Titans bar McNair from working out at Baptist Sports Park

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

Just like he?s done countless times throughout his NFL career, Steve McNair showed up for work yesterday at Baptist Sports Park.

Only this time, something was different: McNair was told he wasn?t welcome.

The 11-year relationship between the Titans and their quarterback took an unexpected turn yesterday when the team informed McNair it didn?t want him working out at Baptist Sports Park.

It?s a sign McNair?s days with the team are probably numbered.

?A month ago they say he needs to be there to get familiar with the young guys, and now they tell him to get out??? agent Bus Cook said last night.

?I have never seen anything like that in my life. They can sugarcoat it any way they want to, but when you throw your starting quarterback off the property, an MVP, Pro Bowl guy who led them to the Super Bowl and one of the greatest players in the history of the team. To just to throw him out? After this, I don?t think Steve would want to go back any more."

Titans Coach Jeff Fisher declined comment when reached last night. Titans General Manager Floyd Reese, who remained here to visit with USC quarterback Matt Leinart, did not return several messages left by The Tennessean.

With his contract situation unsettled, indications are the Titans are concerned about McNair getting injured. If that happens, they?d be liable for the $9 million in base salary he?s scheduled to make in 2006.

I do not understand this move at all. McNair and his agent Bus Cook had been less than encouraged by the talks but they knew that the cap number was going have be to be reduced. Cook also represents Brett "Cut Me I Dare Ya" Farve for those of you scoring at home. One of the Titans biggest issues was offensive continuity and communication with the QB and young wide reciever corps....I dunno bout this move by management.

Too bad this isn't some kind of April Fools joke. As a Titans fan this SUCKS!

But looking past my bias they should've traded him rather than disrespecting him like this. Any veteran player who has done as much as McNair has for his team doesn't deserve that.

But that's the NFL for ya. Maybe the Titans will get Leinart and Norm Chow will get him into NFL shape quick. I'd personally like to see the Titans pick up Jay Cutler.

There has been speculation about McNair being released throughout the offseason. In fact, there are more than a few analysts who have suggested that the only reason the Ravens haven't signed Kerry Collins is because they were waiting for the Titans to release McNair.

Thats pretty weak. Really, Steve McNair and Eddie George are and will be forever the face of that entire Oilers/Titans organization IMO. The Titans already kicked Eddie to the curb, and now it looks like thats exactly waht theyre gonna do with McNair. That shows very little class on the part of the Titans organization. You just dont do that to a player that makes up that much of your teams history, even if it is just a business.

Eddie George was offered very similar money to stay in Tennessee instead of going to Dallas. He chose Dallas because he thought he had a better chance to start there.

Eddie was delusional about his own abilities at that point in his career. He didn't have the legs left to start anywhere in the league.

He couldn't face the music and realize that he wasn't a starter and that Chris Brown was going to take the first snap on opening day.

Hindsight is 20/20, but Eddie should've sucked it up and stayed in Tennessee. I think even he would say that now. Fisher would've given him an opportunity to compete for a starting spot (which he wouldn't have won), and he certainly wouldn't have deactivated him by the end of the season like Parcells did.

The Titans didn't screw Eddie over. They offered him a fair market deal to retire in Tennessee.

That's life in the NFL. The Titans should have either released him or cut him loose already if they are moving on.

Exactly. Dont string the guy along. They should have been more like the Army when they give the Honorable Discharge. Hey, it was great having you. You did a lot for us and you did us very well son, but get the hell outta here.

McNair's agent knew of the decision to not allow him to work out at the team facility until his contract was worked out and didn't tell him.

I don't agree with the decision in the first place, but I think Bus Cook is playing the media card ala Drew Rosenhaus. There's not much innocence to be found here no matter where you turn.
