You’re moving the goal posts and/or arguing in bad faith.

In the end, you're vastly overthinking it.  The old stadium is in the logo.  Some social media person stitched together a photo of the two stadiums to show that the old one's look and meaning were emulated in the building of the new one.  They basically wanted to build a new one across the street (with many more money-making amenities).

Also they played 74-75 at Shea.

Dangit.  This is what I get for deciding to just go with it instead of making sure.  I always forget, but was sure I remembered it correctly.  At least it doesn't get me in trouble as much as that I keep forgetting if my home address is 137 or 147.

  3. 1. It's 100 years since Yankee Stadium I opened.

    2. It's 100 years that they've called 151st and River their "home".

    3. It's 100 years that they've played in a ballpark named "Yankee Stadium".

Like I said, as far as I've seen words from official sources never seem to phrase it in a way that explicitly say their current building is 100 years old.  The celebration is of the anniversary of their move into their own ballpark and their standing on their legs as a franchise.

  4. They never in anything I've ever seen explicitly state they're trying to pretend they're the same park.  But it was a very, very, very important year in the history of the club.  So, they celebrated it.  They did everything they could in building the new house to homage the old one, including the same name and address.  The post shows off the emulation, but they never actually say it's 100 years of their current facility.  One could say they're being weasel-y in their wording, but I've not seen anything phrased in a way that is not at least technically correct, the best kind of correct.

Always strange that Bonanza, which is seen as this ultimate old  western show, was filmed and based around a ranch on the California/Nevada border which sits at the bottom of a ski resort hill.

I don't believe it.  Next you're going to suggest Korea doesn't look like hills of scrub brush on Century Ranch.

Well... it's not a griffin. A griffin is a combination of specifically an eagle and a lion, the kings of birds and animals, respectively. The Peagle logo the Rangers are using is combination of a panther and an eagle, so they're halfway to a griffin, but not all the way.

Well... a "panther" is just the family of big cats that include lions, tigers, jaguars, and leopards.  So there's a 1-in-4 chance it's a gryphon.

So I get why some people might not like the execution here -- the "big blue blob" as it were -- but, in my mind, it adheres to the total aesthetic of the uniform in keeping it exceedingly similar. Throwing a Minnie & Paul on there, even in simplified form, wouldn't have matched that objective.

It's all understandable.  Just craving... something.  The Mississippi and Minnesota rivers in homage to the old logo?  An M and StP?  Just the road cap M?  Some pattern (akin to the bricks in the Brewers' Wisconsin patch) that's culturally relevant to the cities/state?  Something to break up the solid shape.

San Francisco would like a word.

(I also think the choice of grey for Washington is a miss, but everything besides SF and LA seems to either objectively look good or really hit with the locals and catch the culture)

Maybe it's fitting that the old rivals share this link.

I feel bad being so off topic with the Rangers drop, so this is probably my last comment.

I believe that from the start the redesign was billed as retro-inspired, but looking towards the future. I think we can see that with the clear inspirations from the Twins' past while the overall design feels pretty clean and refreshed. And I'll ask you this; was the Minnie and Paul patch that much easier to see from six feet away?

Eh...  It's the MLB thread, so it's all fair game.

I think overall it's more empty than clean.  But I already said when they were released that while I think most of the set is perfect, I think the wordmark should have an outline.  As with everything, it will likely all become the norm with being used to it.

But the only other failing I find is this patch.  It goes past empty to sterile, and as my years-long call that the Cleveland C cap needed an outline, red and navy do not stand out enough against each other.

Looking at pics, I think the old patch reads, but it's also a major part of the identity.  It's a logo used elsewhere in the park and other places.  Whereas I don't understand why they'd just put the shape of the state on the home uniform.  Seems like a City Connect move.  The TC or even the flags would have probably been better, but I imagine they avoided the TC because they would have had to either change the colors or add an outline.  Although the TC is in those colors on the batting helmet, so it would be fine.

  8. The aesthetic I think of when seeing this set:

    tenor.gif?itemid=15027217

It evokes to me the aesthetic of westerns from the 60s-90s, the tones and fonts of old tattered maps in the Old West.  I like the aesthetic.  I like the theme they went with a lot and all the individual pieces.  The pants do seem odd.  I think it would be better in all cream and wonder if it's just a move to differentiate themselves from other teams with similar standard color schemes (Giants home, Twins alt, Padres/Orioles/White Sox if you open your parameters).

As @SCL said, Minnie and Paul are too detailed/complex for this rendition of the Twins' uniforms. They still have them above center field, so it's not like they're completely gone.

The "small dot" is representing the North Star, as in North Star State, as well as the location of the team within the state.

Then that sounds like the rendition is lacking.  I looked at it and the discussion and was like "Yeah, they're going for a more retro look, so things are going to be less detailed", but Minnie and Paul are retro.  It's more a clipart approach to modernity.  Compare with the Brewers' Wisconsin patch that has some kind of detail.  While a lot of his criticism is over-the-top, I can't say I disagree with the "blue blob" terminology.  Yes, it's shaped like Minnesota.  Yes, the red dot is a tiny star.  Doesn't mean those descriptors aren't what anyone sees from more than six inches/six feet away.

Why do you say that? The socks are black and red, the same colors as this set, and the Braves socks that leaked at the same time as all the other teams were consistent with the Braves design.

Don't mind me.  I didn't look back, and remembered it using the TX Texas logo that they've cleared out of their identity this year.  Sounds like I was mistaken.  It's early and it's been a while.  😂

I can see where they're going.  Although it feels more San Antonio than Metroplex.

But I think we can officially say (after the find of the Mariners cap in the colors of those Orioles socks seemed to strongly suggest it) that the sock leak was nothing to do with City Connect.

