Gothamite
I'm wondering if anybody can help me track down the variations in the Yankees' primary logo. The original logo had shading under the brim, as seen in this ticket and 1978 photo:So when did they unveil the modern version of the logo? It looks like it might have been part of the grand Yankee Stadium II plan:which would make that flag in back of Billy somewhat outdated, which is certainly plausible. But does anybody know, off the top of your head? The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.
jkrdevil
I've seen the shaded logo in some pics and videos from the 80's it seems they were both in existence at one point at the same time and the shaded one ended up being phased out.
goforbroke
Looks like the shaded version goes back at least to 1952 http://sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=1260From the same year, not sure how official this patch is http://sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=61627dj7hlbhqhvutezlbut it looks like a lot of elements of that logo weren't really set in stone (background color yellow? bat going in different direction?)To summarize, I have no answer except to agree with jkrdevil. BBTV
Could it be that there just were no official specs for the logo until recently, and whoever was reproducing it just shaded it if they felt like it? I once had a car but I crashed it. I once had a guitar but I smashed it. I once, wait where am I going with this?

Gothamite
Yeah, I think that they were moving things around to accomodate the text in that patch - never seen that orientation anywhere else, and they had been using the logo consistently for at least a decade before that. And I think Dawg's undoubtedly right that the yellow is to represent the Golden anniversary.I've seen the shaded logo in some pics and videos from the 80's it seems they were both in existence at one point at the same time and the shaded one ended up being phased out.Could it be that there just were no official specs for the logo until recently, and whoever was reproducing it just shaded it if they felt like it?Could be, but I don't think so. The logo seems to be pretty consistently shaded until the 1970s. And after that, with the exception of some carryover (such as the flag Billy and George are standing in front of, if the Times is correct and that press conference is actually from 1978 and not his hiring in 1975 or some other occassion), the team has consistently used the modern version. Gothamite
Working up a version:I based it on the cover of a 1940s program - thinner red outlines, different stars, darker colors and shading under the brim. Not quite there, but I'll keep working on it. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog.
