Coming in 2005: Red Sox' first Wrigley experience

ST. LOUIS -- Reverse the curse? By the time the Cubs and Red Sox play in 2005, their first meeting since Boston won the 1918 World Series, one curse might already be lifted.

The Red Sox, who played their 1918 Series games in Chicago at the more spacious Comiskey Park, will make their first visit ever to Wrigley Field on June 10-12, according to a tentative 2005 schedule released Tuesday by the Cubs. The 1918 meeting was the last time the Red Sox won a World Series.

The Cubs will open the 2005 season with a three-game series in Phoenix against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Their home opener is set for April 8 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The interleague schedule also calls for a home series against the Toronto Blue Jays (June 6-8) and the Cubs' first trip to Yankee Stadium (June 17-19) since the 1938 World Series. The Yankees played at Wrigley Field in 2003.

The Cubs and White Sox hook up for weekend series May 20-22 at Wrigley Field and June 24-26 at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Cubs close the season with four games against the Astros in Houston. If the last two years are any indication, this could be a pivotal series.

A sore spot on the 2004 schedule -- having the Cubs and rival St. Louis conclude their regular-season play by July 20 -- will be remedied next season. The two meet for the first time with a two-game series at Busch Stadium on April 20-21. They conclude their season series Sept. 15-18 at Wrigley Field.

After facing the Astros and Cardinals 19 times each in 2004, the Cubs will meet those two rivals 16 times each in 2005.

Wrigley is scheduled to host 25 night games next season. Under an agreement reached last February, the Cubs have been allowed to phase in extra night games from the original deal of 18 per season. In 2004, the Cubs scheduled 22 night games.
