Linehan Looks To Be Next Rams Coach

According to Bernie Mikalsz, one of the top reporters for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Post-Dispatch will report that the Rams President John Shaw has reccomended to team owner Georgia Frontiere Scott Linehan be hired as the Rams next head coach.

Likely, Georgia will take Shaw's football advice and give the thumbs up, but you never know with her.

It seems all but done.

I'd link, but the Post hasn't actually released an article. Other sources had Linehan going to the Rams, but they were more probable rumors when they were written.

You can read the message boards and watch for the article(s) at stltoday.com, the Post-Dispatch's official website.

Personally, I was hoping for Ron Rivera, but I'll deal with Linehan. I hope he's got a good plan for the defense (that's why I liked Rivera so much).

There's no chance of the return of Marmie next year. Right?

Oh well, Miami had done better than expected this year, so maybe that's good sign.

I'm going to be real interested in his choice of defensive coordinators.

Like I said, I wanted Rivera, but I'm pleased with this choice.

Linehan was good in Miami and good in Minny.

He might not be an upgrade over Martz, but he is a change and a change was needed. So even if we just stepped sideways, we stepped away from a road block.

That said, I think this might be an upgrade over Martz for the head coaching position, because it sounds like Linehan will pay attention to both defense and special teams--both elements the Rams were not great at during Martz's tenure.

I think it's a decent choice and certainly in line with what the Rams' management was seeking - a young coach on the rise who isn't so seasoned as to have the cajones to make waves with upper management. Linehan is a bit greener than Rivera and certainly less set in his ways than a college head coach like Pat Hill. Given the disappointment that was the Rich Brooks experience, I really didn't give much credibility to the notion that the Rams would hire another coach straight out of the NCAA. I assumed that the Rams would hire an offensive specialist as a head coach because the vast majority of their talented athletes still under contract are on the offense - while I understand the critical need to rebuild a defense, you can't let the only thing really working for you atrophy while you're in that rebuilding process. And with a young HC like Linehan, he's liable to be apt to let the football op's folks go out and find a DC on their own and not rely on him to bring one in.

Linehan was good in Miami and good in Minny.

The bigger consequence of this move is that Daunte Culpepper probably won't be going to Miami. They were just rumors, but pretty strong rumors that the Dolphins would try to land Culpepper because of his ties to Linehan in Minnesota.

Stay tuned...
