  1. Well expanding to two markets that are four hours apart within a five-year span probably wasn't the greatest of ideas to begin with. We've been over the Rays' location issues many times. They would do so much better with attendance by being in Tampa than the St. Petersburg outpost. They also need a more fan-inspiring building. They've tried their best to spruce up that place (and it's really not as bad a place to watch a game as folks make it out to be...it's just so totally different a baseball-watching experience than we're used to. They do need a building with a roof, but they also need some natural sunlight and color/brightness. As for the Marlin, they didn't help their initial cause by playing an hour away from Miami (traffic really stinks in South Florida). They really didn't help their cause by playing in a football stadium for 20 years. Then having fire sales after their World Series runs, than the fire sale halfway through their first season in an actual baseball stadium, and having Loria annually piss off their fans has probably chased off their fans. They need an owner that'll show short- and long-term commitments to being and staying competitive. They could use a face like Jeter being part of their ownership group. He would excite that fan base. I don't get why folks see Montreal as this answer. Blame whomever you want, but that fan base quit on baseball. They would show up for Opening Day and the series against Toronto, and when you only have two games a season...sure, sell out a Spring Training game....but they don't care about baseball 81 times a year.
  2. I do miss those Hillary mic-drop yells from you....
  3. A friend of mine had moved to Houston for a couple years before coming back to Atlanta, and she said there was absolutely no hockey vibe in Houston, both around town and at the games.
  4. You have current and now-former employees of ESPN that say otherwise.
  5. First step by ESPN in admitting they've been leaning left the last few years? Should you not remember, Bocephus was drop-kicked by ESPN for comparing Obama to Hitler.
  6. Coyotes will need a home in Arizona beyond 2017-18 to get considered for the marquee NHL regular season event. The NHL knows enough in PR to not put a big event in a place where a team may not be there the following season.
  7. It's basically a television version of sports talk radio.
  8. A show that's been on Sunday mornings on ESPN for nearly 30 years has come to a close today. Thanks for a very informative and cordial sports discussion, "The Sports Reporters" It's being replaced with E:60, whatever that is. It has Bob Ley, so it's probably a snoozer.
  9. Predators revenge for all that poor-mouthing @the admiral has given them over the years.
  10. For those that still hold out hope the NHL will get back with ESPN....forget about that. Whatever hockey department ESPN had (Burnside, LeBrun, Buccigross, Joe McDonald) has gotten the axe today.
  11. The only thing I remember about the Nagano Games was the US team trashing their rooms after a poor showing in the Olympics.
  12. Like I was going to bite my tongue for west-coast viewers. These next three Olympiads are going to test my DVR space.
  13. May as well complete this love triangle by moving the Coyotes to Atlanta!
  14. Los Angeles saw their longtime baseball announcer retire last October, and thankfully under his terms. Today, their longtime hockey announcer announced that he will be retiring at the end of this season. Bob Miller, who non-broadcasting fans may associate more with his work in the Mighty Ducks movie than the Kings games, has had some health issues in recent times, with this season being so tough that he's missed a lot of games (I believe he had dialed back some of the road games to begin with). He's going to call the Kings' final two regular season games...the home game with Chicago, then the season finale the next day across town in Anaheim.
  15. The NHL and NBA, and in small part MLB too, really should get smarter when it comes to scheduling games, especially when it's inside the conference/league. There were a few seasons where the Thrashers made five or six separate trips to New York City to play the Devils, Rangers, and Islanders. I would think everyone benefits more if the sheer number of road trips were lessened and longer in length instead of singular home/road games. I wouldn't quite go as far as what Alaska did, but that's more out of necessity. A bit shocked that Alaska lased as long as they did. Life isn't easy when you're as much of an outpost as the Aces are, for them or the opponents. When they played the Gwinnett Gladiators in the Kelly Cup finals, the Gladiators didn't have their own chartered team plane. There weren't any flights where they could get their entire team personnel on one flight, so they were scrambling to fill up the couple-ish seats on any flights heading to Anchorage, whether they left from Atlanta or Birmingham or Nashville, etc. There was some uncertainty that the whole team would make it there in time for Game 1.
  16. Yeah, don't think there's 2000+ employees involved, but between the full-time and seasonal employees, that figure is possibly north of 1000. The number of employees we had with the Thrashers was over 1200.
  17. You'd have to think there's either some health issue with Musburger (or his immediate family) or ESPN is just fully pushing him out the door. One of the biggest names is sports broadcasting history was basically relegated to the SEC Network and the conference's 3rd-best game of the week (at best) the last couple years, and then basically abruptly quitting. There's got to be more to this than what's being presented.
  18. A large percentage of fans probably wouldn't have a clue who the names are on the older trophies in any sports league
  19. The WAC is still a thing? Sheesh. That conference just won't die.
  20. Dunno if ESPN is in the position to be out-bidding others right now....
  21. To me, the only answer that'll do away with that dog-humping overtime is to adopt the soccer-style 3-1-0 points system (and just scrap overtime during the regular season). Instead of ties equating to half-wins, making them equal to 1/3rd of a win will open up the pace. Hell, we could see scenarios during the season where, in a tie game late in regulation, a team will risk the one point to get three by pulling the goalie. We've gone from "no overtimes, accept the tie" to "overtimes but still have ties" to the brief period of "regulation ties" to "4-on-4, no ties, shootout" to now "3-on-3, no ties, shootout". Explaining that to a prospective hockey fan is going to scare them off.
  22. Because he's making the owners a lot of money and, in their eyes, is doing a good job. When he's no longer making the owners a lot of money and isn't doing a good job.
  23. When the Seahawks and Cardinals played to a 6-6 draw, that became the third time in NFL history that there's been a 6-6 tie game. The Cardinals have been involved in all three of said games....
