I'm guessing that the 75th red retros will be the alternates this year and are being worn in preseason so that the new home and away uniforms can be rolled out right before the regular season begins.

Well they've got 12 days to do that if that is the case and CSEC hasn't really been the type to surprise jersey launch. If anything, they're the opposite.

  2. Yeah, I'm kind of whelmed by the Angels set. I'll have to see the full release, the explanation for everything and the merch, but I'm feeling just kind of "Oh, alright" about it right now. They at least look like a good/normal baseball jersey though.

I think it's a real wild move for this jersey to be the first one they put "Los Angeles Angels" on if that is what the sleeve patch appears to have. Also will have to wait for the explanation, but this doesn't really look like a "Los Angeles" based jersey.

  3. FWIW, the Stamps are wearing the 75th anniversary jerseys in the preseason game today.

From those jerseys making an appearance again, that lady at the locker room sale saying the black jerseys wouldn't be back, the (2012-2020, 2021-?) home and black alternates being 50% off for months now and no black in social media graphics, it really would lead you to believe that the Stamps are changing something... but nothing has been shown.

They do appear to have gone back to the "regular" helmets again with the (Yankees/old Tigers-esque different logo) horse on both sides and removed the striping.

Looks like a return to the old Edmonton Football Team classic "logo inside jersey striping" striping.

I don't think I like the idea of no green stripes on the white jersey and I also don't like this apparent elk head erasure. While the antler helmet decals didn't work, having the Double-E on the helmet and, what looks to be, the jerseys, it'll make the elk logo kind of a primary logo in name alone.

Alternatively is there any Alberta city of remotely suitable size that doesn't have a WHL team?

    Nope.

Assuming a WHL team would kill an AHL team at the box office.

That's always been the assumption, but there hasn't been any sample size (at least in the modern era) of having both teams in the same city at the same time.

It is happening in Winnipeg right now, but that situation isn't the same with the Moose being Winnipeg's only hockey team for 25 years and the Ice only being in Winnipeg for three seasons (two of which were pandemic impacted) and not having their arena yet.

My guess is somewhere in the Canadian Prairies, say Regina; that way they could slot into the Central Division and immediately have a rival in the Moose.

The article says "Calgary area" and you go with Regina? I guess it is more "Calgary area" than Stockton is.

Boise, Billings, Lethbridge, Regina, Saskatoon sound reasonable, however does the Flames want to put an AHL club in a market already housed by a WHL club? I know the Hitmen have a decent following in Calgary already though.

The article says in Canada and in the Calgary area, so only really Lethbridge of yours would fit that bill. But yes, the issue would be the existing Junior teams/the amount of hockey already being played plus the size of the cities and arenas.

I don't know if "Calgary area" actually means in Calgary, but Calgary doesn't really have another big enough existing arena. There's the Saddledome, but I don't know if they would want to add a fourth team to the Dome master schedule. There's the First Nation arena that the Hitmen played the pandemic 2020-21 season at and a couple games this previous season when the Flames and Roughnecks had covid reschedules, but that only holds 2000 people. There's the bowl arena at the Olympic Park complex, but that's only like 2500-3000 capacity and international ice.

The Calgary bedroom cities/towns of Airdrie, Cochrane and Okotoks do not have a big enough arena (Okotoks has an Junior A team, still not a big enough arena).  Then the other players of Lethbridge and Medicine Hat have the WHL teams. (I also don't really know the AHL circuit that well, but would Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Regina, et al (minus Saskatoon) be big enough cities and big enough arenas  in comparison?)

If the rumors from that article are correct and it is in Canada and in the Calgary area, I don't know where that could be.

I can’t understand why Calgary changed. The red was so much better.

When the change was revealed, Ryan Popowich of CSEC (the marketing person who has been the face of the Flames jersey news in recent years) said, in not so many words on Twitter, that the red jerseys didn't look good against the new WestJet teal turf.  I don't doubt that it didn't look great, but I don't know if I like the colour of a sponsored turf being the reason for the jerseys to change. I also don't know if that was the only reason, but it appeared to have been a reason.

There's also the Air Canada conspiracy that I saw like one person make on Twitter when this change happened.

  7. I agree with the sentiment that the Als helmet is going to stick out against the rest of the uniform.

I don't like those Winnipeg jersey at all.

Maybe for next season’s thread, but I’m in line at the Stampeders locker room sale and a lady came outside and told the front of the line that the black jerseys might be a good buy because they aren’t coming back next year.

