  1. Yep, that Pitt/GB SB was a slight disaster in terms of the field, IMO.

Like someone else said, the logos, the endzone colors, the endzone scripts, all looked wet and washed out by the middle of the second quarter. Ugghhh. Lazy. Looked as if they were still dropping paint down on the field on game day.

Just as bad was the Seattle/Denver SB.

i believe some of the "washed out" look was because the turf was brand new as the stadium did not want to damage the parts of the field that had the Dallas Star and the cowboys endzone.

  2. Yep. Everything about hosting that Super Bowl was lazy. The Stadium rolled out the "replacement" parts of their field turf, so not to paint over the star and the endzones (AT&T field has all the logos sewn into the field.) So if you look closely the endzones, the area around the SB logo, and the center of the field where all a slightly darker shade of green!

  3. Anybody else have the field diagrams replaced by an ad for photobucket or did something slip by my antivirus.

Sometimes pittpack will remove previous versions of a field after he made changes. Look back in the thread's history; you'll see a lot of Photobucket error messages.

As poplular as this thread is he might of hit his bandwidth!

  4. Yea, Starting with SB XLV in Dallas. That is when the NFL went "Corporate" with the SB logos, and completed the transistion to the updated AFC and NFC logos. Now those logos are upgrades as the orginal versions where clunky and dated. BUT....The SB logos are just...boring now. I would love to have the stadium and geographic area logo on the field instead of just the Vince Lombardi Trophy and the generic logo emplacement. Very booring!

  5. I think it had more to do with keeping the script look like it is supposed to be without getting stretched or shrunk.

If you look at the Broncos wordmark from Super Bowl's XXXII and XXXIII you can see how they stretched the lettering vertically to make it big.

The actually Broncos wordmark is actually short.

The Seahawks and Cardinals wordmark is similar, so instead of distorting it, they added the full wordmark that included city name to keep the proportions correct.

    http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/view/4609/Arizona_Cardinals/2005/Wordmark_Logo

I can see that. The current Atlanta script is also very similar. So it also would have been about the same as well. Everything about the endzones for this game where very proportional!

  6. The Cardinals wordmark was the second and last to have the city/state included.

I think it was just easier for team because their team wordmark was "Arizona Cardinals", I think they just use "Cardinals" nowadays.

Hard to remember. I know there was quie a stir on the board back then, Mostly on the way the Cardinals wordmark would be painted. IMHO it looked better the the full State and team name for this instance. And if I understood it. If Atlanta had made the Super Bowl that year. It would have been just like the Cardinals one, but City and team name.

  7. Though I live in Phoenix, I was just happy with a great game. And the last 10 miuntes was some of the greatest in recient SB history. First AZ getting that long drive and scoring the TD. i thought my neighborhood was going to explode, Then with Pitt answering on a "classic" drive of their own. And AZ nearly coming back. They where around the 40 YD LN If I remember. and had a couple of shots. Cant really fault anyone. Just a very good game, with an NFL classic finish!

  8. This field had so much memories, as this was at UofP stadium and was the first SB field I actually saw with my own eyes (from its spot outside the stadium.) Ironicly the actual grass part of the field was donated to Moon Valley High School in Phoenix, AZ. And is still one of the best HS fields in the state (outside of the Field turf fields) to this date.

I'm assuming the Patriots changed to this wordmark from the one used in their previous Super Bowl appearances because of their logo being in the endzone instead of a helmet or AFC/NFL logo. Also I'm going to assume the red outline was removed from the Giants wordmark for a similar reason, and I can't remember if the workmark used at Giants stadium also went without the red outline, but I think it was just the white wordmark and nothing else painted in the endzone.

Correct, The Giants endzone for this SB and the one in Indy went with the white lettering as the "NY" logo had the red outline. I would assume the same for the Patriots as well as the "Flying Elvis" logo was prominent in both the endzone and the Team box!

  10. Yea, I was watching that on the giant jumbotron the Host Committie set up for the voluntiers at the NFL Experence. And a lot of people went nuts with the "Helmet Catch!" One other thing was the Fox end of Quarter intros and outros. They were for the FOX program "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and everyone was cheeering for the Terminator over "Cleetus" The Fox Robot! I really wanted the Terminator to kick that Foxbot's butt! "Hasta La Vista...Cleetus!" ;-)

I was really bitter because the 2007 Dallas Cowboys were probably the best Cowboys roster in my time that I can remember (not counting the 3 Super Bowl titles because I was still growing up at that time), and to lose to Eli Manning, with Romo throwing the ball blindly into triple coverage and Patrick Crayton dropping that sure pass when he was wide open. That was a tough loss to swallow; equally as bad as that 44-6 peppering at the hands of Philly a year later...from 2006 to 2010 was a hard, rough period for me.

