AAA baseball returning to Tucson

The Toros are back as part of the GBL, however they will take the 2011 season off as to not conflict with the new AAA team and supposedly will return to the GBL in 2012.

That is, if the GBL is still around then. Being a (former) St. George fan, I've kept my eye on some of the things going on this last year--apparently Yuma and Orange County could be folding or moving, Chico (despite winning the league championship) could be in trouble, St. George looks dead for good, and Maui (whose owners originally owned St. George), being all the way out on those islands, doesn't seem poised to make a return next year. Apparently, the league has hemorrhaged money in 2010, despite what they may say, due to low actual, not announced, attendance this year.

Along with that, just about everyone greatly exaggerated attendance numbers--even Chico, which was/is (if you ask me) the flagship team for the league, has been reported to have had inflated attendance numbers--announcing something like 1500 when only about 250 show up--from viewers' accounts.

The only exceptions was St. George (in the sense that they didn't announce 1200 when only about 150 showed up), and then the new owners simply ran out of money, the league took over the RoadRunners and canceled the remaining home games. It is my theory that St. George didn't finish out their home schedule (once taken over by the league) because they wouldn't announce 1200 when only 200 showed up (if that), giving a bad image for the league.

Only the Canadian teams (Victoria, Calgary, and Edmonton) seem stable for now, though there are some rumblings that Edmonton is on thin ice. One of the leagues founders (and CEO) has left for a job with the San Jose Earthquakes.

I can't say for sure (and don't bank on it), but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if the GBL went under after next year.

There are four poorly-run teams in the Northern League who would love to take those GBL teams under their wings.

Mind you, they turned down the Frontier League, so they're probably dead in the water, except Rockford, who'll just go back like nothing ever happened.

I understand your Padres/Diablos dichotomy here...

Well, there's that and the fact that the modern City of Escondido occupies land which was originally part of the Rancho Rincon del Diablo ("The Devil's Corner") granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1843.

the flow of the name is just wrong.

You see... I find that it flows rather nicely.

Amazing. I used to go to GBL games when the Silver Sox played in Reno and this is the first I've even heard of a team in Chico. They used to have a team called the Chico Heat, but that was YEARS ago.

But where I, and I assume many others, falter with it is the "didodi" part of the name. The mouth is going from that long e-long o-long e portion rather quickly, whereas with a "didoda" long e-long o-short a sequence, you have a bit of a breather before the next long e finishes it all off.

You know we've (I've) hit new lows when discussing the flow of a heretofore non-existent team's proposed nickname.

Well, at least to some accounts, even Victoria in the GBL could be gone (even if it is just another forum). I wouldn't put my hopes on the GBL Toros to come back; better hope that that Escondido doesn't get that stadium, Tucson.

Baseball in Tucson is extremely unstable and I agree...unless this AAA team ends up staying longer than the one year and doesn't move to Esco, any form of baseball in Tucson in 2012 is probably not going to happen. I cannot see the GBL Toros returning from hiatus.