  12. Do people really not think that sleeve patch objectively sucks?  I thought when this set was released everyone agreed on that.  Just a solid dark shape of the state with a small dot in it?  When the Minnie and Paul logo was already Minnesota-shaped, making the difference look even more lacking?  I'm just surprised by the push back at the suggestion that it's bleh when I thought that was the common consensus.

Looking at it, I get more 70's fast food taco that was still open in the 80's and 90's without rebranding and abandoned and overgrown before the new millenium.

I've gone through the Getty Images for the games to make sure of the details to update the uniform images for Wikipedia.  A few observations and questions.

    • While the talk of flipped patches has been very big on here, the Royals, Twins, Rangers, Cubs, Dodgers, and Giants are not flipping their patches.  In fact, the Giants are wearing their usual sleeve patches on one sleeve and a memorial patch on the other sleeve.  Are these teams not planning on getting sponsors in this season?  Do the swapping teams already have sponsors lined up and are just waiting to finalize the deal, so they already have their uniforms ready?
    • The Nationals, Giants, and Mets haven't yet worn a non-City-Connect alt.  Is this a quirk of the schedule?  The article on changes said that the new rule meant the Mets have dropped their away blue uniform, but don't know if there's been news on any of the other jerseys of these teams (besides the ongoing discussion of the Phillies alts)?  Also haven't seen the Cards' powder blue.
    • The Rangers are back to flipping red and blue with their home whites again, huh?  Any rhyme or reason?  Pitcher's choice?

The article mentions that "Very few players want higher numbers typically associated with NFL offensive tackles, hockey defensemen[,] or back-of-the-roster scrubs." So the obvious solution presents itself: give those undesireable numbers to the manager and the coaching staff. Problem solved.

It's definitely true that the Yankees have retired too damn many numbers.  Therefore the onus to remedy the problem that they themselves caused must be on them, not on all of Major League Baseball by means of an offensive practice that spits in the eye of history.

Groening and Cohen gave us the answer decades ago.

On the Yankees subreddit everyone was talking about their possibilities and someone suggested just doing the road grey with "The Bronx".  I love the Braves one because it's unobtrusive and already a beautiful look.  We saw what trying to hit on local culture did with the Coors Field All-Star uniforms that were clearly just the Atlanta ones with three-letter codes and local flora.

If it's being jammed down our throats, maybe just taking the home pinstripes and replacing the interlocking NY on the chest with BX, wearing them for a series and putting them on mothballs forever isn't the worst thing in the world.

So I am heavily influenced by Klu on this.  But I would settle for both the Reds and the Pirates wearing vests, as I would settle for the Reds wearing the early-1970s style.

Man.  These pics are really a testament to how photography can mess with the colors and warp our perception.  It almost looks like they're wearing uniforms from an alternate universe where the Giants moved to LA and the Dodgers went to SF.

These photos show the problems with modern day vests. They need to be a dedicated cut with the arm holes inset more than a usual shirt, closer to the fit of a basketball jersey but not quite that extreme. The Pirates photo above with the ASG patch just looks like a regular jersey that had its sleeves removed, and therefore looks too bulky with excess fabric.

Which is why the Rockies vests always looked like the Mercury Mets to me.

The Reds are one of a few teams that have two perfect identities and I wouldn't be mad at either.  Either the Big Red Machine set or the pinstriped 90's and 60's vest set.  Either would be beautiful.

Since we only have 6 teams releasing their City Connects this season, we'll have 10 teams needing to release their jerseys in 2024. With Nike wanting to keep releases at least a week apart and done within the first half of the season, I just think it's unrealistic that we get all 10 City Connect jerseys in 2024. That'd require them to change a fundamental part of the City program, which I don't see happening.

This whole program was initially slated to be released over 3 seasons anyway, so I wouldn't be shocked if Nike extends the releases again, with this one being until 2025.

If it was meant to be over three seasons, doesn't that mean they planned for 10 uniforms in a season?  So it wouldn't be too out of left field.

Huh...  So the US has always had overly "cutesy" looks over classic, huh?

I agree with the earlier calls.  The US for its role in the history of the game should have a very traditional look.  The only problem with the simple block linked letters that they should have is that the Dominican has already planted their flag there.  I think something more classic with a star can work well, but then you step on the Astros' toes.

  19. I don't know what it is.  Maybe I just finally got used to the helmet and I've seen so much of Seattle, so I wasn't focused on taking them in.  Somehow I only just now noticed Houston's awful navy pants.  I don't mind the pattern too much elsewhere, but it looks miserable there, just sort of fading away.

That's true. But the Olympics  uses "Great Britain" to refer to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So this is probably the case in this tournament, as well.

I thought the GB moniker was used in some international competitions because in those Ireland competed as one team, like Korea has done numerous times.

I loved the old China mark, but I think the new one fits better.  I think Blackletter should be used for a European nation with a lot of cultural stuff going on at the time such fancy lettering was used.  Germany seems like the immediate choice given the whole Gutenberg thing, but I think whoever said Italy is on the money.  Rennaissance powerhouse.  Has a bland letter that's hard to make a good logo out of (although the red-outlined one was not bad).  Perfect.  Not that the cursive I wouldn't be bad.  I never had a problem understanding Cleveland's old caps and... I doubt they want to try enforcing any ownership of that mark.  But I think the Blackletter is better.

I saw the Canada jerseys in action and thought "They just went with the Toronto Canada Days?  And then I saw the Israel blue jerseys and said "Oh, there they are.  They just did Toronto."

And when at the start it was said the Dutch unis looked familiar, I thought we were all on the same page that they looked like they were stamped on butter cookies.
