dfwabel
The following was taken from a US Army press release in 1999. It should still stand today in policy.Since the 1988 Army-Navy Classic, Army?s football team has been representing the total force by wearing the unit patches of the Army?s divisions and other selected units.Army players will wear unit patches on the right shoulders of his jerseys, which are modeled on jerseys from the years immediately after World War II. A new way of assigning patches to players ensures that every unit being represented will be on the field during the game, according to equipment manager Dick Hall, who started his thirtieth year with the academy Wednesday. The fullbacks, for example, will represent the Big Red One in this year?s game, so every time a fullback is on the field, the 1st Infantry Division will be represented."We have consciously tried to identify, over the years, increasingly with the field Army," said U.S. Military Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Daniel W. Christman. "When the Army tunes in to watch its team, they?ll see the 2nd Infantry Division patch, they?ll see the 1st Cav patch, they?ll see the Big Red One patch." The patches come from the units, Hall explained, and equipment seamstress Jeannine Nunnally sews them onto the Army-Navy game jerseys. "We feel it?s important," Hall said. "It?s nice to have us playing for the Army and the Army backing us."Players in the upper three classes are assigned a unit patch before the season starts. Each August, the players representing a particular unit have their picture taken with coach Bob Sutton. The units receive the pictures of "their" players. The players also often receive unit coins, letters, videos and unit histories from "their" units, Hall added. ?They can key in on the player," Hall said. "They know who they are looking for."And since freshman players are assigned patches later in the season, the units might also get a surprise of an extra representative.
