lot of cash in a tax-friendly state for 100% legitimate and legal reasons?
  10. I hope he threw up a little bit when he put that stuff on. Just a little bit, and only once. I don't blame him for taking the job and I wish him luck, but damn that stings.
  11. Now there's a haircut you can set your watch to!
  12. Makes perfect sense... it's the Dred Scott of HFBoards. I think Plessy v. Ferguson is the case you were looking for. Dred Scott was a slave who sued his owner for his freedom. The Supreme Court basically said "F*** you... you're not a person; you're a piece of property, so you don't even have standing to sue someone in the first place." It's what I thought of when I pictured a hypothetical Quebec fan or Hamilton fan complaining on HFBoards about someone trolling them, only to find out that they don't even have a "fanbase" to offend since they don't have a team to be a fan of. And the end result is that the authorities let the trolling continue. "Trolling" in the first instance is, of course, slavery.

  14. Admiral's idea makes as much sense as anything. Ironically, I think the Twins would next have been offered the chance if the Brewers somehow declined. I wonder if the Royals were still feeling their big rivalry with the Yankees at that point. Now this is reminding me of how the Bills turned down Baltimore's spot in the AFC North because they wanted to keep the rivalry with the Dolphins. Only problem was it was a Kelly/Marino rivalry, not a Bills/Dolphins rivalry. And look at that great rivalry today.
  15. I don't know if that's good or bad for 1:00 baseball during the week. I honestly have no idea how baseball teams fill seats in the middle of the day in the middle of the week.
  16. The Atlantic Cities wrote a great story on the MLB and Buffalo last July. As both Coca-Cola Park, along with the Colorado Springs stadium opened in 1988, they are now tied for being the fifth oldest park(s) in AAA baseball. That's kinda scary; I didn't realize parks had sprung up like that for minor league teams. While looking at stadium ages, I discovered that Buffalo's is also the biggest stadium in AAA with a lead over the next ballpark of almost 20%. That was a really cool article for a Buffalonian like me who only knew whispers of that whole deal. It's a good place to watch a game. My only complaint is that the outfield looks out onto a tangled mess of highway, on- and off-ramps, and ugly property... if the stadium were rotated 180 degrees, it would look out right into the heart of the city. Looking towards the outfield: And compare that to the view behind home plate:
  17. I've always heard that Buffalo was talked about for expansion back in the 80's and our AAA ballpark is supposed to be expandable, but just no. We might be able to fill a stadium maybe, but I don't think the corporate money is there in any fashion. I'd wager that we're one of the worst markets for big corporate headquarters. We're almost always the #3 US market for Stanley Cup Finals behind the two teams that are actually in it, and I think we do well in NFL Playoff ratings after the Bills pack it in. I don't think we even register on the baseball ratings and I rarely hear anyone talk baseball around here; if so, only the big, big stories.
  18. They really kinda should be the Glendale Coyotes. The difference between this and the Cubs situation is that this is the Coyotes and that's the Cubs. What storied history is being thrown out the window? The city has basically put up enough money subsidizing losses over the years to buy the team outright (no, I'm not saying they could or should (and yes, I know that it was stupid of them)). That should get them something other than being suckered into another lousy deal.
  19. I wonder who "Kylie" Irving is. haha! i didn't even notice that. now it screams FAKE even more for the idiots who may of thought it was real ... not to mention that Kylie Irving's "game" jersey comes in two wildly different sizes... showed up to training camp out of shape one season?
  20. I'd like to think it's a Grandma Fiddler jersey, not a Vernon Fiddler jersey. http://stars.nhl.com/club/podcastplayer.htm?pid=117&iid=34787
  21. Not possible. The hypothetical arena is being built by the guys trying to bring the NBA to Seattle. Hockey is always going to be a secondary consideration even with a team at Key Arena. That said a secondary consideration Coyotes in Seattle are better than the no consideration Coyotes in Glendale. No, not really. I'd rather the NHL not be a catspaw for some effort to secure a basketball team. You say that like the NHL hadn't sacrificed its dignity long ago. At what point in the space time continuum has the NHL ever had some dignity to begin with? They cancelled the Stanley Cup final in 1919 because of the Spanish flu pandemic... that was classy of them.
  22. I wonder how many players have moved twice with a team under a single contract?