Then, for the Giants to get lucky two more times...made me extremely pissed off and voila...Eli Manning gets put on the pedestal as my most hated player ever in the NFL. As such, I become giddy as a schoolboy whenever I see him play horribly, because karma is a b-tch.

Well Eli is really getting the Karma now. The Giants suck, Eli is sucking worse, and their is a "giant" sized black hole sucking all the light and life in the NY area! If a badly injured Cardnial team, and an out of control Lions team put the "Spanking" on the Giants, then its really getting worse there!

  12. Super Bowl XL: February 5, 2006 - Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan

    Seattle Seahawks - 10 Pittsburgh Steelers - 21

    40_zps8db16fc9.png

This was the first Super Bowl to be played on field turf.

This Super Bowl is what got me really interested in the Super Bowl fields, since this was the first Super Bowl I had seen with the Steelers. In the years after I would always be excited to see what the new Super Bowl logo would be, and imagine what the field would look like, and even draw up what I though the field would be. This is one of my favorite fields (with a lot of bias), but I always loved the enzone design around the conference logos.

< Super Bowl XXXIX First Post Super Bowl XLI >

Yea the field had a lot of synergy. The SB logo was a great homage to the host city. Though the game was full of contorversy. I dont think was the refs so much as the "ghost" of Jimmy Hoffa. I think his body was buried under the old JL Hudson's department store wharehouse that Ford Field was partialy constructed from! ;-)

  13. Agreed, having umpired on both surfaces. Astroturf is one hard as a rock surface. Field turf is a superior product. For the Astroturf, I would leve the fields as they are solid colors, no texture, But field turf would be 1/2 the texture of a grass field. Trust the guy who trows the flags! ;-)

I was thinking the same for the Field Turf being 1/2 the texture of grass, plus it will look different from grass with the darker color. After watching the Steelers @ Ravens last night and looking over some good pictures of the field I have from when I played at M&T Bank stadium, that seems to be the best way to go. As for the Astro Turf, I was debating on keeping them as is, but as you can see form this picture of SB XXXI, the color isn't completely consistent across the entire field, there are just very small changes throughout.

And you can see why Astro Turf was so awful to play on by looking at the horrendous turf burn on Todd Rucci's (#71) elbow. Those things last for weeks.

    121510_XXXI.jpg

Yea. It was essentialy a very rough rug on hard, un-yelding cement. So it gave very bad rug burns. And depending on the solvents and cleaning products to clean that "rug" it would mke other ares on the field looing slightly discolored!

  14. Hard to believe that California will go from 2003 to 2016 without hosting a Super Bowl. Well I guess it isn't too hard given the paucity of modern stadia and the lack of a team in LA. Florida as well will go from 2010 until at least 2019. That's a far cry for those who grew up on what was basically a LA/Pasadena, Miami, New Orleans rotation.

Well with the new SF stadium (Levi's Stadium) It looks like all the newer stadiums are in the mix. (Phoenix/ Glendale, SF area, Houston, Jerry World/Dallas, Ford Field in Detroit, Superdome/ New Orleans, Indy, and now the new Vikings field), If that is the case older stadiums like San Diego, Miami, and Tampa, might get left out....Unless major renovations are made. Even in Phoenix, they are begining some renovations to keep the stadium up to "Super Bowl" standards! (i.e. Better management in the Glendale area so other games can be hosted in the future!)

  15. Texture looks great for the grass fields. The fieldturf and astroturfed fields will be a bit different!

Yeah, I'm not sure how I will do those yet. I think Field Turf is more similar to grass, except it has the small rubber pellets. As for AstroTurf, it's more like carpet on concrete (I've played on it before and its not fun), so there are bit less variation in the shades.

  16. I've been trying out some methods to give texture to the fields in paint, and this is where I'm at right now. I will do final color correction as well once I get the textures in. I just wanted some feedback to see if this looks good enough to start implementing once I finish up all the fields.

  17. Real Quick question, as you get closer to the Super Bowl games that have decorations for the team boxes. Are you planing to add those to the fields, or leave them off? If that is the case I have the duplicate profile, and I can add them after the fact, so it will not disrupt your computer program.

I've been thinking about it but I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. The first Super Bowl that I've seen to have the team box painted was XXXI, but for much of the Super Bowls it has been really hard to see whats actually there. So that might be something I add later on once I have a good enough idea of how they were all painted (mostly the older Super Bowls).

I understand. Some of the team boxed where complicated, and some very plain. This past years Super Bowl in NY/NJ had no decoration at all. And some like SB XXXVII and beyond where really intricate.

  18. I am also working on the exact dimensions for the field tray (yes it is an elevated, mobile tray they use here in Phoenix) at University of Phoenix Stadium (AZ Cardnials and the Site of Super Bowl XLIX).So that will assist the board in creating the SB field for this season.