I posted this back in December and I haven't heard anything since so I don't know if a change is/was expected. However, all their social media graphics for the last while have been pretty sans-black and the red/black home and the black alternate jerseys are 50% off and have been for a while,

It seems kind of pretty late in the game if a change were to happen with training camps starting in two weeks, especially considering the other changes for this upcoming season, but we'll see I guess.

The only solace I can take is that within a year or two they'll be background noise, so to speak, for most viewers, like all ads and commercials are; but that takes us to the Slippery Slope, doesn't it? They'll need to put them in even more obtrusive places to make up for the ones we ignore now.

Well that's it really. I don't ever take notice of the CFL jersey ads, they're just "there".

I don't know about the slippery slope though.

Yeah. The frustrating this is this: San Francisco HAS a color. I'm having a hard time thinking of any city that identifies with a single color better than SF does with International Orange, the color of the Golden Gate Bridge.  AND THEY DIDN'T USE IT.

I'm wondering if they questioned what the point of using (what could be viewed as) a slightly different orange would be. It's not like the Giants normal colours are navy and red where the International Orange would be a marked and intentional departure, it would just be kind of different where it may have just looked like a misprinted/miscoloured jersey.

They may have just figured the Giants are famously already orange and figured it was good enough to bridge (ha!) the gap and get the point across.

  10. Take this for what it's worth (because it's the Twitter account of a subreddit).

The account adds saying it's cream (though the picture there seems pretty white) and says "Angels" on the front. It then responds to another tweet saying it's "Not official but very very very likely legitimate", so yeah...

The rumor going around last season was that it was beach themed, so that might track at least.

  11. Maybe a strong take, but I think the best Hurricanes jersey they've ever had is their current home. The originals are okay, but I could never get past the mismatching hem, arm and sock striping. The EDGE's and the Team Canada Hurricanes were obviously bad and "CANES" stinks.

Heck, I don't think their entire identity is all that great. Looking at Miami, Tulsa, Lethbridge and Carolina, is a hurricane too abstract of a thing for a good logo/brand? Miami has no hurricane imagery, Tulsa uses the warning flags (but that's buoyed by the college script), Lethbridge has gone to the hurricane and non-hurricane (including Taz the Tasmanian Devil and the Washington HurrJcanes) well a couple different times to varying "success" (seriously, if you haven't looked at Lethbridge's logo history, check it out) and Carolina often gets the toilet bowl comparison while only looking kind of like a hurricane.

  12. Not College Hockey but University Hockey, as I watch the championship game today, my alma mater Alberta Golden Bears probably hold the record for most usage of a single logo on a single uniform set and I can't recall if I've ever posted it on the boards yet.

There's eight, count 'em, eight GUBA's (the name of the mascot/logo).

    _big_2020_01_17goldenbearshockey_2_49403

The green jersey and the gold jersey are slightly better as neither use GUBA as the front crest and the golds also don't use it as the shoulder patch, but they're still rocking seven and six GUBA's respectively.

  13. Just kind of a neat thing I noticed on tonight's Ducks broadcast. Peep the water bottle labels.

    41DVGmP.png

Appears to be Getzlaf's water bottle. The linesman used Fowler's water bottle to fix some ice a bit later and that bottle has current branding labels. Kind of odd it's Getzlaf when he was always one rumored, and maybe said as much I can't recall, to not like the Mighty Ducks (unless that's the joke where they gave him a Mighty Ducks one to mess with him).

When I was a kid I thought it was hilarious how they used the literal team's logo for their captain's C.

    GettyImages-53124354-e1589433937190-1024

They should've never stopped. It's a quality bit.

I originally thought the logo as the captain's C was something the started with and then abandoned because they thought it was too much. But looking through the Flames captaincy history, here's a picture from the first season of the pedestals in 94-95, because Nieuwendyk is the captain, and then from the last season of the pedestals in 99-00 with Steve Smith as the captain.

    image-4.png?resize=708,432&ssl=1

    oct-1999-steve-smith-of-the-calgary-flam

Then here are pictures of Fleury in 94-95 and then either 97-98 or 98-99.

    image_8316a517-9249-4982-951d-a029310d70

So the pedestals started out with neither the flaming-C or the Atlanta A for the captain letters, then had both, then dropped the flaming-C (I assume because they thought it was too much).
